Lattice isomorphisms of bisimple monogenic orthodox semigroups
Using the classification and description of the structure of bisimple
monogenic orthodox semigroups obtained in \cite{key10}, we prove that every
bisimple orthodox semigroup generated by a pair of mutually inverse elements of
infinite order is strongly determined by the lattice of its subsemigroups in
the class of all semigroups. This theorem substantially extends an earlier
result of \cite{key25} stating that the bicyclic semigroup is strongly lattice
determined.Comment: Semigroup Forum (published online: 15 April 2011
The Minimal Supersymmetric Fat Higgs Model
We present a calculable supersymmetric theory of a composite ``fat'' Higgs
boson. Electroweak symmetry is broken dynamically through a new gauge
interaction that becomes strong at an intermediate scale. The Higgs mass can
easily be 200-450 GeV along with the superpartner masses, solving the
supersymmetric little hierarchy problem. We explicitly verify that the model is
consistent with precision electroweak data without fine-tuning. Gauge coupling
unification can be maintained despite the inherently strong dynamics involved
in electroweak symmetry breaking. Supersymmetrizing the Standard Model
therefore does not imply a light Higgs mass, contrary to the lore in the
literature. The Higgs sector of the minimal Fat Higgs model has a mass spectrum
that is distinctly different from the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, REVTe
Fast phonetic similarity search over large repositories
Analysis of unstructured data may be inefficient in the presence of spelling errors. Existing approaches use string similarity methods to search for valid words within a text, with a supporting dictionary. However, they are not rich enough to encode phonetic information to assist the search. In this paper, we present a novel approach for efficiently perform phonetic similarity search over large data sources, that uses a data structure called PhoneticMap to encode language-specific phonetic information. We validate our approach through an experiment over a data set using a Portuguese variant of a well-known repository, to automatically correct words with spelling errors
Straight Line Orbits in Hamiltonian Flows
We investigate periodic straight-line orbits (SLO) in Hamiltonian force
fields using both direct and inverse methods. A general theorem is proven for
natural Hamiltonians quadratic in the momenta in arbitrary dimension and
specialized to two and three dimension. Next we specialize to homogeneous
potentials and their superpositions, including the familiar H\'enon-Heiles
problem. It is shown that SLO's can exist for arbitrary finite superpositions
of -forms. The results are applied to a family of generalized H\'enon-Heiles
potentials having discrete rotational symmetry. SLO's are also found for
superpositions of these potentials.Comment: laTeX with 6 figure
Rotating Resonator-Oscillator Experiments to Test Lorentz Invariance in Electrodynamics
In this work we outline the two most commonly used test theories (RMS and
SME) for testing Local Lorentz Invariance (LLI) of the photon. Then we develop
the general framework of applying these test theories to resonator experiments
with an emphasis on rotating experiments in the laboratory. We compare the
inherent sensitivity factors of common experiments and propose some new
configurations. Finally we apply the test theories to the rotating cryogenic
experiment at the University of Western Australia, which recently set new
limits in both the RMS and SME frameworks [hep-ph/0506074].Comment: Submitted to Lecture Notes in Physics, 36 pages, minor modifications,

Loop-Generated Bounds on Changes to the Graviton Dispersion Relation
We identify the effective theory appropriate to the propagation of massless
bulk fields in brane-world scenarios, to show that the dominant low-energy
effect of asymmetric warping in the bulk is to modify the dispersion relation
of the effective 4-dimensional modes. We show how such changes to the graviton
dispersion relation may be bounded through the effects they imply, through
loops, for the propagation of standard model particles. We compute these bounds
and show that they provide, in some cases, the strongest constraints on
nonstandard gravitational dispersions. The bounds obtained in this way are the
strongest for the fewest extra dimensions and when the extra-dimensional Planck
mass is the smallest. Although the best bounds come for warped 5-D scenarios,
for which the 5D Planck Mass is O(TeV), even in 4 dimensions the graviton loop
can lead to a bound on the graviton speed which is comparable with other
constraints.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures, uses revte
Standard Model baryogenesis through four-fermion operators in braneworlds
We study a new baryogenesis scenario in a class of braneworld models with low
fundamental scale, which typically have difficulty with baryogenesis. The
scenario is characterized by its minimal nature: the field content is that of
the Standard Model and all interactions consistent with the gauge symmetry are
admitted. Baryon number is violated via a dimension-6 proton decay operator,
suppressed today by the mechanism of quark-lepton separation in extra
dimensions; we assume that this operator was unsuppressed in the early Universe
due to a time-dependent quark-lepton separation. The source of CP violation is
the CKM matrix, in combination with the dimension-6 operators. We find that
almost independently of cosmology, sufficient baryogenesis is nearly impossible
in such a scenario if the fundamental scale is above 100 TeV, as required by an
unsuppressed neutron-antineutron oscillation operator. The only exception
producing sufficient baryon asymmetry is a scenario involving
out-of-equilibrium c quarks interacting with equilibrium b quarks.Comment: 39 pages, 5 figures v2: typos, presentational changes, references and

Black Holes and Instabilities of Negative Tension Branes
We consider the collision in 2+1 dimensions of a black hole and a negative
tension brane on an orbifold. Because there is no gravitational radiation in
2+1 dimensions, the horizon area shrinks when part of the brane falls through.
This provides a potential violation of the generalized second law of
thermodynamics. However, tracing the details of the dynamical evolution one
finds that it does not proceed from equilibrium configuration to equilibrium
configuration. Instead, a catastrophic space-time singularity develops similar
to the `big crunch' of FRW space-times. In the context of classical
general relativity, our result demonstrates a new instability of constructions
with negative tension branes.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, uses RevTeX. Minor typos fixed. References and

Minimal Composite Higgs Model with Light Bosons
We analyze a composite Higgs model with the minimal content that allows a
light Standard-Model-like Higgs boson, potentially just above the current LEP
limit. The Higgs boson is a bound state made up of the top quark and a heavy
vector-like quark. The model predicts that only one other bound state may be
lighter than the electroweak scale, namely a CP-odd neutral scalar. Several
other composite scalars are expected to have masses in the TeV range. If the
Higgs decay into a pair of CP-odd scalars is kinematically open, then this
decay mode is dominant, with important implications for Higgs searches. The
lower bound on the CP-odd scalar mass is loose, in some cases as low as
100 MeV, being set only by astrophysical constraints.Comment: 33 pages, latex. Corrections in eqs. 3.21, 3.23, 4.1, 4.5-10. One
