Cockpit displays of traffic information: Airline pilots opinions about content, symbology, and format
A number of candidate computer-generated cockpit displays of traffic information (CDTI) displays and display options were simulated statically and were shown to 23 airline pilots who were asked to respond to more than 250 questions about them. The pilots indicated that the amount and complexity of navigation information displayed should increase with altitude and map scale. Terrain information should appear automatically if a pilot's own aircraft descends below the minimum safe altitude and should include only those obstruction within 2,000 ft or less. Few pilots that weather information should be displayed on a CDTI, but if it was, it should be at pilot request only. A chevron-shaped symbol, located so that the majority of the map area was ahead was preferred. The position, altitude, ground speed, ground track, weight class, and flightpath history of other aircraft should be presented graphically by coding the shape of the symbol for other aircraft or presented digitally in data tags displayed at pilot request. All pilots thought that color coding was necessary to recognize different categories of information quickly and accurately. The majority of pilots felt that a CDTI would provide useful information even though its presence might increase their workload somewhat particularly during its introductory stages
An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of the experiential perspectives of volunteer befrienders, pertaining to causes of suicidality and prevention
Background and Objectives: Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for people age 15 to 29 and is estimated to be responsible for 800,000 deaths, annually. With each death by suicide, there are approximately 20 attempted suicides. In the United Kingdom, suicide is the leading cause of death for men aged 20 to 35 and for women aged 35 to 49. The dominant research and preventative initiatives exist through a medical lens; a perspective that often receives criticism for not incorporating social and culturally relevant variables. To date, research into alternative methods of support for the suicidal is scarce. This study seeks to obtain information pertaining to suicidality from the perspective of volunteer befrienders at MayTree Respite Centre, a London-based charity known for offering non-medical support for the suicidal. The objectives of the study were to explore the common causal themes of suicidality, perspectives of the medical model approach to suicide, as well as the limitations and advantages of the MayTree model.
Materials and Methods: Data was collected through 8 semi-structured individual interviews with MayTree Volunteers. The interviews were audio-recorded and subsequently transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were then analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach.
Results: A total of 4 superordinate themes emerged: suicide as a means through which to escape one’s problems; causal attributions of suicidality, which contained adverse life experiences, low self-concept, as well as isolation and not being heard; perceptions of the medical model, which included a reductionist correlation between biology and suicide, as well as stigma; limitations to the MayTree model, encapsulating their drug and alcohol policy, as well as duration of stay/follow-ups; and advantages to the MayTree model, reported as the benefits of be-friending and of a non-judgmental atmosphere.
Conclusion: It was highlighted neither model could be deemed superior to the other, rather that these approaches would be more effective if greater collaboration was evident. Collaborative efforts do appear to be demonstrated by MayTree, through its recognition of the complexity of certain cases of suicidality, and professional care needed when this arises
Monopole clusters in Abelian projected gauge theories
We show that the monopole currents which one obtains in the maximally Abelian
gauge of SU(2) fall into two quite distinct classes (when the volume is large
enough). In each field configuration there is precisely one cluster that
permeates the whole lattice volume. It has a current density and a magnetic
screening mass that scale and it produces the whole of the string tension. The
remaining clusters have a number density that follows an approximate power law
proportional to the inverse cube of l where l is the length of the monopole
world line in lattice units. These clusters are localised in space-time with
radii which vary as the square root of l. In terms of the radius r these
`lumps' have a scale-invariant distribution proportional to (dr/r . 1/{r^4}).
