    Matching functions for heavy particles

    Get PDF
We introduce matching functions as a means of summing heavy-quark logarithms to any order. Our analysis is based on Witten's approach, where heavy quarks are decoupled one at a time in a mass-independent renormalization scheme. The outcome is a generalization of the matching conditions of Bernreuther and Wetzel: we show how to derive closed formulas for summed logarithms to any order, and present explicit expressions for leading order and next-to-leading order contributions. The decoupling of heavy quarks in theories lacking asymptotic freedom is also considered.Comment: Revised version to be published in Physical Review D; added section with application to decoupling of heavy particles in non-asymptotically free theorie

Anodes for electrochemical manganese dioxide deposition were coated by vacuum plasma sputtering using elemental powder mixtures of titanium-manganese and titanium-molybdenum, agglomerized TiMn powder and mechanically alloyed TiMn, TiMo or TiPd powder. In the optimized mechanical alloying process 0.5-2.0 wt % stearic acid is used as a process control agent. Phase structure, phase homogeneity and corrosion resistance of the coating were studied together with the electrochemical properties of the coated anodes. Excellent layers of high corrosion resistance were obtained from mechanically alloyed powders. For anode covering the application of mixed or mechanically alloyed TiMn powder is proposed. The investigations on electron beam welding of the aluminium alloys 6005A, 7020, 5083 and AlLi 2091 proved, that these alloys show different types of welding defects. Nevertheless, using suitable welding conditions welds of good properties can be obtained. A further improvement can be achieved by applying filler wire. In comparison to conventionally welded joints tensile strength of weldments produced by electron beam are significantly higher. Furthermore, examinations in order to determine the elongation behaviour were carried out by using special tensile tests as well as scanning electron microscopy. These tests proved the ductile behaviour of the seams. For industrial applications it must be pointed out that in comparison to conventional welding techniques distinctly higher processing speeds can be achieved by electron beam welding. It was the aim of the project to investigate the suitability of certain hard and wear resistant coatings for the lubricant free use. The work focussed on different concepts e.g. self lubricating coatings, coatings sealed with lubricants or composite coatings out of low friction matrix reenforced by wear resistant particles. In a first step these concepts were valued by laboratory test. Furthermore, the best ones got into field tests. Cermets and ceramic coatings exhibited a very good behaviour concerning the testing conditions. The objective of the present study is to determine the strength and fracture performance of high-temperature brazed joints under static and dynamic loads at ambient temperature. As a result of the investigations presented, it can be established that the L-Ni5 filler metal furnishes better results with respect to structure, (static and dynamic) strength and reproducibility. Under tensile load, wider spreads and greatly reduced elongation values cannot be avoided. The fatigue strength of such brazed joints reaches approximately 85% of that of the base metal, thus reaching a relatively high level.
