    Optical properties of Mn4+ ions in GaN:Mn codoped with Mg acceptors

    The optical properties of Mn-Mg codoped epitaxial GaN were studied. Addition of Mg acceptors quenches the weak manganese-related photoluminescence (PL) band at 1.3 eV in GaN:Mn and a series of sharp PL peaks are observed at 1 eV in codoped epilayers. The change in PL spectra indicates that Mg addition stabilizes the Mn4+ charge state by decreasing the Fermi level. The 1 eV PL peaks are tentatively attributed to intra center transitions involving Mn4+ ions. Spin allowed 3d-shell 4T2-4T1 transitions and their phonon replicas are involved. The relative intensities of the sharp peaks are strongly dependent on the excitation wavelength, indicating the optically active Mn4+ centers involved in the separate peaks are different. The temperature dependence of the PL spectrum suggests the presence of at least three distinct Mn4+ complex centers.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted by Appl. Phys. Let

    On computation of the first Baues--Wirsching cohomology of a freely-generated small category

    The Baues--Wirsching cohomology is one of the cohomologies of a small category. Our aim is to describe the first Baues--Wirsching cohomology of the small category generated by a finite quiver freely. We consider the case where the coefficient is a natural system obtained by the composition of a functor and the target functor. We give an algorithm to obtain generators of the vector space of inner derivations. It is known that there exists a surjection from the vector space of derivations of the small category to the first Baues--Wirsching cohomology whose kernel is the vector space of inner derivations.Comment: 11 page

    Birthrates and delay times of Type Ia supernovae

    Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play an important role in diverse areas of astrophysics, from the chemical evolution of galaxies to observational cosmology. However, the nature of the progenitors of SNe Ia is still unclear. In this paper, according to a detailed binary population synthesis study, we obtained SN Ia birthrates and delay times from different progenitor models, and compared them with observations. We find that the Galactic SN Ia birthrate from the double-degenerate (DD) model is close to those inferred from observations, while the birthrate from the single-degenerate (SD) model accounts for only about 1/2-2/3 of the observations. If a single starburst is assumed, the distribution of the delay times of SNe Ia from the SD model is a weak bimodality, where the WD + He channel contributes to the SNe Ia with delay times shorter than 100Myr, and the WD + MS and WD + RG channels to those with age longer than 1Gyr.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, accepted by Science in China Series G (Dec.30, 2009

    Zero-temperature criticality in the two-dimensional gauge glass model

    The zero-temperature critical state of the two-dimensional gauge glass model is investigated. It is found that low-energy vortex configurations afford a simple description in terms of gapless, weakly interacting vortex-antivortex pair excitations. A linear dielectric screening calculation is presented in a renormalization group setting that yields a power-law decay of spin-wave stiffness with distance. These properties are in agreement with low-temperature specific heat and spin-glass susceptibility data obtained in large-scale multi-canonical Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Korringa ratio of ferromagnetically correlated impure metals

    The Korringa ratio, K\cal K, obtained by taking an appropriate combination of the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time, is calculated at finite temperature, TT, in the three-dimensional electron gas model, including the electron-electron interaction, UU, and non-magnetic impurity scatterings. K\cal K varies in a simple way with respect to UU and TT; it decreases as UU is increased but increases as TT is raised. However, K\cal K varies in a slightly more complicated way with respect to the impurity scatterings; as the scattering rate is increased, K\cal K increases for small UU and low TT, but decreases for large UU or high TT regime. This calls for a more careful analysis when one attempts to estimate the Stoner factor from K\cal K.Comment: 7 pages including 3 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev. B, Dec.

    Edge of a Half-Filled Landau Level

    We have investigated the electron occupation number of the edge of a quantum Hall (QH) droplet at ν=1/2\nu=1/2 using exact diagonalization technique and composite fermion trial wavefunction. We find that the electron occupation numbers near the edge obey a scaling behavior. The scaling result indicates the existence of a well-defined edge corresponding to the radius of a compact droplet of uniform filling factor 1/2. We find that the occupation number beyond this edge point is substantial, which is qualitatively different from the case of odd-denominator QH states. We relate these features to the different ways in which composite fermions occupy Landau levels for odd and even denominator states.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.

    Transverse localization and slow propagation of light

    The effect of finite control beam on the transverse spatial profile of the slow light propagation in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium is studied. We arrive at a general criterion in terms of eigenequation, and demonstrate the existence of a set of localized, stationary transverse modes for the negative detuning of the probe signal field. Each of these diffraction-free transverse modes has its own characteristic group velocity, smaller than the conventional theoretical result without considering the transverse spatial effect
