    Chromo-dynamic multi-component lattice Boltzmann equation scheme for axial symmetry

    We validate the chromo-dynamic multi-component lattice Boltzmann equation (MCLBE) simulation for immiscible fluids with a density contrast against analytical results for complex flow geometries, with particular emphasis on the fundamentals of the method, i.e. compliance with inter-facial boundary conditions of continuum hydrodynamics. To achieve the necessary regimes for the chosen validations, we develop, from a three-dimensional, axially-symmetric flow formulation, a novel, two-dimensional, pseudo Cartesian, MCLBE scheme. This requires the inclusion in lattice Boltzmann methodology of a continuously distributed source and a velocity-dependent force density (here, the metric force terms of the cylindrical Navier–Stokes equations). Specifically, we apply our model to the problem of flow past a spherical liquid drop in Re = 0, Ca regime and, also, flow past a lightly deformed drop. The resulting simulation data, once corrected for the simulation’s inter-facial micro-current (using a method we also advance herein, based on freezing the phase field) show good agreement with theory over a small range of density contrasts. In particular, our data extend verified compliance with the kinematic condition from flat (Burgin et al 2019 Phys. Rev. E 100 043310) to the case of curved fluid–fluid interfaces.     Listening to galaxies tuning at z ~ 2.5 - 3.0: The first strikes of the Hubble fork

    We investigate the morphological properties of 494 galaxies selected from the GMASS survey at z>1, primarily in their optical rest frame, using HST images, from the CANDELS survey. We propose that the Hubble sequence of galaxy morphologies takes shape at redshift 2.5<z<3. The fractions of both ellipticals and disks decrease with increasing lookback time at z>1, such that at redshifts z=2.5-2.7 and above, the Hubble types cannot be identified, and most galaxies are classified as irregular. The quantitative morphological analysis shows that, at 1<z<3, morphological parameters are not as effective in distinguishing the different morphological Hubble types as they are at low redshift. No significant morphological k-correction was found to be required for the Hubble type classification, with some exceptions. In general, different morphological types occupy the two peaks of the rest-frame (U-B) colour bimodality of galaxies: most irregulars occupy the blue peak, while ellipticals are mainly found in the red peak, though with some level of contamination. Disks are more evenly distributed than either irregulars and ellipticals. We find that the position of a galaxy in a UVJ diagram is related to its morphological type: the "quiescent" region of the plot is mainly occupied by ellipticals and, to a lesser extent, by disks. We find that only ~33% of all morphological ellipticals in our sample are red and passively evolving galaxies. Blue galaxies morphologically classified as ellipticals show a remarkable structural similarity to red ones. Almost all irregulars have a star-forming galaxy spectrum. In addition, the majority of disks show some sign of star-formation activity in their spectra, though in some cases their red continuum is indicative of old stellar populations.     Application of point-process system identification techniques to complex physiological systems

