    Get PDF
A complete complementary code based direct sequence code division multiple access (CC/DS-CDMA) system has been proposed recently as a potential candidate for beyond third generation (B3G) wireless communications. This paper addresses the issues that design of efficient code assignment schemes should be based on a flexible physical layer support, which is extremely important for emerging cross-layer designs in future wireless applications. The study in this paper considers a CC/DS-CDMA system with multiple time slots, three traffic classes and two dynamic code-flock assignment schemes, namely random assignment (RA) and compact assignment (CA). Simulation results show that the CC/DS-CDMA system has variable capacity property (VCP), which is sensitively affected by different code-flock assignment schemes. In general, CA can offer lower blocking probability, whereas RA can offer a larger mean system capacity and higher throughput when offered traffic is heavy

Dynanics of a vehicle-track coupling system at a rail joint

    Get PDF
The dynamic behaviour at a rail joint is examined using a two-dimensional vehicle–track coupling model. The track system is described as a finite-length beam resting on a double-layer discrete viscous-elastic foundation. The vehicle is represented by a half car body and a single bogie. The influence of the number of layers considered, the number of elements between two sleepers, and the beam model is investigated. Parametric studies, both of the coupling model and the analytic formulae, are carried out in order to understand the influence of the main track and vehicle parameters on the P1 and P2 peak forces. Finally, the results in terms of P2 force from the proposed model are compared, not only with measured values but also with other simulated and analytical solutions. An excellent agreement between these values is foun

New Terms for the Compact Form of Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian

The compact form of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian is a reformulation of its original form and is expressed in terms of chiral rotated electroweak gauge fields, which is crucial for relating the information of underlying theories to the coefficients of the low-energy effective Lagrangian. However the compact form obtained in previous works is not complete. In this letter we add several new chiral invariant terms to it and discuss the contributions of these terms to the original electroweak chiral Lagrangian.Comment: 3 pages, references adde

Micropollutants removal and health risk reduction in a water reclamation and ecological reuse system

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd As reclaimed water use is increasing, its safety attracts growing attention, particularly with respect to the health risks associated with the wide range of micropollutants found in the reclaimed water. In this study, sophisticated analysis was conducted for water samples from a water reclamation and ecological reuse system where domestic wastewater was treated using an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic unit followed by a membrane bioreactor (A2O-MBR), and the reclaimed water was used for replenishing a landscape lake. A total of 58 organic micropollutants were detected in the system, consisting of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 16 phenols, 3 pesticides, and 26 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). After treatment by the A2O-MBR process, effective removal of pesticides and phenols was achieved, while when the reclaimed water entered the landscape lake, PPCPs were further removed. From the physicochemical properties of micropollutants, it could be inferred that phenols and dichlorphos (the only pesticide with considerable concentration in the influent) would have been mainly removed by biodegradation and/or volatilization in the biological treatment process. Additionally, it is probable that sludge adsorption also contributed to the removal of dichlorphos. For the predominant PPCP removal in the landscape lake, various actions, such as adsorption, biodegradation, photolysis, and ecologically mediated processes (via aquatic plants and animals), would have played significant roles. However, according to their logKoc, logKow and logD (pH = 8) values, it could be concluded that adsorption by suspended solids might be an important action. Although carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks associated with all the detected micropollutants were at negligible levels, the hazard quotients (HQs) of PPCPs accounted for 92.03%–97.23% of the HQTotal. With the significant removal of PPCPs through the ecological processes in the landscape lake, the safety of reclaimed water use could be improved. Therefore, the introduction of ecological unit into the water reclamation and reuse system could be an effective measure for health risk reduction posed by micropollutants

Sufu defines the balance of hindbrain progenitor cells maintenance and differentiation

Suppressor of fused (Sufu) was identified as a regulator in Hedgehog signalling. Study shown that Sufu knockout mice were embryonic lethal at E9.5, exhibiting cephalic deformities, open neural tube and ventralized spinal cord resulting from ectopic Shh signalling, implying indispensable role of Sufu during development of central nervous system. Aiming to investigate the functions of Sufu in hindbrain neurogenesis, we used B2‐r4‐Cre to knock‐out Sufu in rhombomere4 (r4). We observed significant enlargement of mutant r4 size from E10.5, exhibiting more profound expansion in the dorsal region at E12.5. Accordingly, BrdU pulse labelling and sox2 staining showed region specific increased accumulation of proliferative progenitor cells, indicating differential maintenance of progenitor pools along the dorsoventral axis of r4. Tuj1 staining also showed impaired differentiation of the ectopic progenitor cells. Further analysis revealed dramatic dorsal expansion of pMN and p2 progenitor domains in mutant r4. Surprisingly, the FoxA2 positive floor plate, and the dorsal p0 domain were not severely affected, suggesting a novel domain specific regulation of neural progenitor pools by Sufu. Intriguingly, we observed spatial upregulation Gli1 and Gli2 transcription factors, selectively at the region that resides highly proliferative cells, implying that the increased cell proliferation could be caused by the changes of Gli transcription factors. Indeed, concomitant deletion of Gli2 in the Sufu mutant largely rescued the aberrant phenotypes. These findings clearly showed the requirement of Sufu to suppress Gli2 to conduct a domain specific regulation of hindbrain progenitor maintenance and differentiation. Our study demonstrates novel function of Sufu to ensure a tightly controlled progenitor pools maintenance and differentiation, mainly achieve by suppressing Gli2 activation.postprin

