    A Comprehensive Analysis of Swarming-based Live Streaming to Leverage Client Heterogeneity

    Due to missing IP multicast support on an Internet scale, over-the-top media streams are delivered with the help of overlays as used by content delivery networks and their peer-to-peer (P2P) extensions. In this context, mesh/pull-based swarming plays an important role either as pure streaming approach or in combination with tree/push mechanisms. However, the impact of realistic client populations with heterogeneous resources is not yet fully understood. In this technical report, we contribute to closing this gap by mathematically analysing the most basic scheduling mechanisms latest deadline first (LDF) and earliest deadline first (EDF) in a continuous time Markov chain framework and combining them into a simple, yet powerful, mixed strategy to leverage inherent differences in client resources. The main contributions are twofold: (1) a mathematical framework for swarming on random graphs is proposed with a focus on LDF and EDF strategies in heterogeneous scenarios; (2) a mixed strategy, named SchedMix, is proposed that leverages peer heterogeneity. The proposed strategy, SchedMix is shown to outperform the other two strategies using different abstractions: a mean-field theoretic analysis of buffer probabilities, simulations of a stochastic model on random graphs, and a full-stack implementation of a P2P streaming system.Comment: Technical report and supplementary material to http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7497234

    The popularity of video sharing over the Internet has increased significantly. High traffic generated by such applications at the source can be better distributed using a peer-to-peer overlay. LiveShift combines both live and on-demand video streaming -- while video is transmitted through the peer-to-peer network in a live fashion, all peers participate in distributed storage. This adds the ability to replay time-shifted streams from other peers in a distributed and scalable manner. This technical report describes an architecture, a mesh-pull protocol, and a set of policies that support the envisioned use case enable. User-focused evaluation results show its effectiveness and limits in terms of quality of experience

Unlike most P2P systems, LiveShift combines both live and on-demand video streaming while video is transmitted through the peer-to-peer network in a live fashion, all peers participate in distributed storage. This adds the ability to replay time-shifted streams from other peers in a distributed and scalable manner. This paper describes an adaptive fully-distributed mesh-pull protocol that supports the envisioned use case and a set of policies that enable efficient usage of resources, discussing interesting trade-offs encountered. User-focused evaluation results, including both channel switching and time shifting behavior, show that the proposed system provides good quality of experience for most users, in terms of infrequent stalling, low playback lag, and a small proportion of skipped blocks in all the scenarios studied, even in presence of churn

    Arendt and political realism: towards a realist account of political judgement

    This article argues that Hannah Arendt’s thought can offer significant insights on political judgement for realism in political theory. We identify a realist position which emphasises the need to account for how humans judge politically, contra moralist tendencies to limit its exercise to rational standards, but which fails to provide a sufficient conception of its structure and potential. Limited appeals to political judgement render the realist defence of the political elusive, and compromise the endeavour to offer a meaningful alternative to the moralist tendency to displace politics. The potential and limitations of realist discussions on judgement are made visible in relation to proto-realists Judith Shklar and Isaiah Berlin. In seeking to enrich the realist conception of the political, the article introduces the displacement critique found in the neglected Arendtian ‘realism’. It also provides the foundations for a distinctly realist account of political judgement which, we argue, requires elaboration along two dimensions: the social coding of political judgement and the political capacities that help judgement build a suitable political sphere

    Phase I and pharmacokinetic study of the novel chemoprotector BNP7787 in combination with cisplatin and attempt to eliminate the hydration schedule

    BNP7787 (disodium 2,2′-dithio-bis-ethane sulphonate; Tavocept™) is a novel agent developed to protect against cisplatin (cis-diammine-dichloroplatinum(II))-associated chronic toxicities. In this study, we determined the recommended dose of BNP7787 when preceding a fixed dose of cisplatin, the pharmacokinetics (PKs) and the possible reduction of saline hydration. Patients with advanced solid tumours received BNP7787 in escalating doses of 4.1–41 g m−2 as a 15-min intravenous (i.v.) infusion followed by cisplatin 75 mg m−2 as a 60-min i.v. infusion together with pre- and postcisplatin saline hydration in a volume of 2200 ml; cycles were repeated every 3 weeks. PK was carried out using BNP7787, cisplatin and the combination. Twenty-five patients were enrolled in stage I of the study to determine the recommended dose of BNP7787. No dose-limiting toxicity was reached. The highest dose level of 41 g m−2 resulted in a low incidence of grade 2 toxicities, being nausea and vomiting, dry mouth or bad taste and i.v. injection site discomfort. Doses of BNP7787 ⩾18.4 g m−2 did not show a drug interaction between BNP7787 and cisplatin. In stage II of the study, patients received a fixed dose of BNP7787 of 18.4 g m−2 preceding cisplatin and were entered in prespecified reduced saline hydration steps. A total of 21 patients in cohorts of six to nine patients received reduced saline hydration of 1600 ml (step A), 1000 ml (step B) and 500 ml (step C). In step C, two out of six evaluable patients experienced grade 1 nephrotoxicity. Cisplatin acute toxicities in all 46 patients were as expected. Only five patients complained of paresthesias grade 1 and six developed slight audiometric changes. Partial tumour response was observed in four patients and stable disease in 15 patients. In conclusion, BNP7787 was tolerated well up to doses of 41 g m−2. The recommended dose of 18.4 g m−2 enabled safe reduction of the saline hydration schedule for cisplatin to 1000 ml. Further studies will assess whether BNP7787 offers protection against platinum-related late side effects
