During Troubles in Northern Ireland, a substantial number of academics took part in the debates relating to the many analogies drawn between the Irish and Algerian experiences. Hugh Roberts and his opponents, notwithstanding their interpretative divergences, agreed to use the generic term “the Algerian analogy”, which, according to them, refers to the idea that a Gaullist solution, in other words a withdrawal of British troops and the abandonment of loyalists to their fate, would be inevitable in Northern Ireland. This is also the definition favoured by such scholars as Adrian Guelke and Frank Wright. Despite its merits, their definition seems quite monolithic, in that it tends to overlook the various perspectives of the numerous people who mentioned the Algerian precedent between the late 1960s and the 1990s. The purpose of this article is thus not so much to invalidate the definition proposed by Roberts, Wright and Guelke, as to qualify and refine it, in light of the parliamentary debates that took place at Westminster. The latter reveal the multiple ways in which the analogies between Northern Ireland and French Algeria were used, not least because their occurrences extend well beyond the discourse produced by the advocates of British disengagement from Northern Ireland

Patrick Anderson, Rewriting the Troubles. War and Propaganda, Ireland and Algeria

    Mirror images, cross-representations and coloniality : a history of (anti-)analogies between the Anglo-Irish and Franco-Algerian conflicts, 1830-1998

    No full text
Can Anglo-Irish and Franco-Algerian relations be compared? A negative answer would nowadays instinctively spring to mind. Yet, from a historical perspective, (anti-)analogies between the conflicts that opposed the French and the Algerians on the one hand, and the British and the Irish on the other, flourished almost throughout the period spanning from the French expedition against Algiers in 1830 to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. This dissertation undertakes to make up for the absence of academic overviews of those (anti-)analogies, by retracing their history. Thus, its purpose is to analyse how the French and the Algerians perceived the Anglo-Irish conflict, drew inspiration from it, represented it, and identified with its protagonists; and, conversely, how the British and the Irish perceived their own shared history through the mirror of the Franco-Algerian conflict.By adopting a transnational and diachronic approach, our aim is, more specifically, to demonstrate both that the aforementioned (anti-)analogies are characterised by their plurality, and that they are prescribed or proscribed in accordance not only with people's political and ideological inclinations, but also with the changing circumstances during the course of the three historical moments under study: the conquest of Algeria (1830-1902), the era of decolonisation (1921-1962), and the Troubles in Northern Ireland (1968-1998). Given the very themes it deals with, this dissertation is intended to be a contribution to existing scholarship on the coloniality of Ireland and, as such, falls within the fields of British and Irish studies

This study is about the Analysis of Errors in Inflectional Morphemes produced by the Academic Writing and Presentation Class students of the English Department of Airlangga University. The focus of this study is to investigate the occurrence of errors particularly in inflectional morphemes, to find out the types of errors and the most occurrence errors in inflectional morphemes produced by the Academic Writing and Presentation class students of the English Department of Airlangga University. In this study, the researcher uses Ellis’ theory about error analysis. According to Ellis, the procedures of analyzing errors consist of identification, description, and explanation of errors. In order to classify the types of inflectional morphemes, the researcher uses Katamba’s theory and to classify the types of errors, the researcher uses Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s theory. First, the researcher identifies the errors. Second, he classifies the errors into certain types of inflectional morphemes and errors based on Katamba’s and Dulay, Burt, and Krashen’s theories. Katamba divided inflectional morphemes into seven types; plural, genitive, agreement, present-participle, past-participle, comparative, and superlative morphemes; while Dulay, Burt, and Krashen divided errors into five types; omission, addition, overgeneralization, misformation and misordering. Finally, he describes and explains these types of errors that are produced by the students of Academic Presentation and Writing Class of the English Department of Airlangga University. After doing the analysis, the researcher finds 265 errors in inflectional morphemes. The most frequent error is agreement morpheme (129 errors or 48.68%) that consists of 88 errors in omission, 26 errors in addition, and 15 errors in misformation. The second most frequent error is plural morpheme (94 errors or 35.47%) and the third most frequent error is genitive morpheme (38 errors or 14.34%)
