Moment of Inertia Dependence of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines in Pulsating Winds

    Get PDF
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) are unaffected by changes in wind direction, and they have a simple structure and the potential for high efficiency due to their lift driving force. However, VAWTs are affected by changes in wind speed, owing to effects originating from the moment of inertia. In this study, changes in the rotational speed of a small VAWT in pulsating wind, generated by an unsteady wind tunnel, are investigated by varying the wind cycle and amplitude parameters. It is shown that the responses observed experimentally agree with simulations based on torque characteristics obtained under steady rotational conditions. Additionally, a simple equation expressing the relationship between the rotational change width and amplitude of the pulsating wind is presented. The energy efficiency in a pulsating wind remains constant with changes in both the moment of inertia and the wind cycle; however, the energy efficiency decreases when the wind amplitude is large

Clonal origin of Epstein-Barr virus-infected T/NK-cell subpopulations in chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection

Clonal expansion of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infected B-cells occasionally occurs in immunocompromized subjects. EBV-infected T/natural killer (NK)-cells proliferate in patients with chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV) that is a rare mononucleosis syndrome. It is classified into either T-cell type or NK-cell type according to the primary target of infection, while the pathogenesis remains unclear. To search the clonal origin of EBV-infected T/NK-cells, virus distribution and clonotype were assessed by using highly purified cell fractions obtained from 6 patients. Patient 1 had a monoclonal proliferation of EBV-infected T-cell receptor Vδ2/Vγ9-expressing cells, and carried lower copy number of EBV in αβT-cells. Patients 2 and 3 had a clonal expansion of EBV-infected CD4+T-cells, and lower EBV load in CD56+cells. Patients 4, 5 and 6 had an expansion of CD56+cells with higher EBV load than CD3+cells. EBV-terminal repeats were determined as clonal bands in the minor targeted populations of 5 patients. The size of terminal repeats indicated the same clonotype in minor subsets as in major subsets of 4 patients. However, EBV was not detected in bone marrow-derived lineage negative CD34+cells of patients. These results suggested that EBV could infect T/NK-cells at differentiation stage, but spared bone marrow CD34+hematopoietic stem cells in CAEBV patients

Hematological studies on iron- and folate-requirements in pregnancy

    Get PDF
Hematological changes and serum iron, vitamin B12 and folate levels after administration of iron plus folic acid were com· pared with changes and levels after supplement of iron alone in 100 pregnant women. No hematological benefits by adding folic acid was revealed. It is concluded that folic acid deficiency in pregnant women is mild and routine supplementation of folic acid is not necessary except for proved cases of folate deficiency. As to the reason why folic acid deficiency is so mild and megaloblastic anemia is so rare in Japan, uniformity of dietary habits, i. e. boiled rice as basic food, was discussed.</p

Myocarditis mimicking acute coronary syndrome following influenza B virus infection: a case report

We present a notable case of a 15-year-old male infected with influenza B virus who showed the clinical manifestations of myocardial ischemia. He was admitted to our hospital with sudden chest pain. He had febrile illness for the past 2 days. Rapid antigen test for influenza revealed positive influenza B virus antigen. The initial electrocardiogram showed elevation of the ST-segments in leads II, II, aVF and reciprocal depression in leads V1 and V2. Serum test showed elevation of creatine kinase and troponin T. Gadlinium-enchanced magnetic resonance imaging, Tl-201 and I-123 beta-methyl-p-iodephenyl-pentadecanoic acid scintigram, coronary angiography revealed no abnormality. Follow-up electrocardiogram showed ST-segment change improvement over the course. Myocarditis associated with influenza B virus seemed to be caused by endothelial impairment and disturbance of microcirculation rather than direct injury to cardiac myocytes

Cellular Fragments as Biomaterial for Rapid In Vitro Bone-Like Tissue Synthesis

Current stem cell-based techniques for bone-like tissue synthesis require at least two to three weeks. Therefore, novel techniques to promote rapid 3D bone-like tissue synthesis in vitro are still required. In this study, we explored the concept of using cell nanofragments as a substrate material to promote rapid bone formation in vitro. The methods for cell nanofragment fabrication were ultrasonication (30 s and 3 min), non-ionic detergent (triton 0.1% and 1%), or freeze-dried powder. The results showed that ultrasonication for 3 min allowed the fabrication of homogeneous nanofragments of less than 150 nm in length, which mineralized surprisingly in just one day, faster than the fragments obtained from all other methods. Further optimization of culture conditions indicated that a concentration of 10 mM or 100 mM of beta-glycerophosphate enhanced, whereas fetal bovine serum (FBS) inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner, the mineralization of the cell nanofragments. Finally, a 3D collagen-cell nanofragment-mineral complex mimicking a bone-like structure was generated in just two days by combining the cell nanofragments in collagen gel. In conclusion, sonication for three min could be applied as a novel method to fabricate cell nanofragments of less than 150 nm in length, which can be used as a material for in vitro bone tissue engineering

Immunohistochemical detection of procalcitonin in fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma

A 25-year-old woman with fever and epigastric pain was referred to our hospital. Blood examination showed significant liver dysfunction, markedly high C-reactive protein (CRP 19.1 mg/dL) and procalcitonin (48.3 ng/mL) levels. Dynamic computed tomography showed a tumor approximately 120 mm in size in the right lobe of the liver, but with no abscess formation. The patient was hospitalized and started on antibiotics; her CRP level improved, but the procalcitonin level did not decrease. Histopathological examination of the liver tumor biopsy revealed fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FLC). Positive staining of the FLC with an anti-procalcitonin antibody suggested the production of procalcitonin

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological projective method TAT (Thematic apperception test) as an assessment tool detecting interpersonal anxiety and affirmative self-consciousness on undergraduate students. On the first study, subjects’ narratives to all of TAT cards were analyzed in criteria of evoking high anxiety response and self-affirmatives. Eleven of TAT cards were selected as stimulus cards projecting anxiety and self-affirmative. Subjects responded to an interpersonal-anxiety questionnaire and a self-affirmative questionnaire, and they were asked to make narratives of selected eleven of TAT cards. The result showed that subjects with high interpersonal-anxiety gave narratives of conflicting or keeping a positive interrelationship with others. On the other hand, subjects with high self-affirmative gave narratives of having a positive interrelationship or expressing a positive expectation to their future. For the next study, five of eleven cards were selected in criteria of projecting high self-anxiety and self-affirmative; cards 1, 2, 9GF, 13B and 14 were selected. On the second study, post-TAT questionnaire items were created for feedback to subject’s self-understanding of anxiety or affirmative. And the responses of post-TAT questionnaire items were examined. Result showed that subjects with high-anxiety were sensitive to expression of gazing. Through responding to post-TAT questionnaire items, subjects noticed new aspect of interpersonal relationship and their self-recognition as a result
