Pure dephasing in flux qubits due to flux noise with spectral density scaling as
For many types of superconducting qubits, magnetic flux noise is a source of
pure dephasing. Measurements on a representative dc superconducting quantum
interference device (SQUID) over a range of temperatures show that , where is the flux noise spectral density,
is of the order of 1 and ; is the flux quantum. For a qubit with an energy level
splitting linearly coupled to the applied flux, calculations of the dependence
of the pure dephasing time of Ramsey and echo pulse sequences on
for fixed show that decreases rapidly as is
reduced. We find that is relatively insensitive to the noise
bandwidth, , for all provided the ultraviolet
cutoff frequency . We calculate the ratio of the echo () and Ramsey () sequences, and the dependence
of the decay function on and . We investigate the case in which
is fixed at the "pivot frequency" Hz while
is varied, and find that the choice of can greatly influence the
sensitivity of and to the value of .
Finally, we present calculated values of in a qubit corresponding

Nucleon Polarizabilities from Deuteron Compton Scattering within a Green's-Function Hybrid Approach
We examine elastic Compton scattering from the deuteron for photon energies
ranging from zero to 100 MeV, using state-of-the-art deuteron wave functions
and NN-potentials. Nucleon-nucleon rescattering between emission and absorption
of the two photons is treated by Green's functions in order to ensure gauge
invariance and the correct Thomson limit. With this Green's-function hybrid
approach, we fulfill the low-energy theorem of deuteron Compton scattering and
there is no significant dependence on the deuteron wave function used.
Concerning the nucleon structure, we use Chiral Effective Field Theory with
explicit \Delta(1232) degrees of freedom within the Small Scale Expansion up to
leading-one-loop order. Agreement with available data is good at all energies.
Our 2-parameter fit to all elastic data leads to values for the
static isoscalar dipole polarizabilities which are in excellent agreement with
the isoscalar Baldin sum rule. Taking this value as additional input, we find
\alpha_E^s= (11.3+-0.7(stat)+-0.6(Baldin)) x 10^{-4} fm^3 and \beta_M^s =
(3.2-+0.7(stat)+-0.6(Baldin)) x 10^{-4} fm^3 and conclude by comparison to the
proton numbers that neutron and proton polarizabilities are essentially the

Students’ assessment preferences, perceptions of assessment and their relationships to study results
A versatile synthesis method of dendrites-free segmented nanowires with a precise size control
We report an innovative strategy to obtain cylindrical nanowires combining well established and low-cost bottom-up methods such as template-assisted nanowires synthesis and electrodeposition process. This approach allows the growth of single-layer or multi-segmented nanowires with precise control over their length (from few nanometers to several micrometers). The employed techniques give rise to branched pores at the bottom of the templates and consequently dendrites at the end of the nanowires. With our method, these undesired features are easily removed from the nanowires by a selective chemical etching. This is crucial for magnetic characterizations where such non-homogeneous branches may introduce undesired features into the final magnetic response. The obtained structures show extremely narrow distributions in diameter and length, improved robustness and high-yield, making this versatile approach strongly compatible with large scale production at an industrial level. Finally, we show the possibility to tune accurately the size of the nanostructures and consequently provide an easy control over the magnetic properties of these nanostructures
Influence of Gamma-Ray Emission on the Isotopic Composition of Clouds in the Interstellar Medium
We investigate one mechanism of the change in the isotopic composition of
cosmologically distant clouds of interstellar gas whose matter was subjected
only slightly to star formation processes. According to the standard
cosmological model, the isotopic composition of the gas in such clouds was
formed at the epoch of Big Bang nucleosynthesis and is determined only by the
baryon density in the Universe. The dispersion in the available cloud
composition observations exceeds the errors of individual measurements. This
may indicate that there are mechanisms of the change in the composition of
matter in the Universe after the completion of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We
have calculated the destruction and production rates of light isotopes (D, 3He,
4He) under the influence of photonuclear reactions triggered by the gamma-ray
emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We investigate the destruction and
production of light elements depending on the spectral characteristics of the
gamma-ray emission. We show that in comparison with previous works, taking into
account the influence of spectral hardness on the photonuclear reaction rates
can increase the characteristic radii of influence of the gamma-ray emission
from AGNs by a factor of 2-8. The high gamma-ray luminosities of AGNs observed
in recent years increase the previous estimates of the characteristic radii by
two orders of magnitude. This may suggest that the influence of the emission
from AGNs on the change in the composition of the medium in the immediate
neighborhood (the host galaxy) has been underestimated.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 3 table
Online peer assessment in higher education: a systematic review of literature in educational practices
Neste artigo procedemos a uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre Online Peer Assessment (OPA) no Ensino Superior, mediadas por Tecnologias Digitais de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). Identificamos suas características, centrais e opcionais e mapeamos exemplos práticos (procedimentos e TIC) de OPA que poderão ser transversais, adaptáveis e aplicáveis em diversas unidades curriculares e regimes educacionais. Os resultados apontam para a utilização da OPA como uma estratégia que potencia a “avaliação para a aprendizagem”. Os referenciais teóricos subjacentes, os métodos de avaliação e os tipos de TIC utilizadas indicam seu direcionamento para um maior envolvimento e responsabilidade do aluno na sua aprendizagem. Evidenciamos na literatura que se busca desenvolver essas competências, dando ao aluno oportunidades com alguma regularidade para autoavaliar-se e avaliar seus pares por meio de feedback construtivo. Há também evidências de que dar ou produzir feedback é mais benéfico para a aprendizagem do que apenas recebê-lo, como também é cognitivamente mais exigente e envolve os alunos de forma mais ativa e os direciona ao pensamento crítico e a processos metacognitivos. A partir dos resultados alcançados, consideramos que a OPA, enquanto ferramenta cognitiva, contribui para a construção do conhecimento e para a reflexão sobre a aprendizagem. Um desafio que se coloca diz respeito ao desenvolvimento criativo com foco na diversificação e na inovação das práticas de avaliação no sentido de potenciar aprendizagens e resultados acadêmicos, em atenção às necessidades de aprendizagem que se manifestam frente às expectativas da educação atual e futura e às exigências da sociedade.In this research a systematic review of literature about Online Peer Assessment (OPA) in higher
education, mediated by Information and Communication Technology (ICT), was carried out.
Optional and central characteristics and its practices (procedures and ICT) were identified and
mapping. These procedures and practices may be transversal, adaptable and applied in several
curriculum units and educational regimes. The results point to the use of OPA as a strategy that
enhances “assessment for learning”. The theoretical framework, the methods of assessment and
the kinds of ICT used indicate directions for greater involvement and responsibility from the part
of the student in his/her learning. Theoretical framework identifies the need to develop students’
skills, providing them with opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment on a regular
basis through constructive feedback. There is also evidence that to give or receive feedback is more
beneficial for learning than just receiving it. It is also cognitively more demanding and directs the
students to critical thinking and metacognitive processes. From the results obtained, OPA is seen as
a cognitive tool, contributing to the building of knowledge and to reflection about learning. Issues
for further reflection are also identified such as the creative development of assessment methods
with a focus on diversity and innovation in order to enhance students’ learning and academic
results, taking into account their learning needs in face of the expectations of current and future

