    Dwell Sensitivity Fatigue Behaviour of High Temperature Materials

    The dwell sensitivity fatigue behavior of six high temperature materials is examined in this paper: two stainless steels, 304L and 304, two tantalum alloys, Τ- Ι 11 and ASTAR 811C, pure nickel Ni 201 and a single crystal nickel-base superalloy, PWA 1480. The stainless steel alloys were found to be tensile dwell sensitive; however, a saturation in dwell sensitivity was found with the increase in strain range for all materials examined. At lower strain ranges the dwell cycles were producing lower lives than at higher strains, as found in the case of AISI SS 304 and two tantalum based alloys, T-lll and ASTAR 811C. Trends in various normalized life curves were found to be strain dependent for ASTAR 811C, in which below 0.2% inelastic strain range, dwell effects were more deleterious than above it.     Spin Foam Models of Riemannian Quantum Gravity

    Using numerical calculations, we compare three versions of the Barrett-Crane model of 4-dimensional Riemannian quantum gravity. In the version with face and edge amplitudes as described by De Pietri, Freidel, Krasnov, and Rovelli, we show the partition function diverges very rapidly for many triangulated 4-manifolds. In the version with modified face and edge amplitudes due to Perez and Rovelli, we show the partition function converges so rapidly that the sum is dominated by spin foams where all the spins labelling faces are zero except for small, widely separated islands of higher spin. We also describe a new version which appears to have a convergent partition function without drastic spin-zero dominance. Finally, after a general discussion of how to extract physics from spin foam models, we discuss the implications of convergence or divergence of the partition function for other aspects of a spin foam model.Comment: 23 pages LaTeX; this version to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravit

    The evolution of irradiance detection: melanopsin and the non-visual opsins

    Circadian rhythms are endogenous 24 h cycles that persist in the absence of external time cues. These rhythms provide an internal representation of day length and optimize physiology and behaviour to the varying demands of the solar cycle. These clocks require daily adjustment to local time and the primary time cue (zeitgeber) used by most vertebrates is the daily change in the amount of environmental light (irradiance) at dawn and dusk, a process termed photoentrainment. Attempts to understand the photoreceptor mechanisms mediating non-image-forming responses to light, such as photoentrainment, have resulted in the discovery of a remarkable array of different photoreceptors and photopigment families, all of which appear to use a basic opsin/vitamin A-based photopigment biochemistry. In non-mammalian vertebrates, specialized photoreceptors are located within the pineal complex, deep brain and dermal melanophores. There is also strong evidence in fish and amphibians for the direct photic regulation of circadian clocks in multiple tissues. By contrast, mammals possess only ocular photoreceptors. However, in addition to the image-forming rods and cones of the retina, there exists a third photoreceptor system based on a subset of melanopsin-expressing photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (pRGCs). In this review, we discuss the range of vertebrate photoreceptors and their opsin photopigments, describe the melanopsin/pRGC system in some detail and then finally consider the molecular evolution and sensory ecology of these non-image-forming photoreceptor systems

Particular reference is given to the shifting of attention from step-by-step procedures that are performed in time, to symbolism that can be manipulated as mental entities on paper and in the mind. The development is analysed using different theoretical perspectives, including the SOLO model and various theories of concept construction to reveal a fundamental cycle underlying the building of concepts that features widely in different ways of thinking that occurs throughout mathematical learning

    Thin Domain Walls in Lyra Geometry

    This paper studies thin domain walls within the frame work of Lyra Geometry. We have considered two models. First one is the thin domain wall with negligible pressures perpendicular and transverse direction to the wall and secondly, we take a particular type of thin domain wall where the pressure in the perpendicular direction is negligible but transverse pressures are existed.     CDX2 mutations do not account for juvenile polyposis or Peutz–Jeghers syndrome and occur infrequently in sporadic colorectal cancers

    Peutz–Jeghers syndrome (PJS) and juvenile polyposis (JPS) are both characterized by the presence of hamartomatous polyps and increased risk of malignancy in the gastrointestinal tract. Mutations of the LKB1 and SMAD4 genes have been shown recently to cause a number of PJS and JPS cases respectively, but there remains considerable uncharacterized genetic heterogeneity in these syndromes, particularly JPS. The mouse homologue of CDX2 has been shown to give rise to a phenotype which includes hamartomatous-like polyps in the colon and is therefore a good candidate for JPS and PJS cases which are not accounted for by the SMAD4 and LKB1 genes. By analogy with SMAD4CDX2 is also a candidate for somatic mutation in sporadic colorectal cancer. We have screened 37 JPS families/cases without known SMAD4 mutations, 10 Peutz-Jeghers cases without known LKB1 mutations and 49 sporadic colorectal cancers for mutations in CDX2. Although polymorphic variants and rare variants of unlikely significance were detected, no pathogenic CDX2 mutations were found in any case of JPS or PJS, or in any of the sporadic cancers. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign www.bjcancer.co
