    Whirling spin order in the quasicrystal approximant Au72_{72}Al14_{14}Tb14_{14}

    Neutron powder diffraction experiment has been performed on the quasicrystal approximant Au72_{72}Al14_{14}Tb14_{14}, a body-center-cubic crystal of icosahedral spin clusters. The long-range antiferromagnetic order was confirmed at the transition temperature TN=10.4T_{\rm N} = 10.4 K. The magnetic structure consists of noncoplanar whirling spins on the icosahedral clusters, arranging antiferroic-manner. A simple icosahedral spin-cluster model with uniaxial anisotropy accounts well the whirling spin order as well as the in-field metamagnetic transition, indicating that the icosahedral symmetry is essential.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Mitigating Cosmic Microwave Background Shadow Degradation of Tensor-to-scalar Ratio Measurements through Map-based Studies

    Full text link
    It has been pointed out that the spurious Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) B-mode polarization signals caused by the absorption of the CMB monopole component due to the Galactic interstellar matter, called the CMB shadow, degrade the accuracy of detecting the CMB B-mode polarization signals imprinted by primordial gravitational waves. We have made a realistic estimation using simulated sky maps of how the CMB shadow affects forthcoming high-precision CMB B-mode experiments for the first time. The Delta-map method, an internal template method taking into account the first-order spatial variation of foregrounds' spectral parameters, is applied as a foreground removal method. We show that if the CMB shadow effects are not taken into account in the foreground removal process, future observations would lead to the false detection of the CMB B-mode polarization signals originating from primordial gravitational waves. We also show that the effect of the CMB shadow can be mitigated by our revised Delta-map method to target the CMB B-mode polarization signals at the level of tensor-to-scalar ratio r=0.001.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    Investigation of electrical transport in anodized single TiO2 nanotubes

    Get PDF
    Electrical transport in anodized single titania nanotube (TNT) free from any structural effects of titania nanotube array (TNA) was investigated. An anodized TNA was disassembled into single TNTs with two-step anodization technique. Then, single TNT bridges between gold electrodes with a gap of 500 nm were prepared by dielectrophoretic alignment. Quantitative assessment of electron mobility inside single anatase and rutile TNT was carried out by 2-probe current-voltage measurement and analysis based on a metal-semiconductor-metal circuit model with Schottky barriers. Our approach to intrinsic electrical transport of single nanotube is quite effective for understanding the electronic and optical properties of TNA

    Germ Cell Transplantation Using Sexually Competent Fish: An Approach for Rapid Propagation of Endangered and Valuable Germlines

    The transplantation of germ cells into adult recipient gonads is a tool with wide applications in animal breeding and conservation of valuable and/or endangered species; it also provides a means for basic studies involving germ cell (GC) proliferation and differentiation. Here we describe the establishment of a working model for xenogeneic germ cell transplantation (GCT) in sexually competent fish. Spermatogonial cells isolated from juveniles of one species, the pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis (Atherinopsidae), were surgically transplanted into the gonads of sexually mature Patagonian pejerrey O. hatcheri, which have been partially depleted of endogenous GCs by a combination of Busulfan (40 mg/kg) and high water temperature (25°C) treatments. The observation of the donor cells' behavior showed that transplanted spermatogonial cells were able to recolonize the recipients' gonads and resume spermatogenesis within 6 months from the GCT. The presence of donor-derived gametes was confirmed by PCR in 20% of the surrogate O. hatcheri fathers at 6 months and crosses with O. bonariensis mothers produced hybrids and pure O. bonariensis, with donor-derived germline transmission rates of 1.2–13.3%. These findings indicate that transplantation of spermatogonial cells into sexually competent fish can shorten considerably the production time of donor-derived gametes and offspring and could play a vital role in germline conservation and propagation of valued and/or endangered fish species
