    Simultaneous calculation of the helical pitch and the twist elastic constant in chiral liquid crystals from intermolecular torques

    We present a molecular simulation method that yields simultaneously the equilibrium pitch wave number q and the twist elastic constant K2 of a chiral nematic liquid crystal by sampling the torque density. A simulation of an untwisted system in periodic boundary conditions gives the product K2q; a further simulation with a uniform twist applied provides enough information to separately determine the two factors. We test our new method for a model potential, comparing the results with K2q from a thermodynamic integration route, and with K2 from an order fluctuation analysis. We also present a thermodynamic perturbation theory analysis valid in the limit of weak chirality

    We investigate the effect of weak disorder on different coupled qq-state Potts models with q4q\le 4 using two loops renormalisation group. This study presents new examples of first order transitions driven by randomness. We found that weak disorder makes the models decouple. Therefore, it appears that no relations emerge, at a perturbation level, between the disordered q1×q2q_1\times q_2-state Potts model and the two disordered q1q_1, q2q_2-state Potts models (q1q2q_1\ne q_2), despite their central charges are similar according to recent numerical investigations. Nevertheless, when two qq-state Potts models are considered (q>2q>2), the system remains always driven in a strong coupling regime, violating apparently the Imry-Wortis argument.Comment: 7 pages + 1 PS figure (Latex

    The nature of violent conflict in the world has changed in recent decades, both in its actual subject-matter and in the form of its expression. One of the most dramatic changes has been the trend away from traditional inter-state conflict (that is, a war between sovereign states) and towards intra-state conflict (that is, one which takes place between factions within an existing state). Whereas most violent conflicts over the course of the twentieth century have been between states, in the 1990s almost all major conflicts around the world have taken place within states. Between 1989 and 1996, for example, 95 of the 101 armed conflicts identified around the world were such internal disputes. Most of these conflicts were propelled, at least in part, by quests for self-determination or adequate recognition of communal identity rather than by ideology or the conquest of territory. This represents a major shift in the manifestation of human conflict, especially compared to the world wars and major inter-state conflicts fought over the course of this century

    Diluted Networks of Nonlinear Resistors and Fractal Dimensions of Percolation Clusters

    We study random networks of nonlinear resistors, which obey a generalized Ohm's law, VIrV\sim I^r. Our renormalized field theory, which thrives on an interpretation of the involved Feynman Diagrams as being resistor networks themselves, is presented in detail. By considering distinct values of the nonlinearity r, we calculate several fractal dimensions characterizing percolation clusters. For the dimension associated with the red bonds we show that dred=1/νd_{\scriptsize red} = 1/\nu at least to order {\sl O} (\epsilon^4), with ν\nu being the correlation length exponent, and ϵ=6d\epsilon = 6-d, where d denotes the spatial dimension. This result agrees with a rigorous one by Coniglio. Our result for the chemical distance, d_{\scriptsize min} = 2 - \epsilon /6 - [ 937/588 + 45/49 (\ln 2 -9/10 \ln 3)] (\epsilon /6)^2 + {\sl O} (\epsilon^3) verifies a previous calculation by one of us. For the backbone dimension we find D_B = 2 + \epsilon /21 - 172 \epsilon^2 /9261 + 2 (- 74639 + 22680 \zeta (3))\epsilon^3 /4084101 + {\sl O} (\epsilon^4), where ζ(3)=1.202057...\zeta (3) = 1.202057..., in agreement to second order in ϵ\epsilon with a two-loop calculation by Harris and Lubensky.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figure

    Fluctuations of the heat flux of a one-dimensional hard particle gas

    Momentum-conserving one-dimensional models are known to exhibit anomalous Fourier's law, with a thermal conductivity varying as a power law of the system size. Here we measure, by numerical simulations, several cumulants of the heat flux of a one-dimensional hard particle gas. We find that the cumulants, like the conductivity, vary as power laws of the system size. Our results also indicate that cumulants higher than the second follow different power laws when one compares the ring geometry at equilibrium and the linear case in contact with two heat baths (at equal or unequal temperatures). keywords: current fluctuations, anomalous Fourier law, hard particle gasComment: 5 figure
