    Centrality dependence of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 2.76 TeV

    The inclusive transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) distributions of primary charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range η<0.8|\eta|<0.8 as a function of event centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=2.76 TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The data are presented in the pTp_{\rm T} range 0.15<pT<500.15<p_{\rm T}<50 GeV/cc for nine centrality intervals from 70-80% to 0-5%. The Pb-Pb spectra are presented in terms of the nuclear modification factor RAAR_{\rm{AA}} using a pp reference spectrum measured at the same collision energy. We observe that the suppression of high-pTp_{\rm T} particles strongly depends on event centrality. In central collisions (0-5%) the yield is most suppressed with RAA0.13R_{\rm{AA}}\approx0.13 at pT=6p_{\rm T}=6-7 GeV/cc. Above pT=7p_{\rm T}=7 GeV/cc, there is a significant rise in the nuclear modification factor, which reaches RAA0.4R_{\rm{AA}} \approx0.4 for pT>30p_{\rm T}>30 GeV/cc. In peripheral collisions (70-80%), the suppression is weaker with RAA0.7R_{\rm{AA}} \approx 0.7 almost independently of pTp_{\rm T}.     Measurement of charm production at central rapidity in proton-proton collisions at s=2.76\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV

    The pTp_{\rm T}-differential production cross sections of the prompt (B feed-down subtracted) charmed mesons D0^0, D+^+, and D+^{*+} in the rapidity range y<0.5|y|<0.5, and for transverse momentum 1<pT<121< p_{\rm T} <12 GeV/cc, were measured in proton-proton collisions at s=2.76\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis exploited the hadronic decays D0^0 \rightarrow Kπ\pi, D+^+ \rightarrow Kππ\pi\pi, D+^{*+} \rightarrow D0π^0\pi, and their charge conjugates, and was performed on a Lint=1.1L_{\rm int} = 1.1 nb1^{-1} event sample collected in 2011 with a minimum-bias trigger. The total charm production cross section at s=2.76\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV and at 7 TeV was evaluated by extrapolating to the full phase space the pTp_{\rm T}-differential production cross sections at s=2.76\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV and our previous measurements at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV. The results were compared to existing measurements and to perturbative-QCD calculations.     Pion, kaon, and proton production in central Pb-Pb Collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV

    In this Letter we report the first results on π±\pi^\pm, K±^\pm, p and pp\mathrm {p\overline{p}} production at mid-rapidity (y<0.5\left|y\right|<0.5) in central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76 TeV, measured by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The pTp_{\rm T} distributions and yields are compared to previous results at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV and expectations from hydrodynamic and thermal models. The spectral shapes indicate a strong increase of the radial flow velocity with sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}, which in hydrodynamic models is expected as a consequence of the increasing particle density. While the K/π{\rm K}/\pi ratio is in line with predictions from the thermal model, the p/π{\rm p}/\pi ratio is found to be lower by a factor of about 1.5.     Measurements of cross sections of inelastic and diffractive processes in proton--proton collisions at LHC energies were carried out with the ALICE detector. The fractions of diffractive processes in inelastic collisions were determined from a study of gaps in charged particle pseudorapidity distributions: for single diffraction (diffractive mass MX3M_X 3) σDD/σINEL=0.11±0.03,0.12±0.05\sigma_{\rm DD}/\sigma_{\rm INEL} = 0.11 \pm 0.03, 0.12 \pm 0.05, and 0.120.04+0.050.12^{+0.05}_{-0.04}, respectively at s=0.9,2.76\sqrt{s} = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV. To measure the inelastic cross section, beam properties were determined with van der Meer scans, and, using a simulation of diffraction adjusted to data, the following values were obtained: σINEL=62.84.0+2.4(model)±1.2(lumi)\sigma_{\rm INEL} = 62.8^{+2.4}_{-4.0} (model) \pm 1.2 (lumi) mb at s=\sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV and 73.24.6+2.0(model)±2.6(lumi)73.2^{+2.0}_{-4.6} (model) \pm 2.6 (lumi) mb at s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV. The single- and double-diffractive cross sections were calculated combining relative rates of diffraction with inelastic cross sections. The results are compared to previous measurements at proton--antiproton and proton--proton colliders at lower energies, to measurements by other experiments at the LHC, and to theoretical models

    Charmonium and e+e- pair photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 Tev

