    Spectroscopic signatures of a bandwidth-controlled Mott transition at the surface of 1T-TaSe2_2

    High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data show that a metal-insulator Mott transition occurs at the surface of the quasi-two dimensional compound TaSe2_2. The transition is driven by the narrowing of the Ta 5d5d band induced by a temperature-dependent modulation of the atomic positions. A dynamical mean-field theory calculation of the spectral function of the half-filled Hubbard model captures the main qualitative feature of the data, namely the rapid transfer of spectral weight from the observed quasiparticle peak at the Fermi surface to the Hubbard bands, as the correlation gap opens up.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; one modified figure, added referenc

    Progressor: Social navigation support through open social student modeling

    The increased volumes of online learning content have produced two problems: how to help students to find the most appropriate resources and how to engage them in using these resources. Personalized and social learning have been suggested as potential ways to address these problems. Our work presented in this paper combines the ideas of personalized and social learning in the context of educational hypermedia. We introduce Progressor, an innovative Web-based tool based on the concepts of social navigation and open student modeling that helps students to find the most relevant resources in a large collection of parameterized self-assessment questions on Java programming. We have evaluated Progressor in a semester-long classroom study, the results of which are presented in this paper. The study confirmed the impact of personalized social navigation support provided by the system in the target context. The interface encouraged students to explore more topics attempting more questions and achieving higher success rates in answering them. A deeper analysis of the social navigation support mechanism revealed that the top students successfully led the way to discovering most relevant resources by creating clear pathways for weaker students. © 2013 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

    QuizMap: Open social student modeling and adaptive navigation support with TreeMaps

    In this paper, we present a novel approach to integrate social adaptive navigation support for self-assessment questions with an open student model using QuizMap, a TreeMap-based interface. By exposing student model in contrast to student peers and the whole class, QuizMap attempts to provide social guidance and increase student performance. The paper explains the nature of the QuizMap approach and its implementation in the context of self-assessment questions for Java programming. It also presents the design of a semester-long classroom study that we ran to evaluate QuizMap and reports the evaluation results. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

    Magnetic field independence of the spin gap in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}

    We report, for magnetic fields of 0, 8.8, and 14.8 Tesla, measurements of the temperature dependent ^{63}Cu NMR spin lattice relaxation rate for near optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, near and above T_c. In sharp contrast with previous work we find no magnetic field dependence. We discuss experimental issues arising in measurements of this required precision, and implications of the experiment regarding issues including the spin or pseudo gap.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, as accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Evidence for Static Magnetism in the Vortex Cores of Ortho-II YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.50_{6.50}

    Evidence for static alternating magnetic fields in the vortex cores of underdoped YBa2_2Cu3_3O6+x_{6+x} is reported. Muon spin rotation measurements of the internal magnetic field distribution of the vortex state of YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.50_{6.50} in applied fields of H=1H = 1 T and H=4H = 4 T reveal a feature in the high-field tail of the field distribution which is not present in optimally doped YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.95_{6.95} and which fits well to a model with static magnetic fields in the vortex cores. The magnitude of the fields is estimated to be 18(2) G and decreases above T=10T = 10 K. We discuss possible origins of the additional vortex core magnetism within the context of existing theories.Comment: Submitted to PRL; corresponding author: [email protected]

    Motivational Social Visualizations for Personalized E-Learning

    A large number of educational resources is now available on the Web to support both regular classroom learning and online learning. However, the abundance of available content produces at least two problems: how to help students find the most appropriate resources, and how to engage them into using these resources and benefiting from them. Personalized and social learning have been suggested as potential methods for addressing these problems. Our work presented in this paper attempts to combine the ideas of personalized and social learning. We introduce Progressor + , an innovative Web-based interface that helps students find the most relevant resources in a large collection of self-assessment questions and programming examples. We also present the results of a classroom study of the Progressor +  in an undergraduate class. The data revealed the motivational impact of the personalized social guidance provided by the system in the target context. The interface encouraged students to explore more educational resources and motivated them to do some work ahead of the course schedule. The increase in diversity of explored content resulted in improving students’ problem solving success. A deeper analysis of the social guidance mechanism revealed that it is based on the leading behavior of the strong students, who discovered the most relevant resources and created trails for weaker students to follow. The study results also demonstrate that students were more engaged with the system: they spent more time in working with self-assessment questions and annotated examples, attempted more questions, and achieved higher success rates in answering them

