Mites are one of the largest and most diverse subclasses of Arachnida with a worldwide distribution. The order includes 456 families and more than 56,000 species. In this study, mesostigmatic soil mite fauna was studied as indicators of biodiversity in the 52-hectare Police park of the city of Tehran, Iran. The area of the park was divided into 7 sections in terms of their vegetational and geographical properties. Soil samplings were conducted through theyear and a total of 6167 mite specimens of 80 species were collected. Species diversity was calculated using Simpsons index of diversity and Shannon-Wiener index. Species richness was estimated using Menhinicks index and Margalefs diversity index and species evenness calculation was based on Peet and Hill.  Cheiroseius sp., Halolaelaps sp., Oplitis sp.,  Asca sp., Androlaelaps aegypticus,  Pergamasus falculiger, Gamasiphis pulchellus, Cosmolaelaps lutegiensis, Macrocheles insignitus, Euandrolaelaps karawaiewi, Lasioseius youcefi,  Proctolaelaps pygmaeus,  Macrocheles peniculatus, Iphidozercon gibbus, Antennoseius masoviae, Pergamasus crassipes and Neogamasus cervicornis are reported here from Tehran for the first time. Uroseius (Apinoseius) sp. is new to Iran

Ethics and accuracy in scientific researches with emphasize on taxonomic works

    Get PDF
Research is one of those highly complex and subtle activities that usually remain quite unformulated in the minds of those who practise them. This is probably why most scientists think that it is not possible to give nay formal instruction in how to do research. Additionally, training in research must be largely self-training,preferably with the guidance of an experienced scientist in the handling of the actual investigation. Scientific research, which is simply the search for new knowledge, appeals especially to people who are individualists and their method vary from one person to another. A policy followed by one scientist may not be suitable for another, and different methods are required in different branches of science. However, there are some basic principles and mental techniques that are commonly used in most types of investigation, at least in the biological sphere. Honesty and morals are the first step in all scientific researches and a researcher must consider it in all stages of a scientific work. The role and importance of accuracy and honesty in taxonomy and systematic is more than other biological sciences. For having the honesty in scientific researches, learning the principals of ethics is needed for all the researchers and students. Therefore, this paper deals with the ethics in science and technology and also important comments on taxonomy.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

During 2005-2006, a faunistic study was carried out to identify predatory mites associated with citrus trees in the western part of Mazandaran, Iran. Five species, viz. Amblyseius herbicolus Chant, Typhlodromips caspiansis Denmark & Daneshvar, Neoseiulus barkeri (Hughes), Paraseiulus triporus (Chant & Yoshida-Shaul) and Euseius amissibilis Meshkov*, belonging to the family Phytoseiidae were collected, of which the latter species marked with an asterisk is newly recorded from Iran

The first report of Pseudotorymus stachidis (Hym.: Torymidae) from Iran

Larvae of Dicrodiplosis manihoti Harris (Dip., Cecidomyiidae) are the predator of mealybug ovisacs (Hem.: Pseudococcidae) in Fars province, Iran. Parasitized larvae of this predator were collected from Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead) on Citrus sinensis (L.) and reared in the laboratory. Parasitoid wasps belonging to the family Torymidae were consequently collected, and identified as Pseudotorymus stachidis (Mayr) by T. C. Narendran, India. This species is a new record for Iran. The host-parasitoid relationship is also newly recorded

Biology and demography of Ommatissus lybicus de Bergevin was studied under controlled conditions at 25 ± 1, 30 ± 1 and 35 ± 1ËC and 60 ± 5% RH and 16: 8 L: D. Forty eggs of the pest (0-24 h old) were used in each temperature treatment. Developmental time was obtained 82.48 ± 0.72, 75.79 ± 0.55 and 89.85 ± 0.71 days at 25, 30 and 35ËC, respectively. Moreover, at 35ËC, most of the biological activities of the dubas bug were disrupted and individuals, especially females, incurred relatively high mortalities. Female life span was significantly higher at 25ËC (108.21 ± 1.33 days) comparing to that of the other temperatures. The net reproductive rate (R0) was 45.93 and 52.31 at 25 and 30ËC; however, it extremely decreased at 35ËC (5.82). The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.054, 0.062 and 0.029 at 25, 30 and 35ËC, respectively. Similarly, doubling time (DT) was also close at 25 and 30ËC (14.2 vs 12.3 days) but it increased dramatically at 35ËC (29.27 days). Based on life table parameters observed, it was concluded that 30ËC could be an optimum temperature for the biological activities of O. lybicus

In the study of natural enemies of mealybugs (Hem.: Pseudococcidae) in Fars province, Iran, a large number of parasitized mealybugs were collected, and the emerged encyrtid species identified as Leptomastidea alleni Noyes & Hayat, 1994. The identification was confirmed by Zhihong Xu, Institute of Applied Entomology, Zhejiang University of China. The genus and species is a new record for Iran. This is also the first report of L. alleni from Palearctic region. This species was collected from Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead) on Citrus sinensis (L.), C. aurantium (L.) and Althaea sp., and from Planococcus vovae (Nasonov) on Cupressus sp
