An Experiment in Law Reform: Amchem Products v. Windsor
The Supreme Court\u27s 1997 decision in Amchem Products, Inc. v. Windsor struck down the most ambitious settlement class action ever attempted. The settlement was, however, the logical outgrowth of the federal judiciary\u27s efforts in the early 1990s to resolve a disaster of critical proportions. Many factors, not least the Supreme Court\u27s decision in Amchem, turned the tide against this trend. Ironically, however, the post-Amchem world has come to look a lot like Amchem. The settlement\u27s central feature-deferral of unimpaired claims to assure the availability of resources to compensate the sick-was subsequently incorporated (either by statute or through judicial decision) into the law of most states with heavy asbestos caseloads. Similarly, the bankruptcy of nearly all of the defendants whose cases would have been settled created a series of administrative claims-processing regimes similar to the Amchem settlement. This Article suggests that the Amchem settlement should be understood as a triumph of judicial statesmanship, and the reaction that took place in the late 1990s had tragic consequences. It also surveys what lessons we might learn from the Amchem experiment as we think about facilitating resolution of other mass torts in the future
Distillery
The goal for this project is to make a cost effective still. We will be implementing cost saving parts to create a cheap but effective still. From initial research conducted, we will try to combine a stainless steel still and copper still together so that the cheaper material (stainless steel) and the component that removes sulfur compounds (copper) are both implemented. The ME side of the project will focus on the actual design and construction of the parts that will be implemented into the still. Included in the design process will be calculations of heat transfer for the current and new materials inserted into the still ensuring that the heating element in the still will continue to raise the product to the correct temperature without impedance. Additionally, there will be a possibly of 3D modeling in Solidworks for the new parts created. The ChemE side of the project will be focused on optimizing the theoretical shape of the column to achieve the desired ethanol concentrations, measuring sulfur concentrations in the distillate (and other chemistry analyses as necessary) between the two columns, and delving into the fermentation process to have a consistent inlet formula
A Generalized Power System Architecture Sizing and Analysis Framework
The aeronautics industry has been challenged to increase efficiency, reduce noise and emissions, and decrease dependency on carbon-based fuels. To address these needs, NASA has identified and begun to pursue electrified aircraft as a possible solution. The power system for an electric aircraft can exist in many different forms, however; at the early design stage the engineer(s) must identify whether a hybrid- or turbo- electric solution may be best, whether the power transmission system is to be AC or DC, and to ultimately answer the question: does the electric solution provide a net system benefit compared to the fully mechanical solution? This paper describes a generalized power system architecture sizing and analysis framework to provide a mechanism to answering these questions, along with an example based on the STARC-ABL Architecture

Diamond nano-pillar arrays for quantum microscopy of neuronal signals
Modern neuroscience is currently limited in its capacity to perform long
term, wide-field measurements of neuron electromagnetics with nanoscale
resolution. Quantum microscopy using the nitrogen vacancy centre (NV) can
provide a potential solution to this problem with electric and magnetic field
sensing at nano-scale resolution and good biocompatibility. However, the
performance of existing NV sensing technology does not allow for studies of
small mammalian neurons yet. In this paper, we propose a solution to this
problem by engineering NV quantum sensors in diamond nanopillar arrays. The
pillars improve light collection efficiency by guiding excitation/emission
light, which improves sensitivity. More importantly, they also improve the size
of the signal at the NV by removing screening charges as well as coordinating
the neuron growth to the tips of the pillars where the NV is located. Here, we
provide a growth study to demonstrate coordinated neuron growth as well as the
first simulation of nano-scopic neuron electric and magnetic fields to assess
the enhancement provided by the nanopillar geometry.Comment: 18 pages including supplementary and references, 12 figure
Modulation of breast cancer cell viability by a cannabinoid receptor 2 agonist, JWH-015, is calcium dependent
Introduction: Cannabinoid compounds, both nonspecific as well as agonists selective for either cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) or cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), have been shown to modulate the tumor microenvironment by inducing apoptosis in tumor cells in several model systems. The mechanism of this modulation remains only partially delineated, and activity induced via the CB1 and CB2 receptors may be distinct despite significant sequence homology and structural similarity of ligands. Methods: The CB2-selective agonist JWH-015 was used to investigate mechanisms downstream of CB2 activation in mouse and human breast cancer cell lines in vitro and in a murine mammary tumor model. Results: JWH-015 treatment significantly reduced primary tumor burden and metastasis of luciferase-tagged murine mammary carcinoma 4T1 cells in immunocompetent mice in vivo. Furthermore, JWH-015 reduced the viability of murine 4T1 and human MCF7 mammary carcinoma cells in vitro by inducing apoptosis. JWH-015-mediated reduction of breast cancer cell viability was not dependent on G alpha(i) signaling in vitro or modified by classical pharmacological blockade of CB1, GPR55, TRPV1, or TRPA1 receptors. JWH-015 effects were calcium dependent and induced changes in MAPK/ERK signaling. Conclusion: The results of this work characterize the actions of a CB2-selective agonist on breast cancer cells in a syngeneic murine model representing how a clinical presentation of cancer progression and metastasis may be significantly modulated by a G-protein-coupled receptor. This item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries.
