Inclination-Independent Galaxy Classification
We present a new method to classify galaxies from large surveys like the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey using inclination-corrected concentration,
inclination-corrected location on the color-magnitude diagram, and apparent
axis ratio. Explicitly accounting for inclination tightens the distribution of
each of these parameters and enables simple boundaries to be drawn that
delineate three different galaxy populations: Early-type galaxies, which are
red, highly concentrated, and round; Late-type galaxies, which are blue, have
low concentrations, and are disk dominated; and Intermediate-type galaxies,
which are red, have intermediate concentrations, and have disks. We have
validated our method by comparing to visual classifications of high-quality
imaging data from the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue. The inclination correction
is crucial to unveiling the previously unrecognized Intermediate class.
Intermediate-type galaxies, roughly corresponding to lenticulars and early
spirals, lie on the red sequence. The red sequence is therefore composed of two
distinct morphological types, suggesting that there are two distinct mechanisms
for transiting to the red sequence. We propose that Intermediate-type galaxies
are those that have lost their cold gas via strangulation, while Early-type
galaxies are those that have experienced a major merger that either consumed
their cold gas, or whose merger progenitors were already devoid of cold gas

On the Formation of Galaxy Halos: Comparing NGC 5128 and the Local Group Members
The metallicity distribution function (MDF) for the old red-giant stars in
the halo of NGC 5128, the nearest giant elliptical galaxy, is virtually
identical with the MDF for the old-disk stars in the LMC and also strongly
resembles the halo MDF in M31. These galaxies all have high mean halo
metallicities ( ~ -0.4$) with very small proportions of low-metallicity
stars. These observations reinforce the view that metal-rich halos are quite
normal for large galaxies of all types. Such systems are unlikely to have built
up by accretion of pre-existing, gas-free small satellite galaxies, unless
these satellites had an extremely shallow mass distribution (d log N / d log M
> -1). We suggest that the halo of NGC 5128 is more likely to have assembled
from hierarchical merging of gas-rich lumps in which the bulk of star formation

An analysis of depot level repairables carcass management and position controls under the Advanced Traceability and Control (ATAC) program
Repairables are components andor sub assemblies which can be repaired if they become unserviceable. Repairables are typically high cost, long procurement leadtime items. Because of these characteristics, significant economies can be achieved by repairing these items rather than discarding them when they become unserviceable. Historically, these carcasses have been difficult to manage because, when they broke, maintenance personnel were primarily concerned with replacing them with ready-for-issue units; what happened to the carcass was of little concern. Defense Management Review Decision (DMRD) 901's objective to reduce supply system costs includes an initiative to achieve savings by retaining retrograde carcasses returned from the fleet at the first turn-in point rather than shipping them immediately to the repair depot or designated storage site. This thesis analyzes the operation of the ATAC Program to determine a 'ship or hold' decision for returned carcasses. A thorough study of ATAC's background, current management controls and operating procedures, and results from previous studies were combined with on-site hub observations to show how and why the ATAC system works. Because of ATAC, the DMRD 901 initiative to retain carcasses at their first turn-in point is not cost effective except for those items experiencing rapid phase-out or numerous upgrades. Month-Timescale Optical Variability in the M87 Jet
A previously inconspicuous knot in the M87 jet has undergone a dramatic
outburst and now exceeds the nucleus in optical and X-ray luminosity.
Monitoring of M87 with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory
during 2002-2003, has found month-timescale optical variability in both the
nucleus and HST-1, a knot in the jet 0.82'' from the nucleus. We discuss the
behavior of the variability timescales as well as spectral energy distribution
of both components. In the nucleus, we see nearly energy-independent
variability behavior. Knot HST-1, however, displays weak energy dependence in
both X-ray and optical bands, but with nearly comparable rise/decay timescales
at 220 nm and 0.5 keV. The flaring region of HST-1 appears stationary over
eight months of monitoring. We consider various emission models to explain the
variability of both components. The flares we see are similar to those seen in
blazars, albeit on longer timescales, and so could, if viewed at smaller

