Partially reconfigurable TVWS transceiver for use in UK and US markets
With more and more countries opening up sections of unlicensed spectrum for use by TV White Space (TVWS) devices, the prospect of building a device capable of operating in more than one world region is appealing. The difficulty is that the locations of TVWS bands within the radio spectrum are not globally harmonised. With this problem in mind, the purpose of this paper is to present a TVWS transceiver design which is capable of being reconfigured to operate in both the UK and US spectrum. We present three different configurations: one covering the UK TVWS spectrum and the remaining two covering the various locations of the US TVWS bands
Developing Individual Dynamic Capabilities by Social Media: A empirical Investigation
Nowadays, we are in the midst of another social-technical revolution stimulated by the interaction between the human desire for efficiency and connectivity. During such revolution, the pace of life and work are becoming increasingly fast and usually erratic. Therefore, people are required to be more responsive and effective in dealing with changes happening in their lives. Social media are the predominant online offerings created in such revolution for fulfilling people’s needs of shaping social relationships. Besides serving users’ socialization purposes, social media have also rapidly changed the way individuals interact with others and even the way of learning, thinking and working. With the comprehensive use of various social media, individuals can perform information processing (e.g., information acquisition, assimilation and sharing) and external representation (e.g., shaping relationship, coordination and conflicts solution) more easily and frequently, which may further help them to develop their personal capabilities in dealing with changeable environments. However, there is limited research and empirical evidence regarding the bright sides of the diverse use of social media on the development of users’ individual capabilities in coping with dynamic environmental changes. Drawing upon the theories of media system dependency, boundary spanning and dynamic capability, this study thereby proposes that the comprehensive use of social media can be transformed into an individual’s dynamic capabilities through two important mechanisms: information processing and external representation. This study contributes to the literature by revealing how individuals can better deal with changing environments in the social media era and establishing the conceptualization and operationalization of individual dynamic capabilities
Representing Marginalized Populations: Challenges in Anthropographics
Anthropographics are human-shaped visualizations that have primarily been
used within visualization research and data journalism to show humanitarian and
demographic data. However, anthropographics have typically been produced by a
small group of designers, researchers, and journalists, and most use
homogeneous representations of marginalized populations-representations that
might have problematic implications for how viewers perceive the people they
represent. In this paper, we use a critical lens to examine anthropographic
visualization practices in projects about marginalized populations. We present
critiques that identify three potential challenges related to the use of
anthropographics and highlight possible unintended consequences-namely (1)
creating homogeneous depictions of marginalized populations, (2) treating
marginalization as an inclusion criteria, and (3) insufficiently
contextualizing datasets about marginalization. Finally, we highlight
opportunities for anthropographics research, including the need to develop
techniques for representing demographic differences between marginalized
populations and for studies exploring other potential effects of
anthropographics

The Human Behind the Data: Reflections from an Ongoing Co-Design and Deployment of a Data-Navigation Interface for Front-Line Emergency Housing Shelter Staff
On any night in Canada, at least 35,000 individuals experience homelessness.
These individuals use emergency shelters to transition out of homelessness and
into permanent housing. We designed and deployed a technology to support
front-line staff at the largest emergency housing shelter in Calgary, Canada.
Over a period of five months in 2022, we worked closely with front-line staff
to co-design an interface for supporting a holistic understanding of client
context and facilitating decision-making. The tool is currently in-use and our
collaboration is ongoing. In this paper, we reflect on preliminary findings
regarding the second iteration of the tool. We find that supporting shelter
staff in understanding the human behind the data was a critical component of
design. This work contributes to literature on how data tools may be integrated
into homeless shelters in a way that aligns with shelters' values.Comment: 7 page
