    The role of innovations in secondary school performance - Evidence from a conditional efficiency model

    This paper studies the influence of educational innovations on school performance. We apply a tailored, fully nonparametric conditional efficiency model to study secondary school efficiency in the netherlands. The application uses official school data and a self-collected questionnaire on recent innovations in schools. In the nonparametric model, it is assumed that schools aim to maximize educational attainments of students under a budget constraint. The results suggest that innovations are positively related to efficiency. We find that profiling, pedagogic, process and education chain innovations are significantly related to school efficiency, whereas innovations in the professionalization of teachers are insignificantly related to school efficiency. Furthermore, the number of locations per school and the number of schools per governing body are negatively and significantly related to school efficiency. School type and region significantly influence school efficiency, whereas share of disadvantaged students, degree of urbanization and student/teacher ratio do not have significant influence

    Does residential mobility improve educational outcomes? Evidence from the Netherlands

    This paper explores the impact of residential mobility on educational outcomes. By considering a large dutch city with substantial internal residential mobility, we examine how residential mobility influences the decision of students to drop out of school. The paper exploits a rich administrative dataset with extensive information on educational, individual, family, housing and moving characteristics of students. It combines a matching design with a multivariate regression analysis, such that the evaluation draws on a well-comparable control group for the treated students. Accounting for individual, family, educational, neighborhood and housing characteristics, as well as for school and year fixed effects, we observe that residential mobility increases the probability of school dropout in the first few years after moving. The estimated effect changes, however, to a lower risk of early school leaving after an initial period, and then changes again to a higher risk after 6 years. This effect remains, regardless the level of education the students attended, or whether the student moves to a better or a worse neighborhood

    Het betreft een onderzoek in opdracht van de VO-raad naar innovaties in het voortgezet onderwijs en de verspreiding en determinanten van deze innovaties. Op basis van interviews, een vragenlijst en een economisch model schetsen wij een beeld van innovaties op scholen. In het rapport gaan we in op de definitie van het begrip innovatie en benoemen we de innovaties die zijn toegepast in het voortgezet onderwijs in de afgelopen jaren. Verder kijken we naar de verspreiding van innovaties en onderzoeken we het effect van potentiële determinanten op de verspreiding van innovaties. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat schaal (schoolgrootte, aantal vestigingen en de grootte van het bestuur) een belangrijke determinant is van innovaties. Ook concurrentie, type onderwijs, het onderwijsbeleid en het docentencorps van een school beïnvloeden de keuze om te innoveren. Het rapport bevat verder enkele beleidsaanbevelingen gebaseerd op de conclusies van het onderzoek.Education; Innovation; schools

    Schaal en zorg: Een inventariserend onderzoek naar de relatie tussen schaal, bereikbaarheid, kwaliteit en doelmatigheid in de zorg

    Deze studie, uitgevoerd in opdracht van de RVZ, tracht een inzicht te geven in de relatie tussen schaal, doelmatigheid, kwaliteit en bereikbaarheid van een aantal zorginstellingen in Nederland, op basis van een conceptueel kader, resultaten uit internationaal onderzoek en actuele en historische gegevens over zorginstellingen. Het eindrapport bevat enkele belangrijke uitkomsten. Zo blijkt dat de schaalvergroting in de zorg de afgelopen 20 jaar niet heeft geleid tot een sterke afname van de bereikbaarheid van zorginstellingen. In de ziekenhuissector is het aantal instellingen bijvoorbeeld sterk afgenomen, maar het aantal locaties (inclusief buitenpoliklinieken) juist toegenomen. Vanuit een internationaal perspectief bekeken zijn Nederlandse zorginstellingen verder aan de grote kant. Dit geldt ook vanuit het oogpunt van doelmatigheid. Doelmatigheidsargumenten kunnen derhalve geen rol spelen bij fusies tussen zorginstellingen.Health care; Scale; Reachability; Innovation

    Effectively Involving Low-SES Parents in Human Capital Development: Evidence from a Field Experiment

    In this paper we analyze the effect of involving parents in human capital investment. We study the effect of a parental app on student effort in a digital homework practice tool, and its effect on subsequent human capital development. The randomized field experiment includes more than 2000 7-9 grade students of 2 schools and we specifically focus on different socio-economic status (SES) groups. The results indicate that parental involvement via an app positively affects effort and human capital development of 7th and 8th grade students, but not of 9th grade students. The positive effects are mainly driven by low-SES students and are larger for males
