Exposure damage mechanisms for KCl windows in high power laser systems
An experimental study of the 10.6 micrometer and 0.6328 micrometer optical properties of single crystal and europium doped polycrystal is described. Significant variations in the optical properties are observed over periods of exposure up to 100 hours. Models are proposed to predict the 10.6 micrometer absorptivity for long exposure periods. Mechanical creep has been detected in both materials at high temperature
Chaos in the Kepler System
The long-term dynamical evolution of a Keplerian binary orbit due to the
emission and absorption of gravitational radiation is investigated. This work
extends our previous results on transient chaos in the planar case to the three
dimensional Kepler system. Specifically, we consider the nonlinear evolution of
the relative orbit due to gravitational radiation damping as well as external
gravitational radiation that is obliquely incident on the initial orbital
plane. The variation of orbital inclination, especially during resonance
capture, turns out to be very sensitive to the initial conditions. Moreover, we
discuss the novel phenomenon of chaotic transition.Comment: RevTeX, 22 pages, 6 figure
Evolutionary Dynamics While Trapped in Resonance: A Keplerian Binary System Perturbed by Gravitational Radiation
The method of averaging is used to investigate the phenomenon of capture into
resonance for a model that describes a Keplerian binary system influenced by
radiation damping and external normally incident periodic gravitational
radiation. The dynamical evolution of the binary orbit while trapped in
resonance is elucidated using the second order partially averaged system. This
method provides a theoretical framework that can be used to explain the main
evolutionary dynamics of a physical system that has been trapped in resonance.Comment: REVTEX Style, Submitte
Arecibo timing and single-pulse observations of 17 pulsars
We report on timing and single-pulse observations of 17 pulsars discovered at
the Arecibo observatory. The highlights of our sample are the recycled pulsars
J1829+2456, J1944+0907 and the drifting subpulses observed in PSR J0815+0939.
For the double neutron star binary J1829+2456, in addition to improving upon
our existing measurement of relativistic periastron advance, we have now
measured the pulsar's spin period derivative. This new result sets an upper
limit on the transverse speed of 120 km/s and a lower limit on the
characteristic age of 12.4 Gyr. From our measurement of proper motion of the
isolated 5.2-ms pulsar J1944+0907, we infer a transverse speed of 188 +/- 65
km/s. This is higher than that of any other isolated millisecond pulsar. An
estimate of the speed, using interstellar scintillation, of 235 +/- 45 km/s
indicates that the scattering medium along the line of sight is non-uniform. We
discuss the drifting subpulses detected from three pulsars in the sample, in
particular the remarkable drifting subpulse properties of the 645-ms pulsar
J0815+0939. Drifting is observed in all four components of the pulse profile,
with the sense of drift varying among the different components. This unusual
`bi-drifting'' behaviour challenges standard explanations of the drifting

An AUC-based Permutation Variable Importance Measure for Random Forests
The random forest (RF) method is a commonly used tool for classification with high dimensional data as well as for ranking candidate predictors based on the so-called random forest variable importance measures (VIMs). However the classification performance of RF is known to be suboptimal in case of strongly unbalanced data, i.e. data where response class sizes differ considerably. Suggestions were made to obtain better classification performance based either on sampling procedures or on cost sensitivity analyses. However to our knowledge the performance of the VIMs has not yet been examined in the case of unbalanced response classes. In this paper we explore the performance of the permutation VIM for unbalanced data settings and introduce an alternative permutation VIM based on the area under the curve (AUC) that is expected to be more robust towards class imbalance. We investigated the performance of the standard permutation VIM and of our novel AUC-based permutation VIM for different class imbalance levels using simulated data and real data. The results suggest that the standard permutation VIM loses its ability to discriminate between associated predictors and predictors not associated with the response for increasing class imbalance. It is outperformed by our new AUC-based permutation VIM for unbalanced data settings, while the performance of both VIMs is very similar in the case of balanced classes. The new AUC-based VIM is implemented in the R package party for the unbiased RF variant based on conditional inference trees. Development of a histopathology scoring system for the pulmonary complications of organophosphorus insecticide poisoning in a pig model
Organophosphorus (OP) insecticide self-poisoning causes over 100,000 global deaths annually. Around a third of patients are intubated and up to half of these can die. Post-mortem analysis of OP poisoned patients' lungs reveals consolidation, edema and hemorrhage, suggesting that direct or indirect lung damage may contribute to mortality. The lung injury caused by these formulated agricultural preparations is poorly characterised in humans, and a valid histopathology scoring system is needed in a relevant animal model to further investigate the disease and potential treatments. We conducted two pilot studies in anesthetized minipigs, which are commonly used for toxicological studies. In the first, pigs were given 2.5 mL/kg of either OP (n = 4) or saline (n = 2) by gavage and compared with positive controls (iv oleic acid n = 2). The second study simulated ingestion followed by gastric content aspiration: mixtures of OP (n = 3) or saline (n = 2) (0.63-0.71mL/kg) were placed in the stomach, and then small volumes of the gastric content were placed in the lung. At post-mortem examination, lungs were removed and inflation-fixed with 10% neutral buffered formalin. Samples (n = 62) were taken from cranial and caudal regions of both lungs. Two experienced lung histopathologists separately scored these samples using 8 proposed features of damage and their scores related (Kendall rank order). Two elements had small and inconsistent scores. When these were removed, the correlation increased from 0.74 to 0.78. Eight months later, a subset of samples (n = 35) was re-scored using the modified system by one of the previous histopathologists, with a correlation of 0.88. We have developed a reproducible pulmonary histopathology scoring system for OP poisoning in pigs which will assist future toxicological research and improve understanding and treatment of human OP poisoning
FMECA and FTA analysis applied to the manufacturing process of pulsating heat pipes
Pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) offer significant advantages for the thermal control of electronic components due to their simple manufacturing and high heat transfer rates. The reliability of PHPs has traditionally been assessed through long-life testing, but detailed reliability analyses from an equipment perspective are limited. The study of PHP reliability is essential due to its application and operational conditions. For instance, in aerospace applications these devices operate under severe conditions, and maintenance or replacement is impossible during operation, making them critical components in system functionality. The reliability analysis of PHPs focuses on the manufacturing process, considering future operating conditions. Although preliminary PHP testing will be conducted on Earth, laboratory conditions are less stringent due to the difficulty of replicating launch acceleration and space conditions for long-term testing under microgravity. This study presents an FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) of the pulsating heat pipe manufacturing process, breaking down the production of each component. The results indicate that the most critical point is concentrated in the assembly of these components, leading to a higher incidence of welding failures. It recommends further work to improve welding and analyze mechanical stresses within the heat pipe
PSR J1829+2456: a relativistic binary pulsar
We report the discovery of a new binary pulsar, PSR J1829+2456, found during
a mid-latitude drift-scan survey with the Arecibo telescope. Our initial timing
observations show the 41-ms pulsar to be in a 28-hr, slightly eccentric, binary
orbit. The advance of periastron, omegadot = 0.28 +/- 0.01 deg/yr is derived
from our timing observations spanning 200 days. Assuming that the advance of
periastron is purely relativistic and a reasonable range of neutron star masses
for PSR J1829+2456 we constrain the companion mass to be between 1.22 Msun and
1.38 Msun, making it likely to be another neutron star. We also place a firm
upper limit on the pulsar mass of 1.38 Msun. The expected coalescence time due
to gravitational-wave emission is long (~60 Gyr) and this system will not
significantly impact upon calculations of merger rates that are relevant to