Towards a resolution of some outstanding issues in transitive research: an empirical test on middle childhood
Transitive Inference (deduce B > D from B > C and C > D) can help us to understand other areas of sociocognitive development. Across three experiments, learning, memory, and the validity of two transitive paradigms were investigated. In Experiment 1 (N = 121), 7-year-olds completed a three-term nontraining task or a five-term task requiring extensive-training. Performance was superior on the three-term task. Experiment 2 presented 5–10-year-olds with a new five-term task, increasing learning opportunities without lengthening training (N = 71). Inferences improved, suggesting children can learn five-term series rapidly. Regarding memory, the minor (CD) premise was the best predictor of BD-inferential performance in both task-types. However, tasks exhibited different profiles according to associations between the major (BC) premise and BD inference, correlations between the premises, and the role of age. Experiment 3 (N = 227) helped rule out the possible objection that the above findings simply stemmed from three-term tasks with real objects being easier to solve than computer-tasks. It also confirmed that, unlike for five-term task (Experiments 1 & 2), inferences on three-term tasks improve with age, whether the age range is wide (Experiment 3) or narrow (Experiment 2). I conclude that the tasks indexed different routes within a dual-process conception of transitive reasoning: The five-term tasks indexes Type 1 (associative) processing, and the three-term task indexes Type 2 (analytic) processing. As well as demonstrating that both tasks are perfectly valid, these findings open up opportunities to use transitive tasks for educability, to investigate the role of transitivity in other domains of reasoning, and potentially to benefit the lived experiences of persons with developmental issues

In March 2005, a group of experts from the European Society of Human Genetics and European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology met to discuss the interface between genetics and assisted reproductive technology (ART), and published an extended background paper, recommendations and two Editorials. Seven years later, in March 2012, a follow-up interdisciplinary workshop was held, involving representatives of both professional societies, including experts from the European Union Eurogentest2 Coordination Action Project. The main goal of this meeting was to discuss developments at the interface between clinical genetics and ARTs. As more genetic causes of reproductive failure are now recognised and an increasing number of patients undergo testing of their genome before conception, either in regular health care or in the context of direct-to-consumer testing, the need for genetic counselling and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) may increase. Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) thus far does not have evidence from randomised clinical trials to substantiate that the technique is both effective and efficient. Whole-genome sequencing may create greater challenges both in the technological and interpretational domains, and requires further reflection about the ethics of genetic testing in ART and PGD/PGS. Diagnostic laboratories should be reporting their results according to internationally accepted accreditation standards (International Standards Organisation - ISO 15189). Further studies are needed in order to address issues related to the impact of ART on epigenetic reprogramming of the early embryo. The legal landscape regarding assisted reproduction is evolving but still remains very heterogeneous and often contradictory. The lack of legal harmonisation and uneven access to infertility treatment and PGD/PGS fosters considerable cross-border reproductive care in Europe and beyond.