Moreover they appear not to contribute at all to the string tension. The fact
that they are scale-invariant at small distances would seem to rule out an

Multiple curved descending approaches and the air traffic control problem
A terminal area air traffic control simulation was designed to study ways of accommodating increased air traffic density. The concepts that were investigated assumed the availability of the microwave landing system and data link and included: (1) multiple curved descending final approaches; (2) parallel runways certified for independent and simultaneous operation under IFR conditions; (3) closer spacing between successive aircraft; and (4) a distributed management system between the air and ground. Three groups each consisting of three pilots and two air traffic controllers flew a combined total of 350 approaches. Piloted simulators were supplied with computer generated traffic situation displays and flight instruments. The controllers were supplied with a terminal area map and digital status information. Pilots and controllers also reported that the distributed management procedure was somewhat more safe and orderly than the centralized management procedure. Flying precision increased as the amount of turn required to intersect the outer mark decreased. Pilots reported that they preferred the alternative of multiple curved descending approaches with wider spacing between aircraft to closer spacing on single, straight in finals while controllers preferred the latter option. Both pilots and controllers felt that parallel runways are an acceptable way to accommodate increased traffic density safely and expeditiously

Study protocol: Delayed intervention randomised controlled trial within the Medical Research Council (MRC) Framework to assess the effectiveness of a new palliative care service
Background: Palliative care has been proposed to help meet the needs of patients who suffer
progressive non-cancer conditions but there have been few evaluations of service development
initiatives. We report here a novel protocol for the evaluation of a new palliative care service in
this context.
Methods/Design: Using the MRC Framework for the Evaluation of Complex Interventions we
modelled a new palliative care and neurology service for patients severely affected by Multiple
Sclerosis (MS). We conducted qualitative interviews with patients, families and staff, plus a
literature review to model and pilot the service. Then we designed a delayed intervention
randomised controlled trial to test its effectiveness as part of phase II of the MRC framework.
Inclusion criteria for the trial were patients identified by referring clinicians as having unresolved
symptoms or psychological concerns. Referrers were advised to use a score of greater than 8 on
the Expanded Disability Scale was a benchmark. Consenting patients newly referred to the new
service were randomised to either receive the palliative care service immediately (fast-track) or
after a 12-week wait (standard best practice). Face to face interviews were conducted at baseline
(before intervention), and at 4–6, 10–12 (before intervention for the standard-practice group), 16–
18 and 22–24 weeks with patients and their carers using standard questionnaires to assess
symptoms, palliative care outcomes, function, service use and open comments. Ethics committee
approval was granted separately for the qualitative phase and then for the trial.
Discussion: We publish the protocol trial here, to allow methods to be reviewed in advance of
publication of the results. The MRC Framework for the Evaluation of Complex Interventions was
helpful in both the design of the service, methods for evaluation in convincing staff and the ethics
committee to accept the trial. The research will provide valuable information on the effects of
palliative care among non-cancer patients and a method to evaluate palliative care in this context
InP homojunction solar cell performance on the LIPS 3 flight experiment
Performance data for the NASA Lewis Research Center indium phosphide n+p homojunction solar cell module on the LIPS 3 Flight Experiment is presented. The objective of the experiment is to measure the performance of InP cells in the natural radiation environment of the 1100 km altitude, 60+ deg inclination orbit. Analysis of flight data indicates that the performance of the four cells throughout the first year is near expected values. No degradation in short-circuit current was seen, as was expected from radiation tolerance studies of similar cells. Details of the cell structure and flight module design are discussed. The results of the temperature dependency and radiation tolerance studies necessary for normalization and analysis of the data are included
A robust Bayesian analysis of the impact of policy decisions on crop rotations.
We analyse the impact of a policy decision on crop rotations, using the imprecise land use model that was developed by the authors in earlier work. A specific challenge in crop rotation models is that farmer’s crop choices are driven by both policy changes and external non-stationary factors, such as rainfall, temperature and agricultural input and output prices. Such dynamics can be modelled by a non-stationary stochastic process, where crop transition probabilities are multinomial logistic functions of such external factors. We use a robust Bayesian approach to estimate the parameters of our model, and validate it by comparing the model response with a non-parametric estimate, as well as by cross validation. Finally, we use the resulting predictions to solve a hypothetical yet realistic policy problem
