Elastic wave velocities of Apollo 12 rocks at high pressures
New results of P- and S-wave velocity measurements on two Apollo 12 rocks, 12052 and 12065, under pressures up to 10 kbars are presented. These rocks are basalt-like crystalline rocks with a bulk density of about 3.26 g/cm^3 and a mean atomic weight of 24.5. Like the Apollo 11 rocks, the velocities and the wave transmission efficiency are surprisingly low at low pressures despite their
relatively tight texture; at pressures below 200 bars, Q is estimated to be less than 100. The velocities increase very rapidly with pressure and approach 7.0 km/sec (P wave) and 3.9 km/sec (S wave) towards 10 kbars. No evidence is found for an increase of Q at 1 MHz with a reduction of the ambient pressure to 3 x 10^(-3) torr
Berry's phase in the multimode Peierls states
It is shown that Berry's phase associated with the adiabatic change of local
variables in the Hamiltonian can be used to characterize the multimode Peierls
state, which has been proposed as a new type of the ground state of the
two-dimensional(2D) systems with the electron-lattice interaction.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure

Multi-Modes Phonon Softening in Two-Dimensional Electron-Lattice System
Phonon dispersion in a two-dimensional electron-lattice system described by a
two-dimensional square-lattice version of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger's model and
having the half-filled electronic band is studied theoretically at temperatures
higher than the mean field critical temperature of the Peierls transition. When
the temperature is lowered from the higher region down to the critical one,
softening of multi phonon modes which have wave vectors equal to the nesting
vector \vv{Q}=(\pi/a,\pi/a) with the lattice constant or parallel to
\vv{Q} is observed. Although both of the transverse and longitudinal modes
are softened at the critical temperature in the case of the wave vector equal
to \vv{Q}, only the transverse modes are softened for other wave vectors
parallel to \vv{Q}. This behavior is consistent with the Peierls distortions
at lower temperatures.Comment: 10 pages, 5 Figure

Oxidation of an Oligonucleotide-Bound Ce-III/Multiphosphonate Complex for Site-Selective DNA Scission
Oligodeoxyribonucleotide conjugates of ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(methylenephosphonic acid) (EDTP) have been used to place a Ce-III/EDTP complex in close proximity to predetermined phosphodiester linkages of a complementary target oligonucleotide. In the presence of atmospheric oxygen, the Ce-III is oxidized into Ce-IV which, in turn, efficiently cleaves the target phosphodiester linkage. No cleavage occurs at the other single-stranded regions, which suggests that the catalytic Ce species is strictly localized next to the target phosphodiester linkage. No decrease in the reaction rate is observed upon introduction of scavengers for hydroxyl radicals (such as DMSO or MeOH) or singlet oxygen (such as NaN3) to the system; this indicates that the reaction proceeds via a hydrolytic pathway. Any significant contribution by an oxidative pathway is further ruled out by the observation that nucleosides remain intact after incubation with Ce-IV/EDTP complex for extended periods

Synchronized pulse control of decoherence
We present a new strategy for multipulse control over decoherence. When a
two-level system interacts with a reservoir characterized by a specific
frequency, we find that the decoherence is effectively suppressed by
synchronizing the pulse-train application with the dynamical motion of the
reservoir.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
