Symmetric Skyrmions
We present candidates for the global minimum energy solitons of charge one to
nine in the Skyrme model, generated using sophisticated numerical algorithms.
Assuming the Skyrme model accurately represents the low energy limit of QCD,
these configurations correspond to the classical nuclear ground states of the
light elements. The solitons found are particularly symmetric, for example, the
charge seven skyrmion has icosahedral symmetry, and the shapes are shown to fit
a remarkable sequence defined by a geometric energy minimization (GEM) rule. We
also calculate the energies and sizes to within at least a few percent
accuracy. These calculations provide the basis for a future investigation of
the low energy vibrational modes of skyrmions and hence the possibility of
testing the Skyrme model against experiment.Comment: latex, 9 pages, 1 figure (fig1.gif
African Water: Supporting African involvement in the EU Framework Programme.
Water researchers in developing countries have yet to take full advantage of the funding and collaborative research opportunities presented by the EU Framework Programme. There are a variety of reasons for this, such as insufficient information and a lack of previous experience. The African Water initiative aims to increase the involvement of African water researchers through a range of activities including communication and dissemination, capacity building and development, and complementary initiatives. The project has demonstrated that there is a demand for such sector-specific support activities. However, African Water is a small component of a much larger process of partnership between the developed and the less-developed countries of the world, involving many different European and African organisations working across political, institutional and technical domains, and complementing the wide range of actions already being undertaken
THE ANOMALOUS DIFFUSION IN HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD AND THE QUASIPARTICLE DENSITY OF STATES
We consider a disordered two-dimensional electronic system in the limit of
high magnetic field at the metal-insulator transition. Density of states close
to the Fermi level acquires a divergent correction to the lowest order in
electron-electron interaction and shows a new power-law dependence on the
energy, with the power given by the anomalous diffusion exponent . This
should be observable in the tunneling experiment with double-well GaAs
heterostructure of the mobility at temperatures of and voltages of .Comment: 12 pages, LATEX, one figure available at request, accepted for

Falsification Of The Atmospheric CO2 Greenhouse Effects Within The Frame Of Physics
The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that many authors trace back to
the traditional works of Fourier (1824), Tyndall (1861), and Arrhenius (1896),
and which is still supported in global climatology, essentially describes a
fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary atmosphere acts as a heat pump
driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting with but radiatively
equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law of
thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist. Nevertheless, in
almost all texts of global climatology and in a widespread secondary literature
it is taken for granted that such mechanism is real and stands on a firm
scientific foundation. In this paper the popular conjecture is analyzed and the
underlying physical principles are clarified. By showing that (a) there are no
common physical laws between the warming phenomenon in glass houses and the
fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there are no calculations to
determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the frequently
mentioned difference of 33 degrees Celsius is a meaningless number calculated
wrongly, (d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the
assumption of a radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and
friction must not be set to zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is
falsified.Comment: 115 pages, 32 figures, 13 tables (some typos corrected
Inversion symmetric 3-monopoles and the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold
We consider 3-monopoles symmetric under inversion symmetry. We show that the
moduli space of these monopoles is an Atiyah-Hitchin submanifold of the
3-monopole moduli space. This allows what is known about 2-monopole dynamics to
be translated into results about the dynamics of 3-monopoles. Using a numerical
ADHMN construction we compute the monopole energy density at various points on
two interesting geodesics. The first is a geodesic over the two-dimensional
rounded cone submanifold corresponding to right angle scattering and the second
is a closed geodesic for three orbiting monopoles.Comment: latex, 22 pages, 2 figures. To appear in Nonlinearit
Crystal surfaces with correlated disorder: Phase transitions between roughening and superroughening
A theory for surface transitions in the presence of a disordered pinning
potential is presented. Arbitrary disorder correlations are treated in the
framework of a dynamical functional renormalization group. The roughening
transition, where surface roughness and mobility behave discontinuously, is
shown to turn smoothly into the continuous superroughening transition, when the
range of disorder correlations is decreased. Implications for random-field
-models and vortex glasses are discussed.Comment: 13 pages with 2 figures, latex+revte
Zero mode quantization of multi-Skyrmions
A zero mode quantization of the minimal energy SU(2) Skyrmions for nucleon
numbers four to nine and seventeen is described. This involves quantizing the
rotational and isorotational modes of the configurations. For nucleon numbers
four, six and eight the ground states obtained are in agreement with the
observed nuclear states of Helium, Lithium and Beryllium. However, for nucleon
numbers five, seven, nine and seventeen the spins obtained conflict with the
observed isodoublet nuclear states.Comment: 37 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures. More careful treatment of double covers,

New algorithm and results for the three-dimensional random field Ising Model
The random field Ising model with Gaussian disorder is studied using a new
Monte Carlo algorithm. The algorithm combines the advantanges of the replica
exchange method and the two-replica cluster method and is much more efficient
than the Metropolis algorithm for some disorder realizations. Three-dimensional
sytems of size are studied. Each realization of disorder is simulated at
a value of temperature and uniform field that is adjusted to the phase
transition region for that disorder realization. Energy and magnetization
distributions show large variations from one realization of disorder to
another. For some realizations of disorder there are three well separated peaks
in the magnetization distribution and two well separated peaks in the energy
distribution suggesting a first-order transition.Comment: 24 pages, 23 figure
Elastic Chain in a Random Potential: Simulation of the Displacement Function and Relaxation
We simulate the low temperature behaviour of an elastic chain in a random
potential where the displacements are confined to the {\it longitudinal}
direction ( parallel to ) as in a one dimensional charge density
wave--type problem. We calculate the displacement correlation function and the size dependent average square displacement
. We find that with
at short distances and at intermediate
distances. We cannot resolve the asymptotic long distance dependence of
upon . For the system sizes considered we find with . The exponent is in agreement
with the Random Manifold exponent obtained from replica calculations and the
exponent is consistent with an exact solution for the chain
with {\it transverse} displacements ( perpendicular to ).The
distribution of nearest distances between pinning wells and chain-particles is
found to develop forbidden regions.Comment: 19 pages of LaTex, 6 postscript figures available on request,

The Arecibo Arp 220 Spectral Census I: Discovery of the Pre-Biotic Molecule Methanimine and New Cm-wavelength Transitions of Other Molecules
An on-going Arecibo line search between 1.1 and 10 GHz of the prototypical
starburst/megamaser galaxy, Arp 220, has revealed a spectrum rich in molecular
transitions. These include the ``pre-biotic'' molecules: methanimine
(CHNH) in emission, three direct l-type absorption lines of
HCN, and an absorption feature likely to be from either OH or formic
acid (HCOOH). In addition, we report the detection of two, possibly three,
transitions of 4-cm excited OH not previously detected in Arp~220
which are seen in absorption, and a possible absorption feature from the
6.668-GHz line of methanol. This marks the first distant extragalactic
detection of methanimine, a pre-biotic molecule. Also, if confirmed, the
possible methanol absorption line presented here would represent the first
extragalactic detection of methanol at a distance further than 10 Mpc. In
addition, the strong, previously undetected, cm-wave HCN direct
l-type lines will aid the study of dense molecular gas and active star-forming
regions in this starburst galaxy.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in A
