Systematic and variational truncation of the configuration space in the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method: The MCTDH[n] hierarchy
The multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method is a powerful method for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in quantum molecular dynamics. It is, however, hampered by the so-called curse of dimensionality which results in exponential scaling
with respect to the number of degrees of freedom in the system and, thus, limits its applicability to small- and medium-sized molecules. To
avoid this scaling, we derive equations of motion for a series of truncated MCTDH methods using a many-mode second-quantization formulation where the configuration space is restricted based on mode-combination levels as also done in the vibrational configuration interaction
and vibrational coupled cluster methods for solving the time-independent Schrödinger equation. The full MCTDH wave function is invariant
with respect to the choice of constraint (or gauge) operators, but restricting the configuration space removes this invariance. We, thus, analyze
the remaining redundancies and derive equations for variationally optimizing the non-redundant matrix elements of the constraint operators.
As an alternative, we also present a constraint that keeps the density matrices block diagonal during the propagation and the two choices are
compared. Example calculations are performed on formyl fluoride and a series of high-dimensional Henon–Heiles potentials. The results
show that the MCTDH[n] methods can be applied to large systems and that an optimal choice of constraint operators is key to obtaining the
correct physical behavior of the wave function
Increased Hepatitis E Virus Seroprevalence Correlates with Lower CD4+Cell Counts in HIV-Infected Persons in Argentina
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a single-stranded RNA virus that can cause hepatitis in an epidemic fashion. HEV usually causes asymptomatic or limited acute infections in immunocompetent individuals, whereas in immunosuppressed individuals such as transplant recipients, HEV can cause chronic infections. The risks and outcomes of HEV co-infection in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are poorly characterized. We used a third generation immunoassay to measure serum IgG antibodies specific for HEV in 204 HIV-infected individuals from Argentina and a control group of 433 HIV-negative individuals. We found 15 of 204 (7.3%, 95% CI 3.74-10.96%) individuals in the HIV-positive group to have positive HEV IgG levels suggestive of previous infection, compared to 19 of 433 (4.4%, 95% CI 2.5-6.3%) individuals in the HIV-negative control group (p = 0.12). Among HIV-positive individuals, those with HEV seropositivity had lower CD4 counts compared to those that were HEV seronegative (average CD4 count of 234 vs 422 mm(3), p = 0.01), indicating that patients with lower CD4 counts were more likely to be HEV IgG positive. Moreover, HEV seropositivity in patients with CD4 counts <200 mm(3) was 16%, compared to 4.5% in those with CD4 counts >200 mm(3) (p = 0.012). We found a positive PCR result for HEV in one individual. Our study found that increased seroprevalence of HEV IgG correlated with lower CD4 counts in HIV-infected patients in Argentina

Orchestrating ongoing interaction flows of strategy formation in and between meetings
Research has addressed how the practices and organization of strategy meetings shape strategy processes and outcomes. However, how interactive processes run between and feed into meetings—an integral aspect of how managers shape ongoing strategy emergence—remains relatively poorly understood. Through a strong processual-interactionist approach, we thus examine how in- and between-meeting practices interact and create combined effects in orchestrating ongoing flows of strategy formation. By considering strategy meetings as part of and punctuating chain-like, interactive processes of strategy formation, we develop an understanding of how in- and between-meeting practices dynamically interact—they enable, balance the effects of, and shape one another through the interaction flows in which they are engaged. The longitudinal case study reveals and explains the role of cross-over effects and coalescing between multiple simultaneous interaction flows, thereby advancing extant research on how series of interaction sequences shape strategy emergence and evolution
How a Diverse Research Ecosystem Has Generated New Rehabilitation Technologies: Review of NIDILRR’s Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers
Over 50 million United States citizens (1 in 6 people in the US) have a developmental, acquired, or degenerative disability. The average US citizen can expect to live 20% of his or her life with a disability. Rehabilitation technologies play a major role in improving the quality of life for people with a disability, yet widespread and highly challenging needs remain. Within the US, a major effort aimed at the creation and evaluation of rehabilitation technology has been the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers (RERCs) sponsored by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. As envisioned at their conception by a panel of the National Academy of Science in 1970, these centers were intended to take a “total approach to rehabilitation”, combining medicine, engineering, and related science, to improve the quality of life of individuals with a disability. Here, we review the scope, achievements, and ongoing projects of an unbiased sample of 19 currently active or recently terminated RERCs. Specifically, for each center, we briefly explain the needs it targets, summarize key historical advances, identify emerging innovations, and consider future directions. Our assessment from this review is that the RERC program indeed involves a multidisciplinary approach, with 36 professional fields involved, although 70% of research and development staff are in engineering fields, 23% in clinical fields, and only 7% in basic science fields; significantly, 11% of the professional staff have a disability related to their research. We observe that the RERC program has substantially diversified the scope of its work since the 1970’s, addressing more types of disabilities using more technologies, and, in particular, often now focusing on information technologies. RERC work also now often views users as integrated into an interdependent society through technologies that both people with and without disabilities co-use (such as the internet, wireless communication, and architecture). In addition, RERC research has evolved to view users as able at improving outcomes through learning, exercise, and plasticity (rather than being static), which can be optimally timed. We provide examples of rehabilitation technology innovation produced by the RERCs that illustrate this increasingly diversifying scope and evolving perspective. We conclude by discussing growth opportunities and possible future directions of the RERC program

Structural mass spectrometry decodes domain interaction and dynamics of the full-length Human Histone Deacetylase 2
Human Histone Deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) belongs to a conserved enzyme superfamily that regulates deacetylation inside cells. HDAC2 is a drug target as it is known to be upregulated in cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. It consists of a globular deacetylase and C-terminus intrinsically-disordered domains [1-3]. To date, there is no full-length structure of HDAC2 available due to the high intrinsic flexibility of its C-terminal domain. The intrinsically-disordered domain, however, is known to be important for the enzymatic function of HDAC2 [1, 4]. Here we combine several structural Mass Spectrometry (MS) methodologies such as denaturing, native, ion mobility and chemical crosslinking, alongside biochemical assays and molecular modelling to study the structure and dynamics of the full-length HDAC2 for the first time. We show that MS can easily dissect heterogeneity inherent within the protein sample and at the same time probe the structural arrangement of the different conformers present. Activity assays combined with data from MS and molecular modelling suggest how the structural dynamics of the C-terminal domain, and its interactions with the catalytic domain, regulate the activity of this enzyme

Leveraging accessible tourism development through mega-events, and the disability-attitude gap
Able-bodied, and increasingly people with disabilities, represent a key audience for mega-events; occasions that act as crucibles where social problems endemic to host destinations can be exposed and tackled through targeted social policy. Drawing on the social model of disability, the paper examines how Japan utilised Tokyo 2020 as a field configuring event to disrupt systems of ableist thinking and tackle physical and attitudinal barriers restricting Persons with Disabilities (PwD) to accessible tourism. Qualitative evidence reveals national commitments to relegitimise, improve accessibility for - and acceptance toward - PwD in Japanese society, through transformations to the built environment, national awareness, and educational campaigns in the build up to Tokyo 2020. An over-emphasis on physical as opposed to social structural change mean negative attitudes often persist, where disability remains stigmatised, leading to PwD immobility and social exclusion. Our policy recommendations and managerial implications, alongside research directions attend to this disability-attitude gap
