School-based mental health promotion in children and adolescents with StresSOS using online or face-to-face interventions: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial within the ProHEAD Consortium
Abstract Background Schools are an ideal setting in which to promote health. However, empirical data on the effectiveness of school-based mental health promotion programs are rare, and research on universal Internet-based prevention in schools is almost non-existent. Following the life skills approach, stress management training is an important component of health promotion. Mental health literacy is also associated with mental health status, and it facilitates formal help-seeking by children and adolescents (C&A). The main objectives of this study are (1) the development and evaluation of an Internet-based version of a universal school-based health promotion program called StresSOS and (2) demonstrating non-inferiority of the online setting compared to the face-to-face setting. StresSOS aims to improve stress management and mental health literacy in C&A. Methods/design A school-based sample of 15,000 C&A (grades 6–13 and older than 12 years) will be recruited in five regions of Germany within the ProHEAD Consortium. Those with a screening result at baseline indicating no mental health problems will be invited to participate in a randomized controlled trial comparing StresSOS online to an active online control condition (Study A). In addition, 420 adolescents recruited as a separate school-based sample will participate in the StresSOS face-to-face intervention. Participants in both intervention groups (online or face-to-face) will receive the same eight treatment modules to allow for the comparison of both methods of delivery (Study B). The primary outcome is the number of C&A with symptoms of mental health problems at a 12 months follow-up. Secondary outcomes are related to stress/coping (i.e., knowledge, symptoms of stress, coping resources), mental health literacy (knowledge and attitudes toward mental disorders and help-seeking), program usage patterns, cost-effectiveness, and acceptability of the intervention. Discussion This study represents the first adequately powered non-inferiority trial in the area of school-based mental health promotion. If online StresSOS proves efficacious and non-inferior to face-to-face delivery, this offers great potential for health promotion in youths, both in and outside the school environment. Being Mum’s Confidant, a Boon or Bane? Examining Gender Differences in the Association of Maternal Disclosure with Adolescents’ Depressive Feelings
This article reports on a longitudinal study investigating gender differences in the association between maternal disclosure and adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Little research has examined the relationship of parental disclosure to adolescents’ depressive symptoms and research on sex differences is particularly lacking. In a sample of 428 families with a mean age of 13.36 (52% female) of the target adolescents, maternal and children’s disclosure and depressive symptoms were assessed twice with an interval of 4 years. Controlling for the quality of the parent–child relationship and levels of maternal depressive symptoms, the analyses revealed an interaction effect for child’s gender, moderating the effect of maternal disclosure on adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Higher levels of maternal disclosure were accompanied by lower levels of depressive symptoms in girls and higher levels of depressive symptoms in boys. Gender differences in socialization, communication, individuation and social networks might explain why daughters and sons are differently affected by maternal disclosure
Developmental differences in children’s interpersonal emotion regulation
Previous research on interpersonal emotion regulation (ER) in childhood has been rather unsystematic, focusing mainly on children’s prosocial behaviour, and has been conducted in the absence of an integrative emotion theoretical framework. The present research relied on the interpersonal affect classification proposed by Niven, Totterdell, and Holman (2009) to investigate children’s use of different interpersonal ER strategies. The study drew on two samples: 180 parents of children aged between 3 and 8 years reported about a situation where their child was able to change what another person was feeling in order to make them feel better. In addition, 126 children between 3- and 8-years old answered two questions about how they could improve others’ mood. Results from both samples showed age differences in children’s use of interpersonal ER strategies. As expected, ‘affective engagement’ (i.e., focusing on the person or the problem) and ‘cognitive engagement’ (i.e., appraising the situation from a different perspective) were mainly used by 7-8 years-old, whereas ‘attention’ (i.e., distracting and valuing) was most used by 3-4 and 5-6 years-old. ‘Humor’ (i.e., laughing with the target) remained stable across the different age groups. The present research provides more information about the developmental patterns for each specific interpersonal emotion regulation strategy
Reciprocal Prospective Relationships Between Loneliness and Weight Status in Late Childhood and Early Adolescence
Adolescents who do not conform to weight ideals are vulnerable to disapproval and victimization from peers in school. But, missing from the literature is a prospective examination of weight status and feelings of loneliness that might come from those experiences. Using data from the Québec Longitudinal Study of Child Development, we filled that gap by examining the prospective associations between loneliness and weight status when the sample was aged 10 to 13 years. At ages 10, 12, and 13 years, 1042 youth (572 females; 92% from French speaking homes) reported on their loneliness and were weighed and measured. Family income sufficiency was included in our analyses given its relationship with weight status, but also its possible link with loneliness during early adolescence. The findings showed that (1) weight status and loneliness were not associated concurrently; (2) weight status predicted increases in loneliness from ages 12 to 13 years; and (3) loneliness predicted increases in weight from ages 12 to 13 years among female adolescents, but weight loss among male adolescents. The fact that loneliness was involved in weight gain for females suggests that interventions focused on reducing loneliness and increasing connection with peers during early adolescence could help in reducing obesity

Visual extinction in relation to visuospatial neglect after right-hemispheric stroke: quantitative assessment and statistical lesion-symptom mapping
Visual neglect and extinction are two common neurological syndromes in patients with right-hemispheric brain damage. Whether and how these two syndromes are associated or share common neural substrates is still a matter of debate.To address these issues, the authors investigated 56 patients with right-hemispheric stroke with a novel diagnostic test to detect extinction and neglect. In this computerised task, subjects had to respond to target stimuli in uni- and bilateral stimulation conditions with detection probabilities being assessed. A cluster-analytical approach identified 18 patients with neglect and 13 patients with extinction. Statistical lesion-symptom mapping analyses with measures for extinction and neglect were performed.Extinction and neglect co-occurred in a subset of patients but were also observed independently from each other, thereby constituting a double dissociation. Lesions within the right inferior parietal cortex were significantly associated with the severity of visual extinction. Visuospatial neglect was related to damage of fronto-parietal brain regions, with parieto-occipital areas affecting line bisection and dorsal fronto-parietal areas affecting cancellation task performance, respectively.Quantifying lesion-induced symptoms with this novel paradigm shows that extinction and neglect are dissociable syndromes in patients with right-hemispheric stroke. Furthermore, extinction and neglect can be related to differential neural substrates, with extinction being related to focal brain damage within the right inferior parietal cortex
The neural basis of perceptual bias and response bias in the Landmark task
Spatial neglect as a multifaceted syndrome may consist of perceptual/attentional as well as motor/intentional components. The present study investigated the lesion anatomy underlying perceptual and response bias using a manual response Landmark task (Bisiach, Ricci, Lualdi, & Colombo, 1998) in 68 patients with right-hemispheric stroke. The two differential aspects of the neglect syndrome were assessed by measuring response tendencies resulting from underestimations of the length of left line segments and from hypometric movement execution towards contralesional space, respectively. Perceptual and response bias were orthogonal components of task performance in the Landmark task. Perceptual as well as response bias both explained variance in the performance of standard paper-and-pencil neglect tests. While lesions within middle frontal, inferior parietal and parieto-occipital brain regions were related to perceptual bias, subcortical lesions within the caudate were related to response bias in the Landmark task. Our data suggest that perceptual/attentional and motor/intentional aspects of neglect are independent components of the syndrome with differential neural underpinnings in fronto-parietal and subcortical brain regions.
