Quantum Decoherence with Holography
Quantum decoherence is the loss of a system's purity due to its interaction
with the surrounding environment. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study how
a system decoheres when its environment is a strongly-coupled theory. In the
Feynman-Vernon formalism, we compute the influence functional holographically
by relating it to the generating function of Schwinger-Keldysh propagators and
thereby obtain the dynamics of the system's density matrix.
We present two exactly solvable examples: (1) a straight string in a BTZ
black hole and (2) a scalar probe in AdS. We prepare an initial state that
mimics Schr\"odinger's cat and identify different stages of its decoherence
process using the time-scaling behaviors of R\'enyi entropy. We also relate
decoherence to local quantum quenches, and by comparing the time evolution
behaviors of the Wigner function and R\'enyi entropy we demonstrate that the
relaxation of local quantum excitations leads to the collapse of its
wave-function.Comment: 55 pages, 13 figures; v2 47 pages & 13 figs, minor revision to match

The effect of slurry composition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of open-cell Inconel foams manufactured by the slurry coating technique
Open-cell nickel-based alloy foams are attractive materials for applications such as sound damping and heat exchange, especially those involving exposure to high temperature environments. This study demonstrated the potential of a developed slurry coating technique for manufacturing open-cell Inconel alloy foams, and then investigated the effect of slurry composition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the foams. It was found that the compressive properties of the foam can be quantitatively related to its relative density using the empirical equations. The deformation behaviour of the foam is bending-dominated; and unit cell struts undergo brittle fracture after the elastic region. Increasing the slurry solid loading leads to a higher average bulk foam density and more non-uniform crush bands in the foam under compression. Compared to other fabrication processes, this slurry coating technique is able to produce open-cell Inconel foams with relatively higher strength-to-weight ratios. This study also revealed that the sound absorption capability of the foam increases when its unit cell size is reduced
Alternative Route to Strong Interaction: Narrow Feshbach Resonance
We show that a narrow resonance produces strong interaction effects far
beyond its width on the side of the resonance where the bound state has not
been formed. This is due to a resonance structure of its phase shift, which
shifts the phase of a large number of scattering states by before the
bound state emerges. As a result, the magnitude of the interaction energy when
approaching the resonance on the "upper" and "lower" branch from different side
of the resonance is highly asymmetric, unlike their counter part in wide
resonances. Measurements of these effects are experimentally feasible.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Domains via approximation operators
In this paper, we tailor-make new approximation operators inspired by rough
set theory and specially suited for domain theory. Our approximation operators
offer a fresh perspective to existing concepts and results in domain theory,
but also reveal ways to establishing novel domain-theoretic results. For
instance, (1) the well-known interpolation property of the way-below relation
on a continuous poset is equivalent to the idempotence of a certain
set-operator; (2) the continuity of a poset can be characterized by the
coincidence of the Scott closure operator and the upper approximation operator
induced by the way below relation; (3) meet-continuity can be established from
a certain property of the topological closure operator. Additionally, we show
how, to each approximating relation, an associated order-compatible topology
can be defined in such a way that for the case of a continuous poset the
topology associated to the way-below relation is exactly the Scott topology. A
preliminary investigation is carried out on this new topology.Comment: 17 pages; 1figure, Domains XII Worksho
