    Ground Measurements of the Shock-Wave Noise from Airplanes in Level Flight at Mach Numbers to 1.4 and at Altitudes to 45000 Feet

    Time histories of noise pressures near ground level were measured during flight tests of fighter-type airplanes over fairly flat, partly wooded terrain in the e Mach number range between 1.13 and 1.4 and at altitudes from 25,000 to 45,000 feet. Atmospheric soundings and radar tracking studies were made for correlation with the measured noise data. The measured and calculated values of the pressure rise across the shock wave were generally in good agreement. There is a tendency for the theory to overestimate the pressure at locations remote from the track and to underestimate the pressures for conditions of high tailwind at altitude. The measured values of ground-reflection factor averaged about 1.8 f or the surface tested as compared to a theoretical value of 2.0. P o booms were measured in all cases. The observers also generally reported two booms; although, in some cases, only one boom was reported. The shock-wave noise associated with some of the flight tests was judged to be objectionable by ground observers, and in one case the cracking of a plate-glass store window was correlated in time with the passage of the airplane at an altitude of 25,000 feet

    We report various many-body theoretical approaches to the nonlinear decay rate and energy loss of charged particles moving in an interacting free electron gas. These include perturbative formulations of the scattering matrix, the self-energy, and the induced electron density.     We study the effects of correlations on a one dimensional ring threaded by a uniform magnetic flux. In order to describe the interaction between particles, we work in the framework of the U ∞\infty Hubbard and tt-JJ models. We focus on the dilute limit. Our results suggest the posibility that the persistent current has an anomalous periodicity Ï•0/p\phi_{0}/p, where pp is an integer in the range 2≤p≤Ne2\leq p\leq N_{e} (NeN_{e} is the number of particles in the ring and Ï•0\phi_{0} is the flux quantum). We found that this result depends neither on disorder nor on the detailed form of the interaction, while remains the on site infinite repulsion.Comment: 14 pages (Revtex), 5 postscript figures.     Commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the two-dimensional repulsive t-t'-Hubbard model are investigated using functional renormalization group equations. For a sufficient deviation from half filling we establish the existence of local incommensurate order below a pseudocritical temperature T_{pc}.     Viking on Mars: The carbon assimilation experiments

    A fixation of atmospheric carbon, presumably into organic form, occurs in Martian surface material under conditions approximating the actual Martian ones. The reaction showed the following characteristics: The amount of carbon fixed is small by terrestrial standards; highest yields were observed in the light, but some dark activity was also detected; and heating the surface material to 90°C for nearly 2 hours had no effect on the reaction, but heating to 175°C for 3 hours reduced it by nearly 90%. New data from Mars do not support an earlier suggestion that the reaction is inhibited by traces of water. There is evidence of considerable heterogeneity among different samples, but different aliquots from the same sample are remarkably uniform in their carbon-fixing capacity. In view of its thermostability it is unlikely that the reaction is biological

    Cluster coherent potential approximation for electronic structure of disordered alloys

    We extend the single-site coherent potential approximation (CPA) to include the effects of non-local disorder correlations (alloy short-range order) on the electronic structure of random alloy systems. This is achieved by mapping the original Anderson disorder problem to that of a selfconsistently embedded cluster. This cluster problem is then solved using the equations of motion technique. The CPA is recovered for cluster size Nc=1N_{c}=1, and the disorder averaged density-of-states (DOS) is always positive definite. Various new features, compared to those observed in CPA, and related to repeated scattering on pairs of sites, reflecting the effect of SRO are clearly visible in the DOS. It is explicitly shown that the cluster-CPA method always yields positive-definite DOS. Anderson localization effects have been investigated within this approach. In general, we find that Anderson localization sets in before band splitting occurs, and that increasing partial order drives a continuous transition from an Anderson insulator to an incoherent metal.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. submitted to PR

    Zero Field precession and hysteretic threshold currents in spin torque oscillators with tilted polarizer

    Using non-linear system theory and numerical simulations we map out the static and dynamic phase diagram in zero applied field of a spin torque oscillator with a tilted polarizer (TP-STO).We find that for sufficiently large currents, even very small tilt angles (beta>1 degree) will lead to steady free layer precession in zero field. Within a rather large range of tilt angles, 1 degree< beta <19 degree, we find coexisting static states and hysteretic switching between these using only current. In a more narrow window (1 degree<beta<5 degree) one of the static states turns into a limit cycle (precession). The coexistence of static and dynamic states in zero magnetic field is unique to the tilted polarizer and leads to large hysteresis in the upper and lower threshold currents for TP-STO operation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
