A People's History Of Recent Urban Transportation Innovation

    Get PDF
Who are the people leading the charge in urban transportation? As our report explains, the short answer is that it takes leaders from three different sectors of urban society to make change happen quickly.First, there needs to be a robust civic vanguard, the more diverse their range of skills and participation, the better. Second, mayors, commissioners and other city leaders need to create the mandate and champion the change. The third sector is the agency staff. When these three sectors align, relatively quick transformation is possible. Several cities, including New York and Pittsburgh, recently experienced this alignment of a healthy civic community, a visionary and bold mayor and transportation head, and internal agency champions. Our report also highlighted the potential of other cities, such as Charlotte, where the civic sector continues to build on and widen their base

Meanings of the Sabbath for Worship in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church

This study investigates the meanings and significance of the seventh-day Sabbath for worship in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In recent years, both the day and concept of Sabbath have attracted ecumenical attention, but the focus of scholarship has been placed on Sunday as the Lord's Day or Sabbath with little consideration given to the seventh-day Sabbath. In contrast, this project examines the seventh-day Sabbath and worship on that day from theological, liturgical, biblical and historical perspectives. Although not intended as an apology for Seventh-day Adventist practices, the work does strive to promote a critical and creative conversation with other theological and liturgical traditions in order to promote mutual, ecumenical understanding. Historical research into the origins and nature of the principal day for weekly Christian worship provides a starting point for discussion on Sabbath. Reconsideration of the relationship between Judaism and early Christianity in recent studies suggests that the influence of Judaism lasted longer than previously supposed, thereby prolonging the developmental process of Sabbath (seventh day) to Sunday. A possible coexistence of Sabbath and Sunday in early Christianity offers an alternative to perspectives that dichotomize Sabbath and Sunday from Christian antiquity onward, and thus for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, suggests biblical and historical validity for their Sabbath worship practice. Recent theological perspectives on Sabbath and Sunday are examined, particularly those of Karl Barth, Jürgen Moltmann and Pope John Paul II. While all three of these theologians stress the continuity of Sabbath and Sunday and speak mainly to a theology of Sunday, they do highlight the significance of Sabbath—which is relevant to an interpretation of seventh-day Sabbath worship. The study concludes that the seventh-day Sabbath is significant for worship in the Seventh-day Adventist Church because it symbolizes the relationship between God and human beings, reminds humanity of the creating and redeeming God who acts in history, and invites persons to rest and fellowship with God on a day sanctified by God

A 60-year-old man with neovascular glaucoma due to diabetic retinopathy received an intravitreal injection of 1.25 mg bevacizumab (IVB) followed by extensive panretinal photocoagulation in the right eye. The anterior segment neovascularization regressed within 10 days after IVB. One and a half months later, the patient underwent gastrectomy for stage IIIb gastric cancer. Two months later, he was started on S-1 orally (100 mg/day for 48, 26, and 32 consecutive days in the first, second, and third treatment cycle, respectively). The interval between the first and second treatment cycle was 20 days and between the second and third cycle it was 24 days. The patient developed anemia and diarrhea. At the end of the second S-1 cycle, cystoid macular edema developed in the right eye, although diabetic retinopathy and neovascular glaucoma were stable. Macular edema persisted for 5 months despite another IVB, and disappeared 3 months after termination of S-1 therapy. The time course of the magnitude of macular edema correlated well with the severity of anemia. The macular edema was possibly associated with anemia, which is a major side effect of S-1. Further studies are warranted to investigate the relationship between anemia and macular edema in patients with diabetic retinopathy

Experimental Studies on Steady-state Oil Flows through Restrictors

When orifices and nozlzes are used in oil hydraulic lines, some of their characteristics come out more distinctly, owing to a high oil viscosity, than for less viscous fluids like water and gas. Taking advantgae of this fact, this paper intends to contribute toward the study of steady-state constriction flows, by conducting a few elementary measurements of oil flows through restrictors. In the first place pressures are measured on a pipe wall before and after a circular orifice. The rseults force the classical picture of an orifice flow to be modified. That is, the pressure begins to decrease from several pipe-diameters upstream from the orifice, instead of sightly increasing toward the orifice as has conventionally been imagined. Furthermore, in the downstream region, the pressure recovery suddenly disappears for Reynolds numbers below a certain critical value. Secondly, the mouth area - pressure drop - flow rate relations are properly measured for a poppet-type restrictor. It turns out that a linear loss as well as a non-linear loss plays an important role in a constriction oil flow around a poppet. The results are further used to predict the static performances of the poppet valve when it works as a relief valve for an ordinary purpose

The microorganisms belonging to actinomycetes been important as the antibiotic producers and my major job has been a screening for useful new antibiotics produced by a actinomycete almost in my reseach. My collaborators and I found nineteen new antibiotics between 1956 and 1980 and thereafter three antibiotics particululy (Enramycin-feed additive,Validamycin-agriculture use, effective against the seach blight disease of rice plants,Ssdecamycin-effective agaist swine dysenteriae)were developed for industrial production and become useful for many people. And also we were interrested in those chemical structres and activities, fermentation processes by mutants or producing organsums namely rufomycins, maridomycins and ansamitocins. And from another point a new assay method for the activities of disinfectants was epoch making invesitgation.

AbstractLaLnO3 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Y, Er, and Yb) and La(Ln, Ln’)O3 (Ln, Ln’ = Dy, Ho, Er, and Yb) systems were synthesized by solid state reaction method and characterized by X-ray diffraction. When Ln = Er or Yb which has smaller ionic radius than that of Y3+ (0.900Å), the LaLnO3 showed an orthorhombic perovskite structure, while when Ln = Dy or Ho which has larger ionic radius than that of Y3+, it showed a monoclinic B-type rare earth structure. Next, the solid solution system of LaHoxYb1-xO3 was investigated in order to clarify the crystallochemical factor affecting the structural transformation. The XRD experiments revealed that the samples with x = 0.90 (rav.=0.8977Å) showed the orthorhombic perovskite structure, changed to the mixed phases of monoclinic B-type rare earth, and orthorhombic perovskite structures with increasing x, and then the samples with x ≥ 0.95 (rav.=0.8994Å) showed the monoclinic B-type rare earth structures, where rav. represents the average ionic radii of Ln and Ln’

Ejecta Size Distribution Resulting from Hypervelocity Impact of Spherical Projectiles on CFRP Laminates

AbstractThe size distributions of ejecta resulting from projectile perforation of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminates were examined. The shape of the ejecta cone and the debris cloud was observed using a high-speed video camera. The ejecta fragments were collected from the test chamber after impact experiments. The number of fragments ejected on the front side of the target was altered by the impact velocity. Conversely, regardless of impact velocity, the number of fragments ejected on the rear side of the target was almost the same. The results were also compared with the results of NASA's breakup model. The slope on the cumulative number distribution curve of characteristic length, LC, was almost the same as that of NASA's breakup model. The area-to-mass ratio distribution of ejecta fragments from CFRP laminates ranged within and above the area surrounded by ±3σ of NASA's breakup model
