Failure Analysis of a High-Pressure Natural Gas Heat Exchanger and its Modified Design
The beauty of numerical simulations is its ability to reveal the physics or nature of practical engineering problems in detail, and then, to identify adequate solutions. In this chapter, an excellent example is demonstrated. The rupture of a heavy-duty, high-pressure natural gas heat exchanger is numerically investigated, and the importance of gravity effect is identified, which is often considered as a trivial factor. For the original design, the natural convection in the flow field of the heat exchanger is comparable with the forced convection at the designed operating conditions. These two convections are perpendicular and compete with each other, the flow field is highly unsteady, and high-temperature natural gas is trapped in the upper portion of the vessel, which causes the damage of the exchanger. By vertically mounting the exchanger assembly and locating the outlet pipe on top of the exchanger, the flow parameters become rather uniform at each vertical cross section and the wall temperature of the heat exchanger remains more or less the same as the heated natural gas. An Optimal Operating Strategy for Battery Life Cycle Costs in Electric Vehicles
Impact on petroleum based vehicles on the environment, cost, and availability of fuel has led to an increased interest in electric vehicle as a means of transportation. Battery is a major component in an electric vehicle. Economic viability of these vehicles depends on the availability of cost-effective batteries. This paper presents a generalized formulation for determining the optimal operating strategy and cost optimization for battery. Assume that the deterioration of the battery is stochastic. Under the assumptions, the proposed operating strategy for battery is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem considering reliability and failure number. And an explicit expression of the average cost rate is derived for battery lifetime. Results show that the proposed operating strategy enhances the availability and reliability at a low cost
Conjugate Heat Transfer of an Internally Air-Cooled Nozzle Guide Vane and Shrouds
The accurate evaluation of the aero-thermodynamic working environments of gas turbine critical components is essential in the development of advanced gas turbine engines, such as cooling flow arrangement and service life assessment. In this chapter, as a technology demonstration, the conjugate heat transfers of the internally air-cooled nozzle guide vane (NGV) and shrouds of a gas turbine engine at flight conditions are numerically examined. The simulations are performed with a high-fidelity CFD model and adequately defined boundary conditions. The effect of the non-dimensional distance from wall surfaces, y+, on the wall temperature is studied. The characteristics of the complex three-dimensional flow and temperature fields are revealed, and the heat fluxes between the hot gas, NGV body, and cooling airflow at selected cross sections are presented and discussed. It is clear that the traditional one-dimensional semiempirical approach is no longer suitable. Generally, the Mach number is higher, and the temperature is lower on the NGV suction side than on the pressure side. It is found that two high-temperature zones occur on the NGV pressure side and the temperature over the middle section is relatively low. These findings are related to where the cooling holes and outlets are located and consistent with the field observation of NGV damages
Case report: a cataract induced by bleomycin in a patient with testicular cancer
BackgroundBleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic with outstanding anti-tumor effects. A major adverse effect of bleomycin is lung fibrosis. However, the development of cataracts as a severe adverse effect has not been reported.Case summaryHerein, we describe the first case of cataract induced by bleomycin therapy in a 22-year-old male with testicular cancer. After surgical intervention and following five successive chemotherapy cycles of the BEP regimen, including bleomycin, etoposide and cisplatin, the patient reported a gradual painless loss of vision, with substantial decline in visual ability, especially in the right eye. Following comprehensive eye examinations, a cataract was diagnosed. Eventually, the patient underwent phacoemulsification and received replacement of the intraocular lenses.ConclusionBleomycin can cause cataracts, which induces a significant loss of vision. Therefore, clinicians should observe early symptoms and properly adjust treatment to prevent aggravation of symptoms

Robustness of hypofractionated breast radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery with free breathing
PurposeThis study aimed to evaluate the robustness with respect to the positional variations of five planning strategies in free-breathing breast hypofractionated radiotherapy (HFRT) for patients after breast-conserving surgery.MethodsTwenty patients who received breast HFRT with 42.72 Gy in 16 fractions were retrospectively analyzed. Five treatment planning strategies were utilized for each patient, including 1) intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning (IMRTpure); 2) IMRT planning with skin flash tool extending and filling the fluence outside the skin by 2 cm (IMRTflash); 3) IMRT planning with planning target volume (PTV) extended outside the skin by 2 cm in the computed tomography dataset (IMRTePTV); 4) hybrid planning, i.e., 2 Gy/fraction three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy combined with 0.67 Gy/fraction IMRT (IMRThybrid); and 5) hybrid planning with skin flash (IMRThybrid-flash). All plans were normalized to 95% PTV receiving 100% of the prescription dose. Six additional plans were created with different isocenter shifts for each plan, which were 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 5 mm, 7 mm, and 10 mm distally in the X (left-right) and Y (anterior-posterior) directions, namely, (X,Y), to assess their robustness, and the corresponding doses were recalculated. Variation of dosimetric parameters with increasing isocenter shift was evaluated.ResultsAll plans were clinically acceptable. In terms of robustness to isocenter shifts, the five planning strategies followed the pattern IMRTePTV, IMRThybrid-flash, IMRTflash, IMRThybrid, and IMRTpure in descending order. V95% of IMRTePTV maintained at 99.6% ± 0.3% with a (5,5) shift, which further reduced to 98.2% ± 2.0% with a (10,10) shift. IMRThybrid-flash yielded the robustness second to IMRTePTV with less risk from dose hotspots, and the corresponding V95% maintained >95% up until (5,5).ConclusionConsidering the dosimetric distribution and robustness in breast radiotherapy, IMRTePTV performed best at maintaining high target coverage with increasing isocenter shift, while IMRThybrid-flash would be adequate with positional uncertainty<5 mm