    The ALICE Collaboration at the LHC has measured the J/ψ and ψ′ photoproduction at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 Tev. The charmonium is identified via its leptonic decay for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 23 μb-1. The cross section for coherent and incoherent J/ψ production in the rapidity interval -0.9&amp;lt;y&amp;lt;0.9, are dσJ/ψcoh/dy = 2.38-0.24+0.34 (sta+sys) mb and dσJ/ψinc/dy = 0.98-0.17+0.19(sta+sys) mb, respectively. The results are compared to theoretical models for J/ψ production and the coherent cross section is found to be in good agreement with those models incorporating moderate nuclear gluon shadowing at Bjorken-x around 10-3, such as EPS09 parametrization. In addition the cross section for the process γγ→e + e - has been measured and found to be in agreement with models implementing QED at leading order. © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the ALICE collaboration

    Coherent J/ψ photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76TeV

    The ALICE Collaboration has made the first measurement at the LHC of J/ψ photoproduction in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76TeV. The J/ψ is identified via its dimuon decay in the forward rapidity region with the muon spectrometer for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 55 μb-1. The cross section for coherent J/ψ production in the rapidity interval -3.6&amp;lt;y&amp;lt;-2.6 is measured to be dσJ/ψcoh/dy=1.00±0.18(stat)-0.26+0.24(syst)mb. The result is compared to theoretical models for coherent J/ψ production and found to be in good agreement with those models which include nuclear gluon shadowing. © 2012 CERN

    Centrality dependence of the pseudorapidity density distribution for charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76TeV

    We present the first wide-range measurement of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density distribution, for different centralities (the 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, and 20-30% most central events) in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed using the full coverage of the ALICE detectors, -5.0&amp;lt;η&amp;lt;5.5, and employing a special analysis technique based on collisions arising from LHC &apos;satellite&apos; bunches. We present the pseudorapidity density as a function of the number of participating nucleons as well as an extrapolation to the total number of produced charged particles (Nch=17165±772 for the 0-5% most central collisions). From the measured dNch/dη distribution we derive the rapidity density distribution, dNch/dy, under simple assumptions. The rapidity density distribution is found to be significantly wider than the predictions of the Landau model. We assess the validity of longitudinal scaling by comparing to lower energy results from RHIC. Finally the mechanisms of the underlying particle production are discussed based on a comparison with various theoretical models. © 2013 CERN

    Charge correlations using the balance function in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV

    In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, the correlations between the emitted particles can be used as a probe to gain insight into the charge creation mechanisms. In this Letter, we report the first results of such studies using the electric charge balance function in the relative pseudorapidity (d?) and azimuthal angle (df) in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The width of the balance function decreases with growing centrality (i.e. for more central collisions) in both projections. This centrality dependence is not reproduced by HIJING, while AMPT, a model which incorporates strings and parton rescattering, exhibits qualitative agreement with the measured correlations in df but fails to describe the correlations in d?. A thermal blast-wave model incorporating local charge conservation and tuned to describe the pTspectra and v2measurements reported by ALICE, is used to fit the centrality dependence of the width of the balance function and to extract the average separation of balancing charges at freeze-out. The comparison of our results with measurements at lower energies reveals an ordering with sNN: the balance functions become narrower with increasing energy for all centralities. This is consistent with the effect of larger radial flow at the LHC energies but also with the late stage creation scenario of balancing charges. However, the relative decrease of the balance function widths in d? and df with centrality from the highest SPS to the LHC energy exhibits only small differences. This observation cannot be interpreted solely within the framework where the majority of the charge is produced at a later stage in the evolution of the heavy-ion collision. © 2013 CERN

    Measurement of the inclusive differential jet cross section in pp collisions at √s=2.76 TeV

    The ALICE collaboration at the CERN Large Hadron Collider reports the first measurement of the inclusive differential jet cross section at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at s = 2.76 TeV, with integrated luminosity of 13.6 nb−1. Jets are measured over the transverse momentum range 20 to 125 GeV/c and are corrected to the particle level. Calculations based on Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD are in good agreement with the measurements. The ratio of inclusive jet cross sections for jet radii R = 0.2 and R = 0.4 is reported, and is also well reproduced by a Next-to-Leading Order perturbative QCD calculation when hadronization effects are included. © 2013 CER

    Pseudorapidity Density of Charged Particles in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02\u2009\u2009TeV

    The charged-particle pseudorapidity density measured over four units of pseudorapidity in nonsingle-diffractive p+Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair 1asNN=5.02 TeV is presented. The average value at midrapidity is measured to be 16.81\ub10.71 (syst), which corresponds to 2.14\ub10.17 (syst) per participating nucleon, calculated with the Glauber model. This is 16% lower than in nonsingle-diffractive pp collisions interpolated to the same collision energy and 84% higher than in d+Au collisions at 1asNN=0.2 TeV. The measured pseudorapidity density in p+Pb collisions is compared to model predictions and provides new constraints on the description of particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions
