The Functional Derivation of Master Equations
Master equations describe the quantum dynamics of open systems interacting
with an environment. They play an increasingly important role in understanding
the emergence of semiclassical behavior and the generation of entropy, both
being related to quantum decoherence. Presently we derive the exact master
equation for a homogeneous scalar Higgs or inflaton like field coupled to an
environment field represented by an infinite set of harmonic oscillators. Our
aim is to demonstrate a derivation directly from the path integral
representation of the density matrix propagator. Applications and
generalizations of this result are discussed.Comment: 10 pages; LaTex. - Contribution to the workshop Hadron Physics VI,

An empirical comparison between direct and indirect test result checking approaches
The SOQUA 2006 Workshop was held in conjunction with the 14th ACM SIGSOFT International Symposium on Foundations of Software Engineering (SIGSOFT 2006/FSE-14) ACM Press, New York, NY.An oracle on software testing is a mechanism for checking whether the system under test has behaved correctly for any executions. In some situations, oracles are unavailable or too expensive to apply. This is known as the oracle problem. It is crucial to develop techniques to address it, and metamorphic testing (MT) was one of such proposals. This paper conducts a controlled experiment to investigate the cost effectiveness of using MT by 38 testers on three open-source programs. The fault detection capability and time cost of MT are compared with the popular assertion checking method. Our results show that MT is cost-efficient and has potentials for detecting more faults than the assertion checking method. On testing the violation of the Clausius inequality in nanoscale electric circuits
The Clausius inequality, one of the classical formulations of the second law,
was recently found to be violated in the quantum regime. Here this result is
formulated in the context of a mesoscopic or nanoscale linear RLC circuit
interacting with a thermal bath. Previous experiments in this and related
fields are analyzed and possibilities of experimental detection of the
violation are pointed out. It is discussed that recent experiments reached the
range of temperatures, where the effect should be visible, and that a part of
the proposal was already confirmed.Comment: 5 pages revtex 4. No figure

Adhesion Induced DNA Naturation
DNA adsorption and naturation is modeled via two interacting flexible
homopolymers coupled to a solid surface. DNA denatures if the entropy gain for
unbinding the two strands overcomes the loss of binding energy. When adsorbed
to a surface, the entropy gain is smaller than in the bulk, leading to a
stronger binding and, upon neglecting self-avoidance, absence of a denatured
phase. Now consider conditions where the binding potentials are too weak for
naturation, and the surface potential too weak to adsorb single strands. In a
variational approach it is shown that their combined action may lead to a
naturated adsorbed phase. Conditions for the absence of naturation and
adsorption are derived too. The phase diagram is constructed qualitatively.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
Wideband saturable absorption in few-layer molybdenum diselenide (MoSeâ‚‚) for Q-switching Yb-, Er- and Tm-doped fiber lasers.
We fabricate a free-standing molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) saturable absorber by embedding liquid-phase exfoliated few-layer MoSe2 flakes into a polymer film. The MoSe2-polymer composite is used to Q-switch fiber lasers based on ytterbium (Yb), erbium (Er) and thulium (Tm) gain fiber, producing trains of microsecond-duration pulses with kilohertz repetition rates at 1060 nm, 1566 nm and 1924 nm, respectively. Such operating wavelengths correspond to sub-bandgap saturable absorption in MoSe2, which is explained in the context of edge-states, building upon studies of other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based saturable absorbers. Our work adds few-layer MoSe2 to the growing catalog of TMDs with remarkable optical properties, which offer new opportunities for photonic devices.EJRK and TH acknowledge support from the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), through RAEng Fellowships. This is the author accepted manuscript. Quantum energy flow in mesoscopic dielectric structures
We investigate the phononic energy transport properties of mesoscopic,
suspended dielectric wires. The Landauer formula for the thermal conductance is
derived and its universal aspects discussed. We then determine the variance of
the energy current in the presence of a steady state current flow. In the final
part, some initial results are presented concerning the nature of the
temperature fluctuations of a mesoscopic electron gas thermometer due to the
absorption and emission of wire phonons.Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
A spatial publish subscribe overlay for massively multiuser virtual environments
Proceedings of the International Conference on Electronics and Information Engineering, 2010, v. 2, p. 314-318Peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures have become popular for designing scalable virtual environments (VEs) in recent years. However, one question that remains is whether a single overlay can be flexible enough to support different types of VEs. We present S-VON, a P2P overlay that attempts this goal by providing spatial publish / subscribe (SPS) services. Besides flexibility, S-VON also aims to be practical and efficient by utilizing super-peers and considering the physical topology (i.e., network distance) to reduce latencies. Our simulations show that super-peers provide a unique design space where both bandwidth usage and latencies can be effectively reduced, such that even a crowded Second Life region can be hosted with residential ADSL. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Ballistic spin-polarized transport and Rashba spin precession in semiconductor nanowires
We present numerical calculations of the ballistic spin-transport properties
of quasi-one-dimensional wires in the presence of the spin-orbit (Rashba)
interaction. A tight-binding analog of the Rashba Hamiltonian which models the
Rashba effect is used. By varying the robustness of the Rashba coupling and the
width of the wire, weak and strong coupling regimes are identified. Perfect
electron spin-modulation is found for the former regime, regardless of the
incident Fermi energy and mode number. In the latter however, the
spin-conductance has a strong energy dependence due to a nontrivial subband
intermixing induced by the strong Rashba coupling. This would imply a strong
suppression of the spin-modulation at higher temperatures and source-drain
voltages. The results may be of relevance for the implementation of
quasi-one-dimensional spin transistor devices.Comment: 19 pages (incl. 9 figures). To be published in PR
