Virtual photon fragmentation functions
We introduce operator definitions for virtual photon fragmentation functions,
which are needed for reliable calculations of Drell-Yan transverse momentum
() distributions when is much larger than the invariant mass . We
derive the evolution equations for these fragmentation functions. We calculate
the leading order evolution kernels for partons to fragment into a unpolarized
as well as a polarized virtual photon. We find that fragmentation functions to
a longitudinally polarized virtual photon are most important at small , and
the fragmentation functions to a transversely polarized virtual photon dominate
the large region. We discuss the implications of this finding to the
J/ mesons' polarization at large transverse momentum.Comment: Latex, 19 pages including 6 figures. An error in the first version

QCD Factorized Drell-Yan Cross Section at Large Transverse Momentum
We derive a new factorization formula in perturbative quantum chromodynamics
for the Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair cross section as a function of the
transverse momentum of the pair. When is much larger than the
pair's invariant mass , this factorization formula systematically resums the
logarithmic contributions of the type to all
orders in the strong coupling . When , our formula yields
the same Drell-Yan cross section as conventional fixed order QCD perturbation
theory. We show that resummation is important when the collision energy
is large enough and , and we argue that perturbative
expansions are more stable and reliable in terms of the modified factorization

Perturbative and nonperturbative contributions to the strange quark asymmetry in the nucleon
There are two mechanisms for the generation of an asymmetry between the
strange and anti-strange quark distributions in the nucleon: nonperturbative
contributions originating from nucleons fluctuating into virtual baryon-meson
pairs such as and , and perturbative contributions
arising from gluons splitting into strange and anti-strange quark pairs. While
the nonperturbative contributions are dominant in the large- region, the
perturbative contributions are more significant in the small- region. We
calculate this asymmetry taking into account both nonperturbative and
perturbative contributions, thus giving a more accurate evaluation of this
asymmetry over the whole domain of . We find that the perturbative
contributions are generally a few times larger in magnitude than the
nonperturbative contributions, which suggests that the best region to detect
this asymmetry experimentally is in the region . We find that
the asymmetry may have more than one node, which is an effect that should be
taken into account, e.g. for parameterizations of the strange and anti-strange

Parton model versus color dipole formulation of the Drell-Yan process
In the kinematical region where the center of mass energy is much larger than
all other scales, the Drell-Yan process can be formulated in the target rest
frame in terms of the same color dipole cross section as low Bjorken-x deep
inelastic scattering. Since the mechanisms for heavy dilepton production appear
very different in the dipole approach and in the conventional parton model, one
may wonder whether these two formulations really represent the same physics. We
perform a comparison of numerical calculations in the color dipole approach
with calculations in the next-to-leading order parton model. For proton-proton
scattering, the results are very similar at low x_2 from fixed target to RHIC
energies, confirming the close connection between these two very different
approaches. We also compare the transverse momentum distributions of Drell-Yan
dileptons predicted in both formulations. The range of applicability of the
dipole formulation and the impact of future Drell-Yan data from RHIC for
determining the color dipole cross section are discussed. A detailed derivation
of the dipole formulation of the Drell-Yan process is also included.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
J/psi suppression in heavy ion collisions by quark momentum diffusion
The momentum diffusion effect of the quark pair due to the multiple
scattering in a nuclear medium is studied to explain the observed J/psi yields
in SPS experiments. The resulting suppression is found to be insufficient to
reproduce the J/psi yield in Pb-Pb collisions at SPS energy.Comment: 2 pages (1 figure
Broken-Symmetry States in Quantum Hall Superlattices
We argue that broken-symmetry states with either spatially diagonal or
spatially off-diagonal order are likely in the quantum Hall regime, for clean
multiple quantum well (MQW) systems with small layer separations. We find that
for MQW systems, unlike bilayers, charge order tends to be favored over
spontaneous interlayer coherence. We estimate the size of the interlayer
tunneling amplitude needed to stabilize superlattice Bloch minibands by
comparing the variational energies of interlayer-coherent superlattice miniband
states with those of states with charge order and states with no broken
symmetries. We predict that when coherent miniband ground states are stable,
strong interlayer electronic correlations will strongly enhance the
growth-direction tunneling conductance and promote the possibility of Bloch

Differential Cross Section for Higgs Boson Production Including All-Orders Soft Gluon Resummation
The transverse momentum distribution is computed for inclusive Higgs
boson production at the energy of the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We focus on
the dominant gluon-gluon subprocess in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and
incorporate contributions from the quark-gluon and quark-antiquark channels.
Using an impact-parameter -space formalism, we include all-orders
resummation of large logarithms associated with emission of soft gluons. Our
resummed results merge smoothly at large with the fixed-order
expectations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as they should, with no
need for a matching procedure. They show a high degree of stability with
respect to variation of parameters associated with the non-perturbative input
at low . We provide distributions for Higgs boson masses
from to 200 GeV. The average transverse momentum at zero rapidity
grows approximately linearly with mass of the Higgs boson over the range ~GeV. We provide analogous results
for boson production, for which we compute GeV. The
harder transverse momentum distribution for the Higgs boson arises because
there is more soft gluon radiation in Higgs boson production than in

Partial Wave Analysis of
BES data on are presented. The
contribution peaks strongly near threshold. It is fitted with a
broad resonance with mass MeV, width MeV. A broad resonance peaking at 2020 MeV is also required
with width MeV. There is further evidence for a component
peaking at 2.55 GeV. The non- contribution is close to phase

Measurements of J/psi Decays into 2(pi+pi-)eta and 3(pi+pi-)eta
Based on a sample of 5.8X 10^7 J/psi events taken with the BESII detector,
the branching fractions of J/psi--> 2(pi+pi-)eta and J/psi-->3(pi+pi-)eta are
measured for the first time to be (2.26+-0.08+-0.27)X10^{-3} and
(7.24+-0.96+-1.11)X10^{-4}, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
BESII Detector Simulation
A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector
simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization
procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described.
Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally
