Antibody-antigen interactions: What is the required time to equilibrium?
The use of antibodies is widespread in many areas including in-vivo and in-vitro diagnostics, quantitative analysis in research laboratories and as therapeutic substances. Since the methods for generation of antibodies has improved and regularly results in high-affinity interactions, the standard assays used for quantification of the interaction properties should be revisited because they do not necessarily produce accurate results. Here we show that in several cases, the affinity determination of strongly binding antibodies will be inherently difficult when using standard procedures, due to impractically long incubation times. Real-time kinetic analysis is often the only realistic alternative for affinity determination
A trans-diagnostic perspective on obsessive-compulsive disorder

This is an Open Access article, distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution licence (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted re-use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Progress in understanding the underlying neurobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has stalled in part because of the considerable problem of heterogeneity within this diagnostic category, and homogeneity across other putatively discrete, diagnostic categories. As psychiatry begins to recognize the shortcomings of a purely symptom-based psychiatric nosology, new data-driven approaches have begun to be utilized with the goal of solving these problems: specifically, identifying trans-diagnostic aspects of clinical phenomenology based on their association with neurobiological processes. In this review, we describe key methodological approaches to understanding OCD from this perspective and highlight the candidate traits that have already been identified as a result of these early endeavours. We discuss how important inferences can be made from pre-existing case-control studies as well as showcasing newer methods that rely on large general population datasets to refine and validate psychiatric phenotypes. As exemplars, we take 'compulsivity' and 'anxiety', putatively trans-diagnostic symptom dimensions that are linked to well-defined neurobiological mechanisms, goal-directed learning and error-related negativity, respectively. We argue that the identification of biologically valid, more homogeneous, dimensions such as these provides renewed optimism for identifying reliable genetic contributions to OCD and other disorders, improving animal models and critically, provides a path towards a future of more targeted psychiatric treatments.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Routine But Ribald. Intimacy in Stefan Żeromski’s Journals
Stefan Żeromski’s Journals concern mostly matters of intellectual (book, theatre, and exhibition reviews, writing techniques) and personal character, with the latter including some very intimate material. Żeromski was an exhibitionist in his writing. He described his autoerotic practices, his visits to brothels, details of sexual relationships with his mistresses, as well as some personal problems of his friends and acquaintances. The present analysis of the writer’s Journals focuses on how Żeromski tended to write about his intimate life, what matters and to what extent were treated as taboo by the author himself, by people from his closest circle, by readers of the manuscript version of his Journals, and finally, by editors and publishers of two 20th-century editions of his work. Taking this perspective, the close reading of Żeromski’s Journals will thus concentrate on issues such as private life, taboo, censorship and self-censorship
Effective-one-body waveforms for binary neutron stars using surrogate models
Gravitational-wave observations of binary neutron star systems can provide
information about the masses, spins, and structure of neutron stars. However,
this requires accurate and computationally efficient waveform models that take
<1s to evaluate for use in Bayesian parameter estimation codes that perform
10^7 - 10^8 waveform evaluations. We present a surrogate model of a nonspinning
effective-one-body waveform model with l = 2, 3, and 4 tidal multipole moments
that reproduces waveforms of binary neutron star numerical simulations up to
merger. The surrogate is built from compact sets of effective-one-body waveform
amplitude and phase data that each form a reduced basis. We find that 12
amplitude and 7 phase basis elements are sufficient to reconstruct any binary
neutron star waveform with a starting frequency of 10Hz. The surrogate has
maximum errors of 3.8% in amplitude (0.04% excluding the last 100M before
merger) and 0.043 radians in phase. The version implemented in the LIGO
Algorithm Library takes ~0.07s to evaluate for a starting frequency of 30Hz and
~0.8s for a starting frequency of 10Hz, resulting in a speed-up factor of ~10^3
- 10^4 relative to the original Matlab code. This allows parameter estimation
codes to run in days to weeks rather than years, and we demonstrate this with a
Nested Sampling run that recovers the masses and tidal parameters of a

Excerpt: Representatives of the family Cercopidae are commonly known as spittlebugs because the nymphs cover themselves with saliva-like frothy masses composed of bubbles of air trapped by motions of the abdomen in fluids discharged from the alimentary canal. Spittle protects nymphs from desiccation, but they are able to abandon it for brief periods while migrating to new feeding sites or to other host plants where new masses are produced. Gas exchange by nymphs immersed in spittle is accomplished through spiraculae situated in a protective chamber formed on the ventral side of the abdomen by extended tergites
