Contractive De-noising Auto-encoder
Auto-encoder is a special kind of neural network based on reconstruction.
De-noising auto-encoder (DAE) is an improved auto-encoder which is robust to
the input by corrupting the original data first and then reconstructing the
original input by minimizing the reconstruction error function. And contractive
auto-encoder (CAE) is another kind of improved auto-encoder to learn robust
feature by introducing the Frobenius norm of the Jacobean matrix of the learned
feature with respect to the original input. In this paper, we combine
de-noising auto-encoder and contractive auto- encoder, and propose another
improved auto-encoder, contractive de-noising auto- encoder (CDAE), which is
robust to both the original input and the learned feature. We stack CDAE to
extract more abstract features and apply SVM for classification. The experiment
result on benchmark dataset MNIST shows that our proposed CDAE performed better
than both DAE and CAE, proving the effective of our method.Comment: Figures edite
Is promoting war trauma such a good idea?
A well-known medical journal, The Lancet, recently published an important systematic review and meta-analysis of mental disorder estimates in conflict settings, advocating for the scaling up of mental health interventions in such contexts. However, there is an assumption that the introduction of such treatments has no significant impact, except from a therapeutic one, in the settings they have been imported to. The authors' research in post-conflict northern Uganda analyzed the social impact of mental health interventions addressing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and showed that promoting trauma has had considerable socio-economic ramifications on the wider society. The introduction of trauma narratives has created a market where some are able to thrive, but many deeply troubled individuals remain invisible. The authors found no social benefits from promoting trauma, and few positive effects for individuals. Arguments for urgently upscaling mental health interventions of the kinds highlighted by the review in The Lancet, and which the authors have observed on the ground, should be treated with caution
Separation of the Longitudinal and Transverse Cross Sections in the p(ee'K)Lambda and p(ee'K)Sigma Reactions
We report measurements of cross sections for the reaction p(e,e'K)Y, for both
the Lambda and Sigma_0 hyperon states, at an invariant mass of W=1.84 GeV and
four-momentum transfers 0.5<Q2<2 (GeV/c)2. Data were taken for three values of
virtual photon polarization, allowing the decomposition of the cross sections
into longitudinal and transverse components. The Lambda data is a revised
analysis of prior work, whereas the Sigma_0 results have not been previously
