Particle parameter analyzing system
An X-Y plotter circuit apparatus is described which displays an input pulse representing particle parameter information, that would ordinarily appear on the screen of an oscilloscope as a rectangular pulse, as a single dot positioned on the screen where the upper right hand corner of the input pulse would have appeared. If another event occurs, and it is desired to display this event, the apparatus is provided to replace the dot with a short horizontal line

Primal-dual variable neighborhood search for the simple plant-location problem
Copyright @ 2007 INFORMSThe variable neighborhood search metaheuristic is applied to the primal simple plant-location problem and to a reduced dual obtained by exploiting the complementary slackness conditions. This leads to (i) heuristic resolution of (metric) instances with uniform fixed costs, up to n = 15,000 users, and m = n potential locations for facilities with an error not exceeding 0.04%; (ii) exact solution of such instances with up to m = n = 7,000; and (iii) exact solutions of instances with variable fixed costs and up to m = n = 15, 000.This work is supported by NSERC Grant 105574-02; NSERC Grant OGP205041; and partly by the Serbian Ministry of Science, Project 1583
Oscilloscope used as X-Y plotter or two-dimensional analyzer
Oscilloscope used as an X-Y plotter or two-dimensional analyzer tags each point with a yes or no, depending on a third parameter. The usual square-wave pulse is replaced on the scope by a single information-bearing dot which lengthens to a dash in response to a simultaneous event
Modal cut-off and the V-parameter in photonic crystal fibers
We address the long-standing unresolved problem concerning the V-parameter in
a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). Formulate the parameter appropriate for a
core-defect in a periodic structure we argue that the multi-mode cut-off occurs
at a wavelength lambda* which satisfies V_PCF(lambda*)=pi. Comparing to
numerics and recent cut-off calculations we confirm this result.Comment: 3 pages including 2 figures. Accepted for Optics Letter

Tunable BODIPY derivatives amenable to "click" and peptide chemistry
Novel azido- and amino- functionalised fluorescent probes based on the BODIPY framework have been developed. The probes can be easily and cheaply synthesised, exhibit the highly desirable BODIPY fluorescent properties, and are amenable to âclickâ and peptide chemistry methodologies. These probes provide a stable and readily available tool amenable for the visualisation of both solution and solid supported events
