Dynamical properties of dipolar Fermi gases
We investigate dynamical properties of a one-component Fermi gas with
dipole-dipole interaction between particles. Using a variational function based
on the Thomas-Fermi density distribution in phase space representation, the
total energy is described by a function of deformation parameters in both real
and momentum space. Various thermodynamic quantities of a uniform dipolar Fermi
gas are derived, and then instability of this system is discussed. For a
trapped dipolar Fermi gas, the collective oscillation frequencies are derived
with the energy-weighted sum rule method. The frequencies for the monopole and
quadrupole modes are calculated, and softening against collapse is shown as the
dipolar strength approaches the critical value. Finally, we investigate the
effects of the dipolar interaction on the expansion dynamics of the Fermi gas
and show how the dipolar effects manifest in an expanded cloud.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to New J. Phy
Characterisation of real GPRS traffic with analytical tools
With GPRS and UMTS networks lunched, wireless multimedia services are commercially becoming the most attractive applications next to voice. Because of the nature of bursty, packet-switched schemes and multiple data rates, the traditional Erlang approach and Poisson models for characterising voice-centric services traffic are not suitable for studying wireless multimedia services traffic. Therefore, research on the characterisation of wireless multimedia services traffic is very challenging. The typical reference for the study of wireless multimedia services traffic is wired Internet services traffic. However, because of the differences in network protocol, bandwidth, and QoS requirements between wired and wireless services, their traffic characterisations may not be similar. Wired network Internet traffic shows self-similarity, long-range dependence and its file sizes exhibit heavy-tailedness. This paper reports the use of existing tools to analyse real GPRS traffic data to establish whether wireless multimedia services traffic have similar properties as wired Internet services traffic
Closed-form Absorption Probability of Certain D=5 and D=4 Black Holes and Leading-Order Cross-Section of Generic Extremal p-branes
We obtain the closed-form absorption probabilities for minimally-coupled
massless scalars propagating in the background of D=5 single-charge and D=4
two-charge black holes. These are the only two examples of extremal black holes
with non-vanishing absorption probabilities that can be solved in closed form
for arbitrary incident frequencies. In both cases, the absorption probability
vanishes when the frequency is below a certain threshold, and we discuss the
connection between this phenomenon and the behaviour of geodesics in these
black hole backgrounds. We also obtain leading-order absorption cross-sections
for generic extremal p-branes, and show that the expression for the
cross-section as a function of frequency coincides with the leading-order
dependence of the entropy on the temperature in the corresponding near-extremal
p-branes.Comment: Latex (3 times), 20 page
Thermodynamic properties of tetrameric bond-alternating spin chains
Thermodynamic properties of a tetrameric bond-alternating Heisenberg spin
chain with ferromagnetic-ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic
exchange interactions are studied using the transfer-matrix renormalization
group and compared to experimental measurements. The temperature dependence of
the uniform susceptibility exhibits typical ferrimagnetic features. Both the
uniform and staggered magnetic susceptibilities diverge in the limit ,
indicating that the ground state has both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic
long-range orders. A double-peak structure appears in the temperature
dependence of the specific heat. Our numerical calculation gives a good account
for the temperature and field dependence of the susceptibility, the
magnetization, and the specific heat for Cu(3-Clpy)(N)
(3-Clpy=3-Chloroyridine).Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures; Replaced with final version accepted in Phys.

Transfer-matrix renormalization group study of the spin ladders with cyclic four-spin interactions
The temperature dependence of the specific heat and spin susceptibility of
the spin ladders with cyclic four-spin interactions in the rung-singlet phase
is explored by making use of the transfer-matrix renormalization group method.
The values of spin gap are extracted from the specific heat and susceptibility,
respectively. It is found that for different relative strength between
interchain and intrachain interactions, the spin gap is approximately linear
with the cyclic four-spin interaction in the region far away from the critical
point. Furthermore, we show that the dispersion for the one-triplet magnon
branch can be obtained by numerically fitting on the partition function.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
Bulk Rotational Symmetry Breaking in Kondo Insulator SmB6
Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has been intensely studied in
recent years as a potential candidate of a strongly correlated topological
insulator. One of the most exciting phenomena observed in SmB6 is the clear
quantum oscillations appearing in magnetic torque at a low temperature despite
the insulating behavior in resistance. These quantum oscillations show multiple
frequencies and varied effective masses. The origin of quantum oscillation is,
however, still under debate with evidence of both two-dimensional Fermi
surfaces and three-dimensional Fermi surfaces. Here, we carry out
angle-resolved torque magnetometry measurements in a magnetic field up to 45 T
and a temperature range down to 40 mK. With the magnetic field rotated in the
(010) plane, the quantum oscillation frequency of the strongest oscillation
branch shows a four-fold rotational symmetry. However, in the angular
dependence of the amplitude of the same branch, this four-fold symmetry is
broken and, instead, a twofold symmetry shows up, which is consistent with the
prediction of a two-dimensional Lifshitz-Kosevich model. No deviation of
Lifshitz-Kosevich behavior is observed down to 40 mK. Our results suggest the
existence of multiple light-mass surface states in SmB6, with their mobility
significantly depending on the surface disorder level.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
