Investigating the timecourse of accessing conversational implicatures during incremental sentence interpretation
Many contextual inferences in utterance interpretation are explained as following from the nature of conversation and the assumption that participants are rational. Recent psycholinguistic research has focussed on certain of these ‘Gricean’ inferences and have revealed that comprehenders can access them in online interpretation. However there have been mixed results as to the time-course of access. Some results show that Gricean inferences can be accessed very rapidly, as rapidly as any other contextually specified information (Sedivy, 2003; Grodner, Klein, Carbery, & Tanenhaus, 2010); while other studies looking at the same kind of inference suggest that access to Gricean inferences are delayed relative to other aspects of semantic interpretation (Huang & Snedeker, 2009; in press). While previous timecourse research has focussed on Gricean inferences that support the online assignment of reference to definite expressions, the study reported here examines the timecourse of access to scalar implicatures, which enrich the meaning of an utterance beyond the semantic interpretation. Even if access to Gricean inference in support of reference assignment may be rapid, it is still unknown whether genuinely enriching scalar implicatures are delayed. Our results indicate that scalar implicatures are accessed as rapidly as other contextual inferences. The implications of our results are discussed in reference to the architecture of language comprehension
Lignin dynamics in two13C-labelled arable soils during 18 years
Lignin has long been considered a relatively stable component of soil organic matter. However, recent studies suggest that lignin may turn over within years to decades in
arable soil. Here we analyzed lignin concentrations in an 18 year field experiment under continuous silage maize where two soils were sampled at six points in time. Our
objectives were to examine the long-term dynamics of (i) lignin derived from a previous C3-vegetation and (ii) lignin derived from maize, as influenced by two levels
of maize biomass input. Total lignin concentrations in soil were quantified by gas chromatography of lignin cupric oxide oxidation products. Compound-specific 13C isotope analysis allowed discrimination between C3-derived lignin and maize-derived lignin. Degradation dynamics of C3-derived lignin were independent of biomass input
level, suggesting that priming did not affect soil lignin concentrations over almost two decades. After 18 years approximately two thirds of the initial C3-derived lignin
remained in the soils, whereas, on average, 10 % of the recent maize-derived lignin input was retained. We suggest that lignin is effectively stabilized in these arable
soils, although the mechanisms involved remain unclear
A tunable macroscopic quantum system based on two fractional vortices
We propose a tunable macroscopic quantum system based on two fractional
vortices. Our analysis shows that two coupled fractional vortices pinned at two
artificially created \kappa\ discontinuities of the Josephson phase in a long
Josephson junction can reach the quantum regime where coherent quantum
oscillations arise. For this purpose we map the dynamics of this system to that
of a single particle in a double-well potential. By tuning the \kappa\
discontinuities with injector currents we are able to control the parameters of
the effective double-well potential as well as to prepare a desired state of
the fractional vortex molecule. The values of the parameters derived from this
model suggest that an experimental realisation of this tunable macroscopic
quantum system is possible with today's technology.Comment: We updated our manuscript due to a change of the focus from qubit to

Breit Hamiltonian and QED Effects for Spinless Particles
We describe a simplified derivation for the relativistic corrections of order
for a bound system consisting of two spinless particles. We devote
special attention to pionium, the bound system of two oppositely charged pions.
The leading quantum electrodynamic (QED) correction to the energy levels is of
the order of and due to electronic vacuum polarization. We analyze
further corrections due to the self-energy of the pions, and due to recoil
effects, and we give a complete result for the scalar-QED leading logarithmic
corrections which are due to virtual loops involving only the scalar

Lena Delta hydrology and geochemistry: long-term hydrological data and recent field observations
The Lena River forms one of the largest deltas in the Arctic. We compare two sets of data to reveal new insights into the hydrological, hydrochemical, and geochemical processes within the delta: (i) long-term hydrometric observations at the Khabarova station at the head of the delta from 1951 to 2005; (ii) field hydrological and geochemical observations carried out within the delta since 2002. Periods with differing relative discharge and intensity of fluvial processes were identified from the long-term record of water and sediment discharge. Ice events during spring melt (high water) reconfigured branch channels and probably influenced sediment transport within the delta. Based on summer field measurements during 2005–2012 of discharge and sediment fluxes along main delta channels, both are increased between the apex and the front of the delta. This increase is to a great extent connected with an additional influx of water from tributaries, as well as an increase of suspended and dissolved material released from the ice complex. Summer concentrations of major ion and biogenic substances along the delta branches are partly explained by water sources within the delta, such as thawing ice complex waters, small Lena River branches and estuarine areas
First measurements of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction
This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction.
Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy
and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution
was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not
good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on
missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of
states in the residual nucleus. Theoretical calculations of the reaction using
the Pavia code do not reproduce the shape or the magnitude of the data.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in EPJ
Institutions in transition: Is the EU integration process relevant for inward FDI in transition European economies?
This research challenges the contemporary view of economic policy makers in transition European economies that the EU integration process will lead to a greater inflow of Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), thereby increasing living standards. With the Brexit referendum, the integration of the EU has been threatened by a distressing existential question: is EU membership valuable for transition countries if even developed countries (like the UK) vote to leave or decided not to align like Switzerland and Norway in the past? Our analysis considers the success of several countries in Eastern Europe in attracting and benefiting from FDI on their way to EU membership. Analyzing a 13-year panel data of 16 transition countries, we found no statistically significant positive association between FDI inflow and EU accession. We argue, that it is also important to consider the welfare for domestic economies that can emerge from those investments. We illustrate this through the case study of a successful combination of institutional development and local content policies implementation accompanied by sufficient FDI inflows in a non-EU country - Kazakhstan
A non-uniform semantic analysis of the Italian temporal connectives Prima and Dopo
In this paper, I argue that the temporal connective prima ('before') is a comparative adverb. The argument is based on a number of grammatical facts from Italian, showing that there is an asymmetry between prima and dopo ('after'). On the ground of their divergent behaviour, I suggest that dopo has a different grammatical status from prima. I propose a semantic treatment for prima that is based on an independently motivated analysis of comparatives which can be traced back to Seuren (1973). Dopo is analyzed instead as an atomic two-place predicate which contributes a binary relation over events to the sentence meaning. The different semantic treatments of the two connectives provide an explanation for the grammatical asymmetries considered at the outset; interestingly, it also sheds some light on other asymmetries between prima and dopo which are known to hold for the English temporal connectives before and after as well: these asymmetries are related to the veridicality properties, the distribution of NPIs, and the logical properties of these connectives first described in Anscombe (1964)
Evaluational adjectives
This paper demarcates a theoretically interesting class of "evaluational adjectives." This class includes predicates expressing various kinds of normative and epistemic evaluation, such as predicates of personal taste, aesthetic adjectives, moral adjectives, and epistemic adjectives, among others. Evaluational adjectives are distinguished, empirically, in exhibiting phenomena such as discourse-oriented use, felicitous embedding under the attitude verb `find', and sorites-susceptibility in the comparative form. A unified degree-based semantics is developed: What distinguishes evaluational adjectives, semantically, is that they denote context-dependent measure functions ("evaluational perspectives")—context-dependent mappings to degrees of taste, beauty, probability, etc., depending on the adjective. This perspective-sensitivity characterizing the class of evaluational adjectives cannot be assimilated to vagueness, sensitivity to an experiencer argument, or multidimensionality; and it cannot be demarcated in terms of pretheoretic notions of subjectivity, common in the literature. I propose that certain diagnostics for "subjective" expressions be analyzed instead in terms of a precisely specified kind of discourse-oriented use of context-sensitive language.
