Photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence in poly(2,5-dimethoxy-p- phenylene vinylene)
We report a study of the photoexcited states in the conjugated polymer poly(2,5-dimethoxy-p-phenylene vinylene). Photoluminescence due to radiative recombination of singlet excitons is observed at energiesjust below the onset of the pi-pi* absorption band at 2.1 eV. Photoinduced absorption at 80 K shows bands peaking at 0.68, 1.35, and 1.80 eV. The features at 0.68 and 1.8 eV are associated with the same excited state which we propose is a doubly charged bipolaron, while the third at 1.35 eV is unrelated. We assign this 1.35-eV absorption to a triplet-triplet transition of a triplet exciton. The bipolarons are long lived with significant numbers surviving in excess of 100 ms at 80 K, and have a weak temperature dependence such that photoinduced absorption is readily detectable even at room temperature. The triplet exciton has a lifetime of order 2.5 ms at 80 K but this falls rapidly at higher temperature and the response is not detected at room temperature. We contrast these results with those obtained previously for the related poly(arylene vinylene) polymers poly(p-phenylene vinylene), and poly(2,5-thienylene vinylene) and for other conjugated polymers, and draw attention to the important role played in the photophysics of these materials by neutral excited states
Non-Ground-State Bose-Einstein Condensates of Trapped Atoms
The possibility of creating a Bose condensate of trapped atoms in a
non-ground state is suggested. Such a nonequilibrium Bose condensate can be
formed if one, first, obtains the conventional Bose condensate in the ground
state and then transfers the condensed atoms to a non-ground state by means of
a resonance pumping. The properties of ground and non-ground states are
compared and plausible applications of such nonequilibrium condensates are

MRI measurements of vessel calibre in tumour xenografts: comparison with vascular corrosion casting.
Vessel size index (R(v), Îźm) has been proposed as a quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) derived imaging biomarker in oncology, for the non-invasive assessment of tumour blood vessel architecture and vascular targeted therapies. Appropriate pre-clinical evaluation of R(v) in animal tumour models will improve the interpretation and guide the introduction of the biomarker into clinical studies. The objective of this study was to compare R(v) measured in vivo with vessel size measurements from high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (ÎźCT) of vascular corrosion casts measured post mortem from the same tumours, with and without vascular targeted therapy. MRI measurements were first acquired from subcutaneous SW1222 colorectal xenografts in mice following treatment with 0 (n=6), 30 (n=6) or 200 mg/kg (n=3) of the vascular disrupting agent ZD6126. The mice were then immediately infused with a low viscosity resin and, following polymerisation and maceration of surrounding tissues, the resulting tumour vascular casts were dissected and subsequently imaged using an optimised ÎźCT imaging approach. Vessel diameters were not measurable by ÎźCT in the 200 mg/kg group as the high dose of ZD6126 precluded delivery of the resin to the tumour vascular bed. The mean R(v) for the three treatment groups was 24, 23 and 23.5 Îźm respectively; the corresponding ÎźCT measurements from corrosion casts from the 0 and 30 mg/kg cohorts were 25 and 28 Îźm. The strong association between the in vivo MRI and post mortem ÎźCT values supports the use of R(v) as an imaging biomarker in clinical trials of investigational vascular targeted therapies
Globalization, democratization, and the Arab uprising : the international factor in MENA's failed democratization
What explains the almost negative impact of international factors on post-Uprising democratization prospects? This article compares the utility of rival âdiffusionistâ and neo-Gramscian political economy frames to explain this. Three international factors deter democratization. The failure of Western democracy promotion is rooted in the contradiction between the dominance of global finance capital and the norm of democratic equality; in the periphery, neo-liberalism is most compatible with hybrid regimes and, at best, âlow intensity democracy.â In MENA, neo-liberalism generated a crony capitalism incompatible with democratization; while this also sparked the uprisings, these have failed to address class inequalities. Moreover at the normative level, MENA hosts the most credible counter-hegemonic ideologies; the brief peaking of democratic ideology in the region during the early uprisings soon declined amidst regional discourse wars. Non-democratsâcoercive regime remnants and radical charismatic movements--were empowered by the competitive interference of rival powers in Uprising states. The collapse of many Uprising states amidst a struggle for power over the region left an environment uncongenial to democratization.PostprintPeer reviewe
The apparent British sea slope is caused by systematic errors in the levelling-based vertical datum
The spirit-levellingâbased British vertical datum (Ordnance Datum Newlyn) implies a southânorth apparent slope in mean sea level of up to 53âmm degâ1 latitude, due to the datum falling on heading northwards. Although this apparent slope has been investigated since the 1960s, explanations of its origin have remained inconclusive. It has also been suggested that, rather than a slope, the British vertical datum includes a step of about 240âmm affecting all sites north of about 53°N. In either case, the British vertical datum may be of limited use for any study requiring accurate heights or changes in heights, such as testing geoid models, groundwater and hydrocarbon extraction, the calibration and validation of satellite-based digital terrain models, and the unification of vertical datums internationally. Within the last decade, however, based on an apparent reduction in the slope to only â12âmm degâ1 latitude with respect to recent geoid models, it has been claimed that the British vertical datum does provide a physically meaningful surface for use in scientific applications.In this paper, we reinvestigate the presence of apparent southânorth sea slopes around Britain and reported slopes in the vertical datum, using the EGM2008 global gravitational model, together with mean sea level and GPS data from British tide gauges, GPS ellipsoidal heights of 178 fundamental benchmarks across mainland Britain, and vertical deflection observations at 192 stations. We demonstrate a southânorth slope in the British vertical datum of â(20â25)âmm degâ1 latitude with respect to both mean sea level (corrected for the ocean's mean dynamic topography and the inverse barometer response to atmospheric pressure loading) and the EGM2008 quasigeoid model, while EGM2008 is shown to exhibit a negligible slope of (2 Âą 4)âmm degâ1 with respect to mean sea level. It is clear, therefore, that the slope can only arise from systematic errors in the levelling, although we are unable to isolate their exact origin. Using an offset detection method based on a penalized likelihood maximization using the Schwarz Information Criterion, we do not detect a step in the vertical datum affecting all sites north of 53°N, but do identify regional distortions that we attribute to the inhomogeneity in both the levelling data used and the least squares adjustment procedures used to realize the datum. We conclude that the British vertical datum remains unsuitable for scientific purposes