    Discrimination between the superconducting gap and the pseudo-gap in Bi2212 from intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy in magnetic field

    Intrinsic tunneling spectroscopy in high magnetic field (HH) is used for a direct test of superconducting features in a quasiparticle density of states of high-TcT_c superconductors. We were able to distinguish with a great clarity two co-existing gaps: (i) the superconducting gap, which closes as HHc2(T)H \to H_{c2}(T) and TTc(H)T\to T_c(H), and (ii) the cc-axis pseudo-gap, which does not change neither with HH, nor TT. Strikingly different magnetic field dependencies, together with previously observed different temperature dependencies of the two gaps ~\cite{Krasnov}, speak against the superconducting origin of the pseudo-gap.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figure

    O adsorption and incipient oxidation of the Mg(0001) surface

    First principles density functional calculations are used to study the early oxidation stages of the Mg(0001) surface for oxygen coverages 1/16 <= Theta <= 3 monolayers. It is found that at very low coverages O is incorporated below the topmost Mg layer in tetrahedral sites. At higher oxygen-load the binding in on-surface sites is increased but at one monolayer coverage the on-surface binding is still about 60 meV weaker than for subsurface sites. The subsurface octahedral sites are found to be unfavorable compared to subsurface tetrahedral sites and to on-surface sites. At higher coverages oxygen adsorbs both under the surface and up. Our calculations predict island formation and clustering of incorporated and adsorbed oxygen in agreement with previous calculations. The calculated configurations are compared with the angle-scanned x-ray photoelectron diffraction experiment to determine the geometrical structure of the oxidized Mg(0001) surface.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Effect of a magnetic field on the long-range magnetic order in insulating Nd2CuO4, nonsuperconducting and superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4

    We have measured the effect of a c-axis aligned magnetic field on the long-range magnetic order of insulating Nd2CuO4, as-grown nonsuperconducting and superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. On cooling from room temperature, Nd2CuO4 goes through a series of antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions with different noncollinear spin structures. In all phases of Nd2CuO4, we find that the applied c-axis field induces a canting of the AF order but does not alter the basic zero-field noncollinear spin structures. Similar behavior is also found in as-grown nonsuperconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. These results contrast dramatically with those of superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4, where a c-axis aligned magnetic field induces a static, anomalously conducting, long-range ordered AF state. We confirm that the annealing process necessary to make superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 also induces epitaxial, three-dimensional long-range ordered cubic (Nd,Ce)2O3 as an impurity phase. In addition, the annealing process makes a series of quasi two-dimensional superlattice reflections associated with lattice distortions of Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 in the CuO2 plane. While the application of a magnetic field will induce a net moment in the impurity phase, we determine its magnitude and eliminate this as a possibility for the observed magnetic field-induced effect in superconducting Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, to be published in Phys.     Impurity-induced in-gap state and Tc in sign-reversing s-wave superconductors: analysis of iron oxypnictide superconductors

    The sign-reversing fully gapped superconducting state, which is expected to be realized in oxypnictide superconductors, can be prominently affected by nonmagnetic impurities due to the interband scattering of Cooper pairs. We study this problem based on the isotropic two-band BCS model: In oxypnictide superconductors, the interband impurity scattering II' is not equal to the intraband one II. In the Born scattering regime, the reduction in Tc is sizable and the impurity-induced density of states (DOS) is prominent if III\sim I', due to the interband scattering. Although impurity-induced DOS can yield a power-law temperature dependence in 1/T11/T_1, a sizable suppression in Tc is inevitably accompanied. In the unitary scattering regime, in contrast, impurity effect is very small for both Tc and DOS except at I=II=I'. By comparing theory and experiments, we expect that the degree of anisotropy in the s±s_\pm-wave gap function strongly depends on compounds.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to be published in New. J.
