Power-law weighted networks from local attachments
This letter introduces a mechanism for constructing, through a process of
distributed decision-making, substrates for the study of collective dynamics on
extended power-law weighted networks with both a desired scaling exponent and a
fixed clustering coefficient. The analytical results show that the connectivity
distribution converges to the scaling behavior often found in social and
engineering systems. To illustrate the approach of the proposed framework we
generate network substrates that resemble steady state properties of the
empirical citation distributions of (i) publications indexed by the Institute
for Scientific Information from 1981 to 1997; (ii) patents granted by the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office from 1975 to 1999; and (iii) opinions written by

International patent families: from application strategies to statistical indicators
This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the characteristics of international patent families, including their domestic component. We exploit a relatively under-studied feature of patent families, namely the number of patents covering the same invention within a given jurisdiction. Using this information, we highlight common patterns in the structure of international patent families, which reflect both the patenting strategies of innovators and the peculiarities of the different patent systems. While the literature has extensively used family size, i.e. the number of countries in which a given invention is protected, as a measure of patent value, our results suggest that the number of patent filings in the priority country within a patent family as well as the timespan between the first and last fillings within a family are other insightful indicators of the value of patented innovations
Mind the gap: Balancing alliance network and technology portfolios during periods of technological uncertainty
While clique-embeddedness is generally considered to enhance firm performance, there are also reasons to expect that under conditions of technological turbulence clique-membership is less beneficial or might even become a liability. To address this, we study the innovative performance of clique members during periods of both technological change and technological stability. We find support for the idea that companies’ ability to adapt their alliance network (i.e. forming ties beyond the scope of the clique) and their ability to adapt their technology portfolios (i.e. access to novel technological knowledge) positively influences their innovative performance during technologically turbulent periods
