This study aimed to determine the frequency of antibodies to Neospora caninum in domestic sheep raised in Henan province, central China. Serum samples from 779 domestic sheep were collected from March 2015 to May 2016, and antibodies to N. caninum were evaluated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed an overall IgG positive rate of 7.32% (57/779). The risk factors significantly related to seropositivity to N. caninum in sheep were the age, the presence of dogs, and the rearing system. This is the first report of N. caninum infection and associated risk factors in domestic sheep in central China

A User-Friendly Method for Synthesizing High-Quality NaYF

Application of “green chemistry” concept to synthesize nanomaterials is the current goal in developing new techniques for producing materials in commercial scale. In this study, we reported a low-cost and convenient method for synthesizing high-quality NaYF4:Yb,Er(Tm) nanocrystals (NCs) in liquid paraffin. Experimental results indicated that the as-prepared NCs possessed pure β-phase structure, narrow size distribution, as well as strong up-conversion fluorescence. By varying the doped lanthanides, Er or Tm, the emission color of up-conversion fluorescence was tunable. In comparison to other high-boiling-point organic solvents, liquid paraffin is cheaper and prolific in oil industry. Besides, 280∘C was the optimal temperature for NaYF4:Yb,Er(Tm) synthesis, which was lower than that in the previous reports using other high-boiling-point organic solvents. Accordingly, this user-friendly method will facilitate the synthesis of high-quality lanthanide-doped NaYF4 NCs in commercial scale

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite with global distribution. However, data on T. gondii infection among children in primary school in Henan province, central China were lacking. In this study, 2451 serum samples of primary school children in this province were collected from September 2015 to October 2018 and evaluated for T. gondii antibodies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall seroprevalence was 9.51% (233/2451), of which 7.59% (186/2451) showed IgG positivity, 0.73% (18/2451) IgM and 1.18% (29/2451) both. The main risk factors related to T. gondii infections were the age of children, residence area, contact with cats, and exposure to soil. Moreover, hand washing before eating was considered a protective factor. Seroprevalence of T. gondii infection among the study population was common, emphasizing the need to prevent and control this infection. Toxocariasis is a zoonotic disease that poses a threat to public health worldwide. In the present study, we investigated the seroprevalence of Toxocara infection among primary school children in Henan province, central China, which was previously unknown. Sera from 2451 primary school children were collected from September 2015 to October 2018, and evaluated for anti-Toxocara antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall seroprevalence of Toxocara infection was 5.14% (126/2451). The main risk factors related to Toxocara infection identified in this study were the age of children, residence area of children, contact with cats or dogs, and exposure to soil. Hand washing before eating was considered to be a protective factor. These findings demonstrate that Toxocara infection is relatively common among primary school children in Henan province
