Thermo-hydro-mechanical responses of the host rock in the context of geological nuclear waste disposal

Deep geological disposal facility has been considered as the most appropriated solution for the safe longterm management of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). Geologic disposal solution consists of isolating the radioactive waste from the biosphere. Argillaceous rock has been selected in several countries as host formation due to its favorable properties to isolate radionuclides and chemical contaminants (very low permeability, stable, high retention capacity, self-sealing, etc). Clays in their natural state is usually saturated. Disposal of the exothermic waste packages in the repository leads to an increase in temperature within the host rock, which induces the pore pressure build-up due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the pore water and the solid skeleton. The excess pore pressure generally leads to a decrease in the effective stress and can provoke thermally hydraulic fracturing or shear failure. Therefore, understanding the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) responses of the saturated host rock due to the heat generated form waste packages is a key issue to assess the feasibility of the repository. This paper aims at presenting coupled THM constitutive equations for a saturated porous medium and its finite element (FEM) discretization and solution. The solution is validated against analytical solution and other numerical results from a benchmark within an international project. FEM program is then used to describe the THM behavior of the host rock around a HLW repository (i.e. near field responses). Sensitivity analysis were performed to evaluate effect of material anisotropy and hydraulic condition on the micro-tunnel wall

Forecasting household packaging waste generation : a case study

Nowadays, house packaging waste (HPW) materials acquired a great deal of importance, due to environmental and economic reasons, and therefore waste collection companies place thousands of collection points (ecopontos) for people to deposit their HPW. In order to optimize HPW collection process, accurate forecasts of the waste generation rates are needed. Our objective is to develop forecasting models to predict the number of collections per year required for each ecoponto by evaluating the relevance of ten proposed explanatory factors for HPW generation. We developed models based on two approaches: multiple linear regression and artificial neural networks (ANN).The results obtained show that the best ANN model, which achieved an R 2 of 0.672 and MAD of 9.1, slightly outperforms the best regression model (R 2 of 0.636, MAD of 10.44). The most important factors to estimate HPW generation rates are related to ecoponto characteristics and to the population and economic activities around each ecoponto location.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

Study on N-NH4+ removal from underground water by MBBR case study in Bach Khoa Ward, Hanoi, Vietnam

Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) using porous carrier plastic material, Polyurethane (DHY-1) which has high porosity 92% -96%, has been researched and applied in many water treatment systems. The advantage of the material is that it has high surface area of about 6,000-12,000m2/m3 thereby increasing the density of biomass. In this research, they were tried to treat ammonium nitrogen (N-NH4+) in the ground water. It was found that the treatment efficiency was more than 90% with N-NH4+ concentration of 10-12mg/l. Different densities of carrier materials as well as different influent flow rates have significant impacts on the removal efficiency. The study showed that treatment capacity decreased with high influent flow rate while increased with high density of carrier materials

Nature of phase transition in magnetic thin films

We study the critical behavior of magnetic thin films as a function of the film thickness. We use the ferromagnetic Ising model with the high-resolution multiple histogram Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. We show that though the 2D behavior remains dominant at small thicknesses, there is a systematic continuous deviation of the critical exponents from their 2D values. We observe that in the same range of varying thickness the deviation of the exponent ν\nu is very small from its 2D value, while exponent β\beta suffers a larger deviation. Moreover, as long as the film thickness is fixed, i. e. no finite size scaling is done in the zz direction perpendicular to the film, the 3D values of the critical exponents cannot be attained even with very large (but fixed) thickness. The crossover to 3D universality class cannot therefore take place without finite size scaling applied in the zz direction, in the limit of numerically accessible thicknesses. From values of exponent α\alpha obtained by MC, we estimate the effective dimension of the system. We conclude that with regard to the critical behavior, thin films behave as systems with effective dimension between 2 and 3.Comment: 8 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

The s230r integrase substitution associated with virus load rebound during dolutegravir monotherapy confers low-level resistance to integrase str

Background. Dolutegravir (DTG) is an integrase strand-transfer inhibitor (INSTI) used for treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected individuals. Owing to its high genetic barrier to resistance, DTG has been clinically investigated as maintenance monotherapy to maintain viral suppression and to reduce complication and healthcare costs. Our study aims to explain the underlying mechanism related to the emergence of a S230R substitution in patients who experienced virologic failure while using DTG monotherapy. Methods. We evaluated the effect of the S230R substitution in regard to integrase enzyme activity, viral infectivity, replicative capacity, and susceptibility to different INSTIs by biochemical and cell-based assays. Results. The S230R substitution conferred a 63% reduction in enzyme efficiency. S230R virus was 1.29-fold less infectious than wild-type virus but could replicate in PM1 cells without significant delay. Resistance levels against DTG, cabotegravir, raltegravir, and elvitegravir in tissue culture were 3.85-, 3.72-, 1.52-, and 1.21-fold, respectively, in virus with the S230R substitution. Conclusions. Our data indicate that the S230R substitution is comparable to the previously reported R263K substitution in some respects. Virologic failure during DTG monotherapy can occur through the development of the S230R or R263K mutation, without the need for high-level DTG resistance

Global trends of hand and wrist trauma: A systematic analysis of fracture and digit amputation using the Global Burden of Disease 2017 Study

Background: As global rates of mortality decrease, rates of non-fatal injury have increased, particularly in low Socio-demographic Index (SDI) nations. We hypothesised this global pattern of non-fatal injury would be demonstrated in regard to bony hand and wrist trauma over the 27-year study period. Methods: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 was used to estimate prevalence, age-standardised incidence and years lived with disability for hand trauma in 195 countries from 1990 to 2017. Individual injuries included hand and wrist fractures, thumb amputations and non-thumb digit amputations. Results: The global incidence of hand trauma has only modestly decreased since 1990. In 2017, t

Anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2018

Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results demonstrate widespread moderate improvements in overall anemia prevalence but identify only three LMICs with a high probability of achieving the WHO GNT by 2030 at a national scale, and no LMIC is expected to achieve the target in all their subnational administrative units. Our maps show where large within-country disparities occur, as well as areas likely to fall short of the WHO GNT, offering precision public health tools so that adequate resource allocation and subsequent interventions can be targeted to the most vulnerable populations.Peer reviewe
