Measuring Drug Abuse: The Development of the Chinese Drug Involvement Scale in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
The development of the Chinese Drug Involvement Scale for use in Chinese communities.Method: A battery of scales, including the Chinese Drug Involvement Scale and threemental health measures, were administered to 152 students of 13 to 18 years of age. Reliabilityand validity analyses were performed. The refined version was then cross-validated on a groupof identified drug abusers (N = 77). Results: The final version of the Chinese Drug InvolvementScale is a 22-item scale. Validation results demonstrate that the Chinese Drug Involvement Scalehas high reliability and a satisfactory level of validity. Conclusion: The Chinese Drug InvolvementScale is a global assessment of an individual's beliefs and values relating to drug use, apartfrom actual drug abuse behavior. The scale will be particularly useful for periodic assessmentsor outcome evaluation in treatment programs.postprin

Collaboration interface in Smart Metering Scheme

Theme: Towards a safe, reliable, sustainable intelligent power systemPaper no. I9FP0475Smart meter provides intelligence to serve demand side management. The development of electrical-load-signature technology provides an effective base to enable condition-based monitoring and energy-collaboration management among stakeholders. In a smart metering scheme, the three direct contributors are supplier, estate manager and consumer. Affiliated members are appliance manufacturers and sustainability managers. It is perceived that when a platform can be developed to permit members sharing information, trading benefits, and recommending energy plans. The development of a collaboration interface is to assist the principal members in supporting each other as neighboring aide in these activities. This paper discusses on philosophies and models that shall develop the concepts; and shares the development of this interface.postprintThe 15th International Conference on Electrical Engineering (ICEE 2009), Shenyang, China, 5-9 July 2009

A novel method to construct taxonomy electrical appliances based on load signatures

    Get PDF
A load signature is an electrical expression that a load device or appliance distinctly possesses. Load signatures can be applied to produce many useful services and products, such as, determining the energy usage of individual appliances, monitoring the health of critical equipment, monitoring power quality, and developing facility management tools. Load signatures of typical yet extensive loads are needed to be collected before applying them to different services and products. As there are an enormous number of electrical appliances, it is beneficial to classify the appliances for building a well-organized load signature database. The objective of this study is to develop an effective method to classify the loads. A 2-dimensional form of load signatures, voltage-current (V-I) trajectory, is suggested for characterizing the typical household appliances. Hierarchical clustering method was employed to classify the appliances and construct the taxonomy of the appliances. The taxonomy based on V-I trajectory was compared to the taxonomies based on traditional power metrics and eigenvectors in the previous studies. It was found that the groups of appliances in the taxonomy based on V-I trajectory were well-separated and had engineering meanings. © 2007 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Reports on WRDRR activities in Asia-Pacific region (Part 1)This report gives an account of the wind conditions in Hong Kong and the corresponding wind related damages in Hong Kong throughout the years. Details are presented in the report under three different aspects. First, typhoon wind and related damages; second, thunderstorm wind and related damages; and third, flooding related to wind storms and damages. Measures taken by the Hong Kong Government to reduce the risk of damages and disaster mitigation are also presented.postprin

An optimization model for a battery swapping station in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
In this paper, a battery swapping station (BSS) model is proposed as an economic and convenient way to provide energy for the batteries of the electric vehicles (EVs). This method would overcome some drawbacks to the use of electric vehicles like long charging time and insufficient running distance. On the economic concern of a battery swapping station, the station would optimize the availability of the batteries in stock, and at the same time determine the best strategy for recharging the batteries on hand. By optimizing the charging method of the batteries, an optimization model of BSS with the maximum number of batteries in stock has been developed for the bus terminal at the Hong Kong International Airport. The secondary objective would be to minimize a cost on the batteries due to the use of different charging schemes. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been used to implement the optimization model, and simulation results are shown.published_or_final_versio

Blind separation and localization of dipole sources of MEG

    Get PDF
We present a new approach to MEG inverse problem by modeling it into a standard blind source separation problem. In our approach, dipole sources and gain matrix are estimated without any knowledge about the head geometry and conductivity. Given the head model, we can compute dipole locations further. Our matrix pencil method developed before is suitable for this task and is applied in the simulation. Simulation results are presented.published_or_final_versio