    This thesis is concerned with the application of system identification techniques to the analysis of complex physiological systems. The techniques are applied to neuronal spike-train data obtained from elements of the neuromuscular system. A brief description of the neuromuscular system is given in chapter 1, along with a more detailed discussion of the muscle spindle, which is the component of the neuromuscular system which this study deals with. In addition, some possibilities for system identification studies of the muscle spindle are discussed. The identification procedure is based on statistical methods for the treatment of point-process data. The point-process representation of a spike-train is introduced in chapter 2 with definitions of time and frequency domain point-process parameters. Estimates for these parameters are given, along with expressions for their asymptotic distributions. The linear point-process system identification model is introduced and estimates are described for the model parameters in terms of the previously defined point-process parameters. These point-process and linear parameter estimates are applied to muscle spindle spike-train data. In the analysis of a single spike-train certain important features only show up in the frequency domain, and for input and output spike-trains a linear transfer function type description is constructed in the frequency domain. The mathematical model of this transfer function is used as the basis for an analogue computer simulation of a subsystem of the muscle spindle. This consists of a linear first order filter followed by an encoder which generates output spikes. Data logged from the simulation is processed in the same manner as experimental data, and the effect of varying the simulation parameters on the linear model estimates is looked at. It is shown that in general the linear model description reflects the properties of the linear filter in the simulation, and varying the simulation parameters can be used to accurately match results from simulated data with those obtained from real data. Chapter 3 compares the point-process approach with a more conventional filtering and sampled data approach to estimate power spectra. The filtering of spike-trains with broad band spectra is investigated, and this shows up a pitfall in the choice of filter cut-off frequency. It is concluded that the point-process approach is preferable due to shorter computational times, and the well documented statistical propeties of the point-process estimates. The application of the point-process techniques described in chapter 2 to the analysis of more general spike-train data is considered in chapter 4. Three techniques for measuring the degree of coupling between two spike-trains are compared, and the point-process frequency domain measure is found to be the most sensitive. This measure is also applied to a data set containing a strong single periodicity, and the ability to detect coupling at a single harmonic is demonstrated. The analysis of coupling between spike-trains in the frequency domain is extended to deal with multiple spike-trains, and the ability to distinguish genuine coupling from the effect of a common input is shown to be a powerful tool which can be used to investigate communications pathways in neural systems. Finally, one special feature of the muscle spindle response to a spike-train input is analysed using the simulation. It is demonstrated that the point-process approach can produce results about a particular phenomenon from a single experiment much more rapidly than using a repetitive trial and error approach. Chapter 5 considers the extension of the linear point-process identification model introduced in chapter 2. Higher order time and frequency domain point-process parameters are defined and estimates given. In the time domain, a new technique for rapidly generating higher order time domain parameters is developed. The quadratic point-process model is introduced and solutions for its parameters given. This report summarises the findings from the second phase of fieldwork with regional and sub-regional Improvement Partnerships, established to facilitate capacity building and improvement activity in local authorities. The research underpinning this report was undertaken in seven case study Improvement Partnerships (see Section 2) in October and November 2006 and follows a similar – baseline – exercise undertaken during the same period during 2005.     This report is one of a series of outputs from the National Evaluation of the Capacity Building Programme for local government in England (CBP), undertaken by a team of researchers at the Policy Research Institute (PRI) at Leeds Metropolitan University and the Cities Research Unit at the University of West of England. This report summarises the findings from all four key strands of the evaluation. Because of the difficulties associated with quantifying the capacity of local authorities, much less the sector, in relation to the dynamic roles and objectives that they pursue, the report focuses on what has worked, why and in what circumstances, rather than providing a definitive assessment of the extent of change of capacity building enabled by the CBP. The CBP was launched in 2003 as a joint Department for Communities and Local Government/Local Government Association (LGA) initiative to support capacity building and improvement activities within local authorities in England. The CBP has supported four main streams of improvement and capacity building activity in local authorities (see Section 1.2; p13)

It is intended that the ongoing evaluation of the Capacity Building Programme will be formative and assist in the development of the programme over time. In what follows the background to the pilots programme is discussed, highlighting the kinds of capacity building activities the pilots are engaged with and the link between the Capacity Building Programme and the CPA. The report outlines the structure and purpose of the pilots programme and the nature and characteristics of the different pilots that were undertaken. The seven case studies are then discussed in more detail in the main body of 1 Introduction | 5 the report. These are drawn together in key themes and findings which can be used to strengthen future project development

    Single-trial multiwavelet coherence in application to neurophysiological time series

    A method of single-trial coherence analysis is presented, through the application of continuous muldwavelets. Multiwavelets allow the construction of spectra and bivariate statistics such as coherence within single trials. Spectral estimates are made consistent through optimal time-frequency localization and smoothing. The use of multiwavelets is considered along with an alternative single-trial method prevalent in the literature, with the focus being on statistical, interpretive and computational aspects. The multiwavelet approach is shown to possess many desirable properties, including optimal conditioning, statistical descriptions and computational efficiency. The methods. are then applied to bivariate surrogate and neurophysiological data for calibration and comparative study.
