Human Capital, Education, and Entrepreneurs: Evidence from the Yangtze River Delta
This paper seeks to examine the relationship between education demand and entrepreneurs in the process of enhancing the growth of human capital in China. We develop a theoretical model that incorporates the important roles played by human capital, education and entrepreneurs. Then, we derive an immigration condition under which the demand for education depends on the existence of entrepreneurs. Finally, we test whether this condition holds true in China, using a panel data set from the Yangtze River Delta which is considered a key barometer of Chinese economy. The empirical results reveal a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurs and education demand in the Yangtze River Delta, suggesting that if we can find ways to promote the growth of entrepreneurial endeavors, we could spur the growth of education demand and further drive human capital accumulation in China
Impact of industrial linkages on firm performance in development zones
This article investigates the effect of industrial linkages on firm performance in Chinese development zones, using Jiangsu Province as a case study. An ordered response model based on the dependent variable being ordinal was developed. The empirical results reveal an insignificant relationship between industrial linkages and firm performance. Our interpretation of this finding mainly lies with the global and domestic challenges that have changed the way participating firms operate and organize in the development zones of Jiangsu. When many other economic factors take precedence over industrial linkages in driving superior firm performance, firms feel it less important to get closer to their suppliers or customers, therefore weakening the impact of industrial linkages. Although this article primarily focuses on development zones in Jiangsu Province, the findings and discussion will provide insights for other development zones in China that may be, reviewing their development strategies because most of them have similar development problems.Industrial linkages; Development zones
Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Growth:The Case of Yangtze River Delta in China
This paper firstly discusses why the economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta has been slowed down recently and suggests a need totransform the current input-based economic growth pattern into aninnovation-based one. Next, through our theoretical analysis, we find that the change of current economic growth pattern is just the innovative reallocationof production factors, and the new economic growth driven by innovation is mainly initiated by the transmutation of entrepreneurship. Finally, we test our belief with real-world evidence. It shows that the Delta has formed a mechanism in which entrepreneurship and human capital mutually promote each other. However, the interactive relationship between R&D expenditure and entrepreneurship has not been developed in general. On 3D simultaneous attack against manoeuvring target with communication delays
This article investigates the simultaneous attack problem of multiple missiles against a manoeuvring target with delayed information transmission in three-dimensional space. Based on the kinetic model of the missiles, the problem is divided into three demands: the velocity components normal to line-of-sight converge to zero in finite time, the component of motion states along line-of-sight should achieve consensus and converge to zero. The guidance law is designed for each demand and by theoretical proof, the upper bound of delay which can tolerate is presented and the consensus error of the relative distances can converge to a small neighbourhood of zero. And simulation example presented also demonstrates the validity of the theoretical result

The Influence of Neighbourhood Environment on Airbnb: a Geographically Weighed Regression Analysis
Sharing accommodation has emerged recently as a new business model in the accommodation sector. Due to the potential gentrification Airbnb might bring to an area, it is critical to understand the spatial patterns of sharing economy and its possible determinants. The neighbourhood environment has proven to be an important factor in the traditional hotel business, and whether it is the same for sharing accommodation is worth investigating. In this study, location data of 29,780 houses/apartments on Airbnb.com in London was collected. Using Ordinal Least Square and Geography Weighed Regression analysis, the spatial distribution features of Airbnb and its relationship with neighbourhood environment in London were explored. The results show that sharing accommodation is mainly located in the city centre and around tourist attractions. Neighbourhood elements such as Water, Vegetation Coverage, Art & Human Landscape, Travel & Transport, University, Nightlife Spot emerged as important factors influencing Airbnb. In addition, the distribution of Airbnb in London is spatially non-stationary, in some areas high Airbnb is associated with higher transportation accessibility, in other areas, high Airbnb is associated with more attractions or nightlife spots, suggesting that the role of different factors varies in different regions, proving Tobler’s first law of geography

Deacetylation of p53 induces autophagy by suppressing Bmf expression
Interferon γ (IFN-γ)–induced cell death is mediated by the BH3-only domain protein, Bik, in a p53-independent manner. However, the effect of IFN-γ on p53 and how this affects autophagy have not been reported. The present study demonstrates that IFN-γ down-regulated expression of the BH3 domain-only protein, Bmf, in human and mouse airway epithelial cells in a p53-dependent manner. p53 also suppressed Bmf expression in response to other cell death–stimulating agents, including ultraviolet radiation and histone deacetylase inhibitors. IFN-γ did not affect Bmf messenger RNA half-life but increased nuclear p53 levels and the interaction of p53 with the Bmf promoter. IFN-γ–induced interaction of HDAC1 and p53 resulted in the deacetylation of p53 and suppression of Bmf expression independent of p53’s proline-rich domain. Suppression of Bmf facilitated IFN-γ–induced autophagy by reducing the interaction of Beclin-1 and Bcl-2. Furthermore, autophagy was prominent in cultured bmf−/− but not in bmf+/+ cells. Collectively, these observations show that deacetylation of p53 suppresses Bmf expression and facilitates autophagy
Graphene/silicon heterojunction for reconfigurable phase-relevant activation function in coherent optical neural networks
Optical neural networks (ONNs) herald a new era in information and
communication technologies and have implemented various intelligent
applications. In an ONN, the activation function (AF) is a crucial component
determining the network performances and on-chip AF devices are still in
development. Here, we first demonstrate on-chip reconfigurable AF devices with
phase activation fulfilled by dual-functional graphene/silicon (Gra/Si)
heterojunctions. With optical modulation and detection in one device, time
delays are shorter, energy consumption is lower, reconfigurability is higher
and the device footprint is smaller than other on-chip AF strategies. The
experimental modulation voltage (power) of our Gra/Si heterojunction achieves
as low as 1 V (0.5 mW), superior to many pure silicon counterparts. In the
photodetection aspect, a high responsivity of over 200 mA/W is realized.
Special nonlinear functions generated are fed into a complex-valued ONN to
challenge handwritten letters and image recognition tasks, showing improved
accuracy and potential of high-efficient, all-component-integration on-chip
ONN. Our results offer new insights for on-chip ONN devices and pave the way to
high-performance integrated optoelectronic computing circuits
