Origin of Excitation Energy Dependence on Valence Nucleon Numbers
It has been shown recently that a simple formula in terms of the valence
nucleon numbers and the mass number can describe the essential trends of
excitation energies of the first states in even-even nuclei. By
evaluating the first order energy shift due to the zero-range residual
interaction, we find that the factor which reflects the effective particle
number participating in the interaction from the Fermi orbit governs the main
dependence of the first excitation energy on the valence nucleon numbers.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Interplay of charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom on the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model
We calculate the spectral function of the one dimensional Hubbard-Holstein
model using the time dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group (tDMRG),
focusing on the regime of large local Coulomb repulsion, and away from
electronic half-filling. We argue that, from weak to intermediate
electron-phonon coupling, phonons interact only with the electronic charge, and
not with the spin degrees of freedom. For strong electron-phonon interaction,
spinon and holon bands are not discernible anymore and the system is well
described by a spinless polaronic liquid. In this regime, we observe multiple
peaks in the spectrum with an energy separation corresponding to the energy of
the lattice vibrations (i.e., phonons). We support the numerical results by
introducing a well controlled analytical approach based on Ogata-Shiba's
factorized wave-function, showing that the spectrum can be understood as a
convolution of three contributions, originating from charge, spin, and lattice
sectors. We recognize and interpret these signatures in the spectral properties
and discuss the experimental implications.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Fast analytical methods for the correction of signal random time-shifts and application to segmented HPGe detectors
Detection systems rely more and more on on-line or off-line comparison of
detected signals with basis signals in order to determine the characteristics
of the impinging particles. Unfortunately, these comparisons are very sensitive
to the random time shifts that may alter the signal delivered by the detectors.
We present two fast algebraic methods to determine the value of the time shift
and to enhance the reliability of the comparison to the basis signals.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Kolmogorov-Smirnov method for the determination of signal time-shifts
A new method for the determination of electric signal time-shifts is
introduced. As the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, it is based on the comparison of
the cumulative distribution functions of the reference signal with the test
signal. This method is very fast and thus well suited for on-line applications.
It is robust to noise and its performances in terms of precision are excellent
for time-shifts ranging from a fraction to several sample durations.

One parameter family of indecomposable optimal entanglement witnesses arising from generalized Choi maps
In the recent paper [Chru\'{s}ci\'{n}ski and Wudarski, arXiv:1105.4821], it
was conjectured that the entanglement witnesses arising from some generalized
Choi maps are optimal. We show that this conjecture is true. Furthermore, we
show that they provide a one parameter family of indecomposable optimal
entanglement witnesses.Comment: 3 page
Antonio Gramsci’s impact on critical pedagogy
This paper provides an account of Antonio Gramsci’s impact on the area of critical pedagogy. It indicates the Gramscian influence on the thinking of major exponents of the field. It foregrounds Gramsci's ideas and then indicates how they have been taken up by a selection of critical pedagogy exponents who were chosen on the strength of their identification and engagement with Gramsci's ideas, some of them even having written entire essays on Gramsci. The essay concludes with a discussion concerning an aspect of Gramsci's concerns, the question of powerful knowledge, which, in the present author's view, provides a formidable challenge to critical pedagogues.peer-reviewe
Spitzer Observations of Interstellar Object 1I/`Oumuamua
1I/`Oumuamua is the first confirmed interstellar body in our Solar System.
Here we report on observations of `Oumuamua made with the Spitzer Space
Telescope on 2017 November 21--22 (UT). We integrated for 30.2~hours at 4.5
micron (IRAC channel 2). We did not detect the object and place an upper limit
on the flux of 0.3 uJy (3sigma). This implies an effective spherical diameter
less than [98, 140, 440] meters and albedo greater than [0.2, 0.1, 0.01] under
the assumption of low, middle, or high thermal beaming parameter eta,
respectively. With an aspect ratio for `Oumuamua of 6:1, these results
correspond to dimensions of [240:40, 341:57, 1080:180] meters, respectively. We
place upper limits on the amount of dust, CO, and CO2 coming from this object
that are lower than previous results; we are unable to constrain the production
of other gas species. Both our size and outgassing limits are important because
`Oumuamua's trajectory shows non-gravitational accelerations that are sensitive
to size and mass and presumably caused by gas emission. We suggest that
`Oumuamua may have experienced low-level post-perihelion volatile emission that
produced a fresh, bright, icy mantle. This model is consistent with the
expected eta value and implied high albedo value for this solution, but, given
our strict limits on CO and CO2, requires another gas species --- probably H2O
--- to explain the observed non-gravitational acceleration. Our results extend
the mystery of `Oumuamua's origin and evolution
Sustainability performance measurement : a preliminary classification framework of models and indicators
In this position paper we focus on the diversity of sustainability measurements. Based on existing research on performance measurement, we propose a preliminary classification framework summarizing sustainability models and indicators. By describing illustrative examples, we claim that several models and indicators can be distinguished with their own peculiarities. Having such a framework is interesting for both academia and business to structure the range of models and indicators and to ultimately select the appropriate sustainability measurement approach. The proposed framework should be validated by further research
Interference Effects Due to Commensurate Electron Trajectories and Topological Crossovers in (TMTSF)2ClO4
We report angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements on (TMTSF)2ClO4 that
provide strong support for a new macroscopic quantum phenomenon, the
interference commensurate (IC) effect, in quasi-one dimensional metals. In
addition to observing rich magnetoresistance oscillations, and fitting them
with one-electron calculations, we observe a clear demarcation of
field-dependent behavior at local resistance minima and maxima (versus field
angle). Anticipated by a theoretical treatment of the IC effect in terms of
Bragg reflections in the extended Brillouin zone, this behavior results from
1D-2D topological crossovers of electron wave functions as a function of field
orientation.Comment: 14 page