Analysis of Sydney’s recycled water schemes

© Higher Education Press and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012. Recycled water provides a viable opportunity to partially supplement fresh water supplies as well as substantially alleviate environmental loads. Currently, thousands of recycled water schemes have been successfully conducted in a number of countries and Sydney is one of the leading cities, which has made massive effort to apply water reclamation, recycling and reuse. This study aims to make a comprehensive analysis of recycled water schemes in Sydney for a wide range of end uses such as landscape irrigation, industrial process uses and residential uses (e.g., golf course irrigation, industrial cooling water reuse, toilet flushing and clothes washing etc.). For each representative recycled water scheme, this study investigates the involved wastewater treatment technologies, the effluent quality compared with specified guideline values and public attitudes toward different end uses. Based on these obtained data, multi criteria analysis (MCA) in terms of risk, cost-benefit, environmental and social aspects can be performed. Consequently, from the analytical results, the good prospects of further expansion and exploration of current and new end uses were identified toward the integrated water planning and management. The analyses could also help decision makers in making a sound judgment for future recycled water projects

Computation diversity in emerging networking paradigms

    Get PDF
Nowadays, computation is playing an increasingly more important role in the future generation of computer and communication networks, as exemplified by the recent progress in SDN for wired networks as well as C-RAN and mobile cloud computing (MCC) for wireless networks. This article proposes a unified concept (i.e., computation diversity) to describe the impact and diverse forms of the computation resources on both wired and wireless communications. By linking the computation resources to the communication networks based on quality of service requirements, we can show how computation resources influence the networks. Moreover, by analyzing the different functionalities of computation resources in SDN, C-RAN, and MCC, we can show the diverse and flexible forms that the computation resources present in different networks. The study of computation diversity can provide guidance in future networks design as far as how to allocate the resources jointly between computation (e.g., CPU capacity) and communication (e.g., bandwidth), thereby saving system energy and improving users' experiences

Thermodynamic entropy of organic oxidation in the water environment: experimental evaluation compared to semi-empirical calculation

© 2016, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. Residual organic matters in the secondary effluent are usually less biodegradable in terms of the total organic carbon content, and when discharged into a receiving water body, their further decomposition most likely mainly occurs due to chemical oxidation. Using this scenario, a semi-empirical method was previously developed to calculate the thermodynamic entropy of organic oxidation to quantitatively evaluate the impact of organic discharge on the water environment. In this study, the relationship between the entropy increase (ΔSC) and excess organic mass (ΔTOC) was experimentally verified via combustion heat measurement using typical organic chemicals and mixtures. For individual organic chemicals, a linear relationship was detected between ΔSC and ΔTOC with the same proportionality coefficient, 54.0 kJ/g, determined in the previous semi-empirical relationship. For the organic mixtures, a linear relationship was also identified; however, the proportionality coefficient was 69.2 kJ/g, indicating an approximately 28 % increase in the oxidation heat required to decompose the same organic mass. This increase in energy can likely be attributed to the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions, π–π interactions, and van der Waals interactions between functional groups of different organic compounds. Intermolecular interactions may result in 17–32 % more dissociation energy for organic mixtures compared to the organic components’ chemical structures. Because organics discharged into a water body are always a mixture of organic compounds, the proportionality coefficient obtained using organic mixtures should be adopted to modify the previously proposed semi-empirical equation

A new step aeration approach towards the improvement of nitrogen removal in a full scale Carrousel oxidation ditch

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Two aeration modes, step aeration and point aeration, were used in a full-scale Carrousel oxidation ditch with microporous aeration. The nitrogen removal performance and mechanism were analyzed. With the same total aeration input, both aeration modes demonstrated good nitrification outcomes with the average efficiency in removing NH4+-N of more than 98%. However, the average removal efficiencies for total nitrogen were 89.3% and 77.6% under step aeration and point aeration, respectively. The results indicated that an extended aerobic zone followed the aeration zones could affect the proportion of anoxic and oxic zones. The step aeration with larger anoxic zones indicated better TN removal efficiency. More importantly, step aeration provided the suitable environment for both nitrifiers and denitrifiers. The diversity and relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria under the step aeration (1.55%) was higher than that under the point aeration (1.12%), which resulted in an overall higher TN removal efficiency

Functional evaluation of pollutant transformation in sediment from combined sewer system

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd In this study, a pilot combined sewer system was constructed to characterize the pollutant transformation in sewer sediment. The results showed that particulate contaminants deposited from sewage could be transformed into dissolved matter by distinct pollutant transformation pathways. Although the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was varied from −80 mV to −340 mV in different region of the sediment, the fermentation was the dominant process in all regions of the sediment, which induced hydrolysis and decomposition of particulate contaminants. As a result, the accumulation of dissolved organic matter and the variation of ORP values along the sediment depth led to the depth-dependent reproduction characteristics of methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria, which were existed in the middle and deep layer of the sediment respectively. However, the diversity of nitrifying and polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria was low in sewer sediment and those microbial communities showed a non-significant correlation with nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants, which indicated that the enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus contaminants was mainly caused by physical deposition process. Thus, this study proposed a promising pathway to evaluate pollutant transformation and can help provide theoretical foundation for urban sewer improvement
