    KEGG for representation and analysis of molecular networks involving diseases and drugs

    Most human diseases are complex multi-factorial diseases resulting from the combination of various genetic and environmental factors. In the KEGG database resource (http://www.genome.jp/kegg/), diseases are viewed as perturbed states of the molecular system, and drugs as perturbants to the molecular system. Disease information is computerized in two forms: pathway maps and gene/molecule lists. The KEGG PATHWAY database contains pathway maps for the molecular systems in both normal and perturbed states. In the KEGG DISEASE database, each disease is represented by a list of known disease genes, any known environmental factors at the molecular level, diagnostic markers and therapeutic drugs, which may reflect the underlying molecular system. The KEGG DRUG database contains chemical structures and/or chemical components of all drugs in Japan, including crude drugs and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) formulas, and drugs in the USA and Europe. This database also captures knowledge about two types of molecular networks: the interaction network with target molecules, metabolizing enzymes, other drugs, etc. and the chemical structure transformation network in the history of drug development. The new disease/drug information resource named KEGG MEDICUS can be used as a reference knowledge base for computational analysis of molecular networks, especially, by integrating large-scale experimental datasets

    RacGAP α2-Chimaerin Function in Development Adjusts Cognitive Ability in Adulthood

    SummaryA major concern in neuroscience is how cognitive ability in adulthood is affected and regulated by developmental mechanisms. The molecular bases of cognitive development are not well understood. We provide evidence for the involvement of the α2 isoform of Rac-specific guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase)-activating protein (RacGAP) α-chimaerin (chimerin) in this process. We generated and analyzed mice with global and conditional knockouts of α-chimaerin and its isoforms (α1-chimaerin and α2-chimaerin) and found that α-chimaerin plays a wide variety of roles in brain function and that the roles of α1-chimaerin and α2-chimaerin are distinct. Deletion of α2-chimaerin, but not α1-chimaerin, beginning during early development results in an increase in contextual fear learning in adult mice, whereas learning is not altered when α2-chimaerin is deleted only in adulthood. Our findings suggest that α2-chimaerin acts during development to establish normal cognitive ability in adulthood

    コミュニケーション力養成に関する調査

    大学生に必要な能力として高く要求されているものに,コミュニケーション力がある。現在,この力を養成するためのアクティブ・ラーニングを中心とした授業を行っている。この中でコミュニケーション力が養成されているかを検証するため,コミュニケーション力の測定を授業初回と最終回に実施した。この測定では,「小グループ」,「集会」,「会話」,「スピーチ」の場面についての測定を行った。これに加えて,学生の授業の振り返りを検討し,授業をとおして効果的にコミュニケーション力が養成されているのかについて,検証した。この結果,コミュニケーションについてのそれぞれの場面での感じ方は,個人差があることが明らかになった。また,コミュニケーションに関する苦手意識があっても,コミュニケーション行動はできていることが,明らかになった。Communication skills are considered to be very important for university students. The measurement of communication skills was conducted at the first and the last lessons of a communication skills enhancement course using an active learning approach, in order to assess its effectiveness. The measurement included four aspects, namely, small group activity, meeting, conversation, and speech. In addition, the students\u27 reflection sheets were analyzed to determine whether their communication abilities were improved through the course. The results show that perceptions on communication in each of the above-mentioned aspects vary between individuals. It is also suggested that communicative actions can be taken, even when challenged by negative attitudes towards communication

    A study of collaboration between staff and physicians involved in prosthetic limb production

     本研究では,医学生が多職種連携を考える上で,義肢装具士との連携においてはどのようなことが必要であるかを調査・検討した。調査の結果,調査対象とした義肢装具士46名中,医師との連携で困っていると答えた人数は16名(35.6%)であった。アンケートとインタビューの内容から,患者,医師,義肢装具士の三者間の連携不足があることが明らかになった。これによって,義肢装具士が現場で抱える問題として,①医師との情報交換の頻度の少なさ,②義肢装具使用者の装着後のメンテナンスなどができていないなどの問題が挙げられた。また,医学生として学ぶべきことは,患者のQOLのために,患者だけでなく義肢装具士など他の職種とのコミュニケーションが重要であること,さらに,義肢装具士などの他の専門職種について医師が知らない領域があるということを認識し,積極的な情報共有の必要性を理解することである。以上のことから,医師の卒前または卒後教育の中で義肢装具に関する知識・技術の習得とともに,義肢装具士がチーム医療には必要であること,病院においては義肢装具士もカンファレンスに参加できる環境作りが急務であると考える。 This study conducted a survey to examine what medical students should consider in partnerships with prosthetists/orthotists from the perspective of interprofessional collaboration.The results of the survey revealed that 16 out of 46 prosthetists/orthotists, or 36%, surveyed said they had trouble working with physicians. The questionnaire and interviews revealed that there was a lack of collaboration among patients, doctors and prosthetists/orthotists. This led to problems faced by prosthetists/orthotists in their field, such as infrequent exchanges with physicians and poor maintenance by prosthetic users after fitting. It also indicated that what we as medical students must learn for better patient QOL is that communication not only with patients but also with other professionals such as prosthetists/orthotists is very important. Furthermore, we need to be aware that there are many other professional areas we know little about and understand that there is a need for positive information sharing. Based on the above, we realize that, in addition to acquiring the knowledge and skills related to prosthetic devices as part of the pre- and post-graduate education of physicians, we should also recognize that prosthetists/orthotists are an important part of team medicine and that there is an urgent need for hospitals to create an environment in which prosthetists/orthotists can participate in clinical team conferences

    川崎医療短期大学における語彙力に関する調査

    本稿は,川崎医療短期大学の在学生の語彙力に関する調査結果を報告することを目的とする.2007年度入学生の追跡調査結果では,中学生レベルの語彙力のまま卒業を迎える学生がいることが明らかになった.さらに,入学から1年後は語彙力が伸びるが,2年次以降は語彙力が伸びる学生と伸びない学生の差が顕著であることが明らかになった.今後の課題として,語彙力を継続的に高めていくための方策を検討することが挙げられる
