Excursion to the Romberg Quarry, Gildehaus, Germany; Slope Stability Probability Classification (SSPC)

    Get PDF
On 25 August 2018 a day excursion in rock mass classification was organized in Bad Bentheim, Germany, by the Dutch Association of Engineering Geologists (Ingeokring). In the Sandstone Museum of Bad Bentheim a short presentation was given on the Slope Stability Probability Classification (SSPC) (Hack et al., 2003). A rock mass classification and slope stability assessment was done to show the practical application of the SSPC system in the nearby Romberg Quarry in Gildehau

Board of governors conference "Bodem en Ondergrond" (Bestuurlijke conferentie Bodem en Ondergrond). Omgevingsdienst West-Holland organized the conference to discuss the use and future possibilities for use of the subsurface and the problems associated with using the subsurface. The geology of the subsurface in the area of the Omgevingsdienst West-Holland is not very promising. Oil & gas discoveries are limited and mostly not economic and also for geothermal energy the geology seems not optimum. Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) on varying depth is already used and likely to be used extensively in the near future. The geology of the area is reasonably known due to the oil & gas exploration, but still very limited certainly on larger depth. Many problems occur in geothermal installations due to aggressive water that corrodes pipes, installations and also degrades the permeability characteristics of the reservoir rock. The risks of geothermal energy are large and often the preliminary investigations are limited and consultants, project developers and owners of projects have limited or insufficient knowledge on geology. STES when extensively used may have implications for near surface groundwater and ground temperatures. A major problem in the area of West-Holland is the peat oxidation that may require serious changes in land use to be reduced

Numerical modelling of combined erosion and weathering of slopes in weak rock

Due to various decay processes associated with weathering, the stability of artificial slopes in weak rocks may be affected well within their envisaged engineering lifetime. Conceptually, the decay following the initial stress release after excavation can be described as a process seeking equilibrium between weathering and erosion. The extent to which such an equilibrium is actually reached influences the outcome of the weathering-erosion decay process as well as the effects that the decay has on the geotechnical properties of the exposed rock mass, and thus ultimately the stability of slopes affected by erosion and weathering. This paper combines two conceptual models for erosion and weathering, and derives a numerical model which predicts the resulting slope development. This can help to predict the development of a slope profile excavated in a weak rock in time, and can be extended with the addition of strength parameters to the weathering profile to enable prediction of slope stability as a function of tim
