Background and objective Adenoid cystic carcinoma is primary bronchopulmonary carcinoma with low malignancy, and 43 patients treated in the past 50 years in our hospital were retrospectively studied. The aim of this study is to discuss the clinical symptoms, pathologic characteristic and therapeutic method of primary tracheal or bronchuotracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma. Methods This study summarized total 43 patients of primary tracheal or bronchus adenoid cystic carcinoma treated in our hospital from Jan. 1958 to Dec. 2007. Among them, 40 patients were treated by surgical resection, and 3 patients were treated by fiberoptic bronchoscope’s interventional treatment. Results The 1-yr, 3-yr, 5-yr survival rates of the 43 patients above were 100% (41/41), 89.5% (34/38), 87.1% (27/31), respectively. Conclusion Primary tracheal or bronchus adenoid cystic carcinoma are rare and low malignancy carcinoma. The clinical symptoms of them are not typical. The best treatment is early detection and taking measures of operation plus radiotherapy. The other palliative treatment is fiberoptic bronchoscope’s interventional treatment

Scale-Adaptive Group Optimization for Social Activity Planning

Studies have shown that each person is more inclined to enjoy a group activity when 1) she is interested in the activity, and 2) many friends with the same interest join it as well. Nevertheless, even with the interest and social tightness information available in online social networks, nowadays many social group activities still need to be coordinated manually. In this paper, therefore, we first formulate a new problem, named Participant Selection for Group Activity (PSGA), to decide the group size and select proper participants so that the sum of personal interests and social tightness of the participants in the group is maximized, while the activity cost is also carefully examined. To solve the problem, we design a new randomized algorithm, named Budget-Aware Randomized Group Selection (BARGS), to optimally allocate the computation budgets for effective selection of the group size and participants, and we prove that BARGS can acquire the solution with a guaranteed performance bound. The proposed algorithm was implemented in Facebook, and experimental results demonstrate that social groups generated by the proposed algorithm significantly outperform the baseline solutions.Comment: 20 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1305.150

Confirming the 115.5-day periodicity in the X-ray light curve of ULX NGC 5408 X-1

The Swift/XRT light curve of the ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source NGC 5408 X-1 was re-analyzed with two new numerical approaches, Weighted Wavelet ZZ-transform (WWZ) and CLEANest, that are different from previous studies. Both techniques detected a prominent periodicity with a time scale of 115.5±1.5115.5\pm1.5 days, in excellent agreement with the detection of the same periodicity first reported by Strohmayer (2009). Monte Carlo simulation was employed to test the statisiticak confidence of the 115.5-day periodicity, yielding a statistical significance of >99.98> 99.98% (or >3.8σ>3.8\sigma). The robust detection of the 115.5-day quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), if it is due to the orbital motion of the binary, would infer a mass of a few thousand M⊙M_\odot for the central black hole, implying an intermediate-mass black hole in NGC 5408 X-1.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics (RAA
