Diamond chemical vapor deposition on optical fibers for fluorescence waveguiding
A technique has been developed for depositing diamond crystals on the
endfaces of optical fibers and capturing the fluorescence generated by
optically active defects in the diamond into the fiber. This letter details the
diamond growth on optical fibers and transmission of fluorescence through the
fiber from the nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) color center in diamond. Control of the
concentration of defects incorporated during the chemical vapor deposition
(CVD) growth process is also demonstrated. These are the first critical steps
in developing a fiber coupled single photon source based on optically active
defect centers in diamond.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Multiplexed communication over a high-speed quantum channel
In quantum information systems it is of particular interest to consider the
best way in which to use the non-classical resources consumed by that system.
Quantum communication protocols are integral to quantum information systems and
are amongst the most promising near-term applications of quantum information
science. Here we show that a multiplexed, digital quantum communications system
supported by comb of vacuum squeezing has a greater channel capacity per photon
than a source of broadband squeezing with the same analogue bandwidth. We
report on the time-resolved, simultaneous observation of the first dozen teeth
in a 2.4 GHz comb of vacuum squeezing produced by a sub-threshold OPO, as
required for such a quantum communications channel. We also demonstrate
multiplexed communication on that channel
Utilisation of Whole-Crop Pea Silages Differing in Condensed Tannin Content as a Replacement for Soya Bean Meal in the Diet of Dairy Cows
Adesogan et al. (2004), has demonstrated that ensiled pea wheat intercrops can reduce the amount of concentrate fed to dairy cows by 50% without affecting milk yield or composition. A limitation of forage peas for high yielding dairy cows is the low by-pass protein content, but it has been suggested by Broderick (1995), that feeding forages that contain low levels of condensed tannin can improve nitrogen utilisation. Genome sequence of an alphaherpesvirus from a beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas)
Beluga whale alphaherpesvirus 1 was isolated from a blowhole swab taken from a juvenile beluga whale. The genome is 144,144 bp in size and contains 86 putative genes. The virus groups phylogenetically with members of the genus Varicellovirus in subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae and is the first alphaherpesvirus sequenced from a marine mammal
Teleportation of Nonclassical Wave Packets of light
We report on the experimental quantum teleportation of strongly nonclassical
wave packets of light. To perform this full quantum operation while preserving
and retrieving the fragile non-classicality of the input state, we have
developed a broadband, zero-dispersion teleportation apparatus that works in
conjunction with time-resolved state preparation equipment. Our approach brings
within experimental reach a whole new set of hybrid protocols involving
discrete- and continuous-variable techniques in quantum information processing
for optical sciences
Theory for the electromigration wind force in dilute alloys
A multiple scattering formulation for the electromigration wind force on
atoms in dilute alloys is developed. The theory describes electromigration via
a vacancy mechanism. The method is used to calculate the wind valence for
electromigration in various host metals having a close-packed lattice
structure, namely aluminum, the noble metals copper, silver and gold and the
transition metals. The self-electromigration results for aluminum and the
noble metals compare well with experimental data. For the metals small
wind valences are found, which make these metals attractive candidates for the

MPCVD processing of titanium-diffused LiNbO3 waveguides: optical characterisation and waveguide restoration
This paper presents some initial findings that explore the material properties of LiNbO3 which has been exposed to a microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) environment. The LiNbO3 was found to undergo a process known as 'reduction' when exposed to this environment. A technique was developed to reverse this process and recover the LiNbO3, which is a crucial first step towards the integration of diamond-based single photon sources with LiNbO3 waveguide technologies
Community detection in networks with positive and negative links
Detecting communities in complex networks accurately is a prime challenge,
preceding further analyses of network characteristics and dynamics. Until now,
community detection took into account only positively valued links, while many
actual networks also feature negative links. We extend an existing Potts model
to incorporate negative links as well, resulting in a method similar to the
clustering of signed graphs, as dealt with in social balance theory, but more
general. To illustrate our method, we applied it to a network of international
alliances and disputes. Using data from 1993--2001, it turns out that the world
can be divided into six power blocs similar to Huntington's civilizations, with
