The Effect of Variables on the Penetration of Starch Applied at the Size Press

The literature from 1925 until the present was searched as it related to the above topic. It was organized into three areas. The first relates the reasons for surface sizing a sheet and how penetration affects them. The second topic states the beliefs as to which variables affect penetration and how they are believed to affect it. The last area concerns the work that has been done in this field. This work has been looking due to a lack of good procedure. Some work has been done on starch coating adhesives and this was searched for useable technique

Mother-to-Mother: Creating A Peer Mentor Program for Mothers in Homelessness

Mothers with children represent a growing segment of the homeless population. The American Psychological Association (APA) responded to the problem by initiating a task force in 2009 calling psychologists to step forward and enhance the treatment and services available for this population. However, providing treatment is often a challenge for this population because of the power differential and other barriers that negatively impact the potential relationship between mental health providers and the person living in homelessness (Hoffman & Coffey, 2008). The use of a peer mentor to mitigate the risk factors for a specific population has been an effective intervention used by multiple support and advocacy groups (e.g. NAMI, AA). Building on research supporting the effectiveness of a peer-mentoring model, this study explored the impact of a mentoring program on the self-efficacy, self-esteem and self-perception of overall functioning for mothers experiencing homelessness. Using a repeated measures ANOVA design, this study compared the effectiveness of two mentoring approaches. One group of mentors were trained to incorporate a structured, brief intervention model (5A’s) into the meetings with their mentees versus a group of mentors using an unstructured approach for mentee meetings. Results showed that a four-session peer mentoring program significantly improved perceived overall functioning for both groups of mentees. However, the study did not find a statistical differences between the structured versus unstructured groups. Discussion and implications for future studies are included

Alternatives for Regulatory Control of Acid Rain in the Northeastern United States

This Article will define regulatory options for curbing acid rain the northeastern United States. The first section will discuss those provisions of the Clean Air Act which address interstate air pollution. The second section examines the prominent proposals for amending the Clean Air Act to provide for acid rain regulation as enunciated by legislators, commentators and environmental organizations. The third section presents a two-pronged recommendation for broadening the Clean Air Act to prevent and control acid rain

Social Policy Resources for Social Work: Grey Literature and the Internet

Accreditation standards for professional schools offering social work degrees mandate curriculum content that provides students with skills to analyze, formulate, and influence social policies. An important source of analytical thinking about social policy is the “grey” literature issued by public policy organizations, think tanks, university-based research institutions, professional organizations, etc., that is increasingly available via the Internet. This research surveys library social work subject pages for content and links related to the social policy grey literature. A coding scheme was developed that counted the number of paths to relevant grey literature from the libraries’ subject guides. The results of the study suggest that there is a great deal of variance across institutions in how much help they provide users. Libraries must do a better job guiding users to the policy organizations that produce reports, briefs, newsletters, etc., that are important to social policy problem solving and implementation