Erythrocyte n-6 Fatty Acids and Risk for Cardiovascular Outcomes and Total Mortality in the Framingham Heart Study
Background: The prognostic value of erythrocyte levels of n-6 fatty acids (FAs) for total mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes remains an open question. Methods: We examined cardiovascular (CV) outcomes and death in 2500 individuals in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort without prevalent CVD (mean age 66 years, 57% women) as a function of baseline levels of different length n-6 FAs (18 carbon, 20 carbon, and 22 carbon) in the erythrocyte membranes. Clinical outcomes were monitored for up to 9.5 years (median follow up, 7.26 years). Cox proportional hazards models were adjusted for a variety of demographic characteristics, clinical status, and red blood cell (RBC) n-6 and long chain n-3 FA content. Results: There were 245 CV events, 119 coronary heart disease (CHD) events, 105 ischemic strokes, 58 CVD deaths, and 350 deaths from all causes. Few associations between either mortality or CVD outcomes were observed for n-6 FAs, with those that were observed becoming non-significant after adjusting for n-3 FA levels. Conclusions: Higher circulating levels of marine n-3 FA levels are associated with reduced risk for incident CVD and ischemic stroke and for death from CHD and all-causes; however, in the same sample little evidence exists for association with n-6 FAs. Further work is needed to identify a full profile of FAs associated with cardiovascular risk and mortality
A 2dF spectroscopic study of globular clusters in NGC 5128: Probing the formation history of the nearest giant Elliptical
We have performed a spectroscopic study of globular clusters (GCs) in the
giant elliptical NGC 5128 using the 2dF facility at the Anglo-Australian
telescope. We obtained integrated optical spectra for a total of 254 GCs, 79 of
which are newly confirmed on the basis of their radial velocities and spectra.
In addition, we obtained an integrated spectrum of the galaxy starlight along
the southern major axis. We derive an empirical metallicity distribution
function (MDF) for 207 GCs (~14 of the estimated total GC system) based upon
Milky Way GCs. This MDF is multimodal at high statistical significance with
peaks at [Z/H]~-1.3 and -0.5. A comparison between the GC MDF and that of the
stellar halo at 20 kpc (~4 Reff) reveals close coincidence at the metal-rich
ends of the distributions. However, an inner 8 kpc stellar MDF shows a clear
excess of metal-rich stars when compared to the GCs. We compare a higher S/N
subsample (147 GCs) with two stellar population models which include non-solar
abundance ratio corrections. The vast majority of our sample (~90%) appears
old, with ages similar to the Milky Way GC system. There is evidence for a
population of intermediate-age (~4-8 Gy) GCs (<15% of the sample) which are on
average more metal-rich than the old GCs. We also identify at least one younger
cluster (~1-2 Gy) in the central regions of the galaxy. Our observations are
consistent with a picture where NGC 5128 has undergone at least two mergers
and/or interactions involving star formation and limited GC formation since
z=1, however the effect of non-canonical hot stellar populations on the
integrated spectra of GCs remains an outstanding uncertainty in our GC age

Globular Cluster Systems in Brightest Cluster Galaxies: Bimodal Metallicity Distributions and the Nature of the High-Luminosity Clusters
We present new (B,I) photometry for the globular cluster systems in eight
Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), obtained with the ACS/WFC camera on the
Hubble Space Telescope. In the very rich cluster systems that reside within
these giant galaxies, we find that all have strongly bimodal color
distributions All the BCGs show population gradients, with much higher relative
numbers of red clusters within 5 kpc of their centers, consistent with their
having formed at later times than the blue, metal-poor population. A striking
new feature of the color distributions emerging from our data is that for the
brightest clusters (M_I < -10.5) the color distribution becomes broad and less
obviously bimodal. we suggest that it may be a characteristic of many BCGs.
Furthermore, the blue (metal-poor) clusters become progressively redder with
increasing luminosity, following a mass/metallicity scaling relation Z ~
M^0.55. We argue that these GCS characteristics are consistent with a
hierarchical-merging formation picture in which the metal-poor clusters formed
in protogalactic clouds or dense starburst complexes with gas masses in the
range 10^7 - 10^10 M_Sun, but where the more massive clusters on average formed
in bigger clouds with deeper potential wells where more pre-enrichment could

Erythrocyte Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acid Levels are Inversely Associated with Mortality and with Incident Cardiovascular Disease: The Framingham Heart Study
Background: The extent to which omega-3 fatty acid status is related to risk for death from any cause and for incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains controversial. Objective: To examine these associations in the Framingham Heart Study. Design: Prospective and observational. Setting: Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort. Measurements: The exposure marker was red blood cell levels of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (the Omega-3 Index) measured at baseline. Outcomes included mortality (total, CVD, cancer, and other) and total CVD events in participants free of CVD at baseline. Follow-up was for a median of 7.3 years. Cox proportional hazards models were adjusted for 18 variables (demographic, clinical status, therapeutic, and CVD risk factors). Results: Among the 2500 participants (mean age 66 years, 54% women), there were 350 deaths (58 from CVD, 146 from cancer, 128 from other known causes, and 18 from unknown causes). There were 245 CVD events. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, a higher Omega-3 Index was associated with significantly lower risks (P-values for trends across quintiles) for total mortality (P = .02), for non-CVD and non-cancer mortality (P = .009), and for total CVD events (P = .008). Those in the highest (\u3e6.8%) compared to those in the lowest Omega-3 Index quintiles (\u3c4.2%) had a 34% lower risk for death from any cause and 39% lower risk for incident CVD. These associations were generally stronger for docosahexaenoic acid than for eicosapentaenoic acid. When total cholesterol was compared with the Omega-3 Index in the same models, the latter was significantly related with these outcomes, but the former was not. Limitations: Relatively short follow-up time and one-time exposure assessment. Conclusions: A higher Omega-3 Index was associated with reduced risk of both CVD and all-cause mortality
