Coordinate Singularities in Harmonically-sliced Cosmologies
Harmonic slicing has in recent years become a standard way of prescribing the
lapse function in numerical simulations of general relativity. However, as was
first noticed by Alcubierre (1997), numerical solutions generated using this
slicing condition can show pathological behaviour. In this paper, analytic and
numerical methods are used to examine harmonic slicings of Kasner and Gowdy
cosmological spacetimes. It is shown that in general the slicings are prevented
from covering the whole of the spacetimes by the appearance of coordinate
singularities. As well as limiting the maximum running times of numerical
simulations, the coordinate singularities can lead to features being produced
in numerically evolved solutions which must be distinguished from genuine
physical effects.Comment: 21 pages, REVTeX, 5 figure
New explicit spike solution -- non-local component of the generalized Mixmaster attractor
By applying a standard solution-generating transformation to an arbitrary
vacuum Bianchi type II solution, one generates a new solution with spikes
commonly observed in numerical simulations. It is conjectured that the spike
solution is part of the generalized Mixmaster attractor.Comment: Significantly revised. Colour figures simplified to accommodate

The Gowdy T3 Cosmologies revisited
We have examined, repeated and extended earlier numerical calculations of
Berger and Moncrief for the evolution of unpolarized Gowdy T3 cosmological
models. Our results are consistent with theirs and we support their claim that
the models exhibit AVTD behaviour, even though spatial derivatives cannot be
neglected. The behaviour of the curvature invariants and the formation of
structure through evolution both backwards and forwards in time is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, 6 figures, results and conclusions revised and

Locally U(1)*U(1) Symmetric Cosmological Models: Topology and Dynamics
We show examples which reveal influences of spatial topologies to dynamics,
using a class of spatially {\it closed} inhomogeneous cosmological models. The
models, called the {\it locally U(1)U(1) symmetric models} (or the {\it
generalized Gowdy models}), are characterized by the existence of two commuting
spatial {\it local} Killing vectors. For systematic investigations we first
present a classification of possible spatial topologies in this class. We
stress the significance of the locally homogeneous limits (i.e., the Bianchi
types or the `geometric structures') of the models. In particular, we show a
method of reduction to the natural reduced manifold, and analyze the
equivalences at the reduced level of the models as dynamical models. Based on
these fundamentals, we examine the influence of spatial topologies on dynamics
by obtaining translation and reflection operators which commute with the
dynamical flow in the phase space.Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX2e, revised Introduction slightly. To appear

Adjusted ADM systems and their expected stability properties: constraint propagation analysis in Schwarzschild spacetime
In order to find a way to have a better formulation for numerical evolution
of the Einstein equations, we study the propagation equations of the
constraints based on the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formulation. By adjusting
constraint terms in the evolution equations, we try to construct an
"asymptotically constrained system" which is expected to be robust against
violation of the constraints, and to enable a long-term stable and accurate
numerical simulation. We first provide useful expressions for analyzing
constraint propagation in a general spacetime, then apply it to Schwarzschild
spacetime. We search when and where the negative real or non-zero imaginary
eigenvalues of the homogenized constraint propagation matrix appear, and how
they depend on the choice of coordinate system and adjustments. Our analysis
includes the proposal of Detweiler (1987), which is still the best one
according to our conjecture but has a growing mode of error near the horizon.
Some examples are snapshots of a maximally sliced Schwarzschild black hole. The
predictions here may help the community to make further improvements.Comment: 23 pages, RevTeX4, many figures. Revised version. Added subtitle,

A detailed look at the most obscured galactic nuclei in the mid-infrared
Context. Compact obscured nuclei (CONs) represent an extreme phase of galaxy evolution where rapid supermassive black hole growth and/or compact star-forming activity is completely obscured by gas and dust. Aims. We investigate the properties of CONs in the mid-infrared and explore techniques aimed at identifying these objects, such as through the equivalent width (EW) ratios of their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features. Methods. We modelled Spitzer spectra by decomposing the continua into nuclear and star-forming components, from which we then measured the nuclear optical depth, Ď„N, of the 9.8 ÎĽm silicate absorption feature. We also used Spitzer spectral maps to investigate how PAH EW ratios vary with aperture size for objects that host CONs. Results. We find that the nuclear optical depth, Ď„N, strongly correlates with the HCN-vib emission line in the millimetre for CONs, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.91. We find the PAH EW ratio technique to be effective at selecting CONs and robust against highly inclined galaxies, where strong dust lanes may mimic a CON-like spectrum by producing a high Ď„N. Our analysis of the Spitzer spectral maps shows that the efficacy of the PAH EW ratios in isolating CONs is reduced when there is a strong starforming component from the host galaxy. In addition, we find that the use of the inferred nuclear optical depth is a reliable method for identifying CONs in 36+8-7% of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and 17+3-3% of luminous infrared galaxies, consistent with previous work. Conclusions. We confirm mid-infrared spectra to be a powerful diagnostic of CONs. The increased sensitivity of JWST will allow the identification of CONs at cosmic noon, revealing this extreme but hidden phase of galaxy evolution
Influence of electron correlations on ground-state properties of III-V semiconductors
Lattice constants and bulk moduli of eleven cubic III-V semiconductors are
calculated using an ab initio scheme. Correlation contributions of the valence
electrons, in particular, are determined using increments for localized bonds
and for pairs and triples of such bonds; individual increments, in turn, are
evaluated using the coupled cluster approach with single and double
excitations. Core-valence correlation is taken into account by means of a core
polarization potential. Combining the results at the correlated level with
corresponding Hartree-Fock data, we obtain lattice constants which agree with
experiment within an average error of -0.2%; bulk moduli are accurate to +4%.
We discuss in detail the influence of the various correlation contributions on
lattice constants and bulk moduli.Comment: 4 pages, Latex, no figures, Phys. Rev. B, accepte
Holonomy from wrapped branes
Compactifications of M-theory on manifolds with reduced holonomy arise as the
local eleven-dimensional description of D6-branes wrapped on supersymmetric
cycles in manifolds of lower dimension with a different holonomy group.
Whenever the isometry group SU(2) is present, eight-dimensional gauged
supergravity is a natural arena for such investigations. In this paper we use
this approach and review the eleven dimensional description of D6-branes
wrapped on coassociative 4-cycles, on deformed 3-cycles inside Calabi-Yau
threefolds and on Kahler 4-cycles.Comment: 1+8 pages, Latex. Proceedings of the Leuven workshop, 2002. v2:

G1 Cosmologies with Gravitational and Scalar Waves
I present here a new algorithm to generate families of inhomogeneous massless
scalar field cosmologies. New spacetimes, having a single isometry, are
generated by breaking the homogeneity of massless scalar field models
along one direction. As an illustration of the technique I construct
cosmological models which in their late time limit represent perturbations in
the form of gravitational and scalar waves propagating on a non-static
inhomogeneous background. Several features of the obtained metrics are
discussed, such as their early and late time limits, structure of singularities
and physical interpretation.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figure
