The differences in attitudes and achievements in mathematics among socio-economic levels : an honors thesis (HONRS 499)
A continual goal of a teacher is to find new ways to reach students so that they become successful in school. I suggest that one factor that has an effect on a student's successes as well as attitudes regarding mathematics, in particular, is their socio-economic status. In order to support my thesis, I have completed several items. First, a school comparison between an affluent school and one from an area with a lower socio-economic area is included. What follows is a literature review of the limited published material that presently exists on the topic, which includes possible causes and solutions. Finally, a survey that could be used as a diagnostic tool to gauge student attitudes is included. If the cause of failure is pinpointed and a cause is then found, teachers are one step closer to attaining their goal of reaching students.Honors CollegeThesis (B.?.
Psychology as a STEM discipline
Psychology is a science that contributes greatly to a number of other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Unfortunately, it is not often recognised as a STEM discipline. This discussion paper considers psychologyâs membership as a STEM subject and the impact that it has had on our everyday lives. The author suggests that postgraduate students working on innovative, inter-disciplinary research can not only contribute to psychologyâs standing, but can also help to communicate the value of what psychologists do. Reflections from the authorâs experiences as a STEM Ambassador are also included, with reference to The University of Northamptonâs unique STEM Steering Group and STEM Champions programme
Non-linear bioconvection in a deep suspension of gyrotactic swimming micro-organisms
The non-linear structure of deep, stochastic, gyrotactic bioconvection is explored. A linear analysis is reviewed and a weakly non-linear analysis justifies its application by revealing the supercritical nature of the bifurcation. An asymptotic expansion is used to derive systems of partial differential equations for long plume structures which vary slowly with depth. Steady state and travelling wave solutions are found for the first order system of partial differential equations and the second order system is manipulated to calculate the speed of vertically travelling pulses. Implications of the results and possibilities of experimental validation are discussed
Evaluation of Includemâs intensive support services â September 2007
In 2005 Includem commissioned a two-year evaluation of its intensive support services provided to young people as part of the Intensive Support and Monitoring Service in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, East Dunbartonshire, and West Dunbartonshire. Over two years Includemâs provided intensive support, normally around 15 hours per week plus access to Includemâs 24-hour crisis helpline, to over 200 young people, including 69 young people with a Movement Restriction Condition ('electronic tag')

Instrumentation for Millimeter-wave Magnetoelectrodynamic Investigations of Low-Dimensional Conductors and Superconductors
We describe instrumentation for conducting high sensitivity millimeter-wave
cavity perturbation measurements over a broad frequency range (40-200 GHz) and
in the presence of strong magnetic fields (up to 33 tesla). A Millimeter-wave
Vector Network Analyzer (MVNA) acts as a continuously tunable microwave source
and phase sensitive detector (8-350 GHz), enabling simultaneous measurements of
the complex cavity parameters (resonance frequency and Q-value) at a rapid
repetition rate (approx. 10 kHz). We discuss the principal of operation of the
MVNA and the construction of a probe for coupling the MVNA to various
cylindrical resonator configurations which can easily be inserted into a high
field magnet cryostat. We also present several experimental results which
demonstrate the potential of the instrument for studies of low-dimensional
